Activities at Balclutha Court Care Home
At Balclutha Court our resident’s happiness is extremely important to us. We all know that a large part of this is keeping active and continuing to enjoy your interests and hobbies. At Balclutha Court, we have regular activities including arts and crafts, music, entertainment, trips to local attractions such as canal trips, safari parks and many more. Our activities team are always busy organising events, entertainment and excursions with the broadest possible appeal and many of our residents see living at Balclutha Court as an opportunity to develop a new skill or interest. It is important to us that each individual who we support can get as much from these as possible, so we try our best to arrange activities that reflect their interests and capabilities as best as possible, and encourage them to participate in any way they can. We also encourage relatives to join with activities and events as often as they can.
Karen Dillon
Karen Dillon is our Head of Activities and has worked within the home since 2005, starting out as a Carer. Karen is very outgoing and full of fun. She has many hobbies, with arts & crafts being her favourite, and her passion for this can be seen in our life enrichment programme.
Karen is supported by Kay Millar and Anita Marsh, between them they ensure that residents are happy and have loads of fun.
They are very keen to involve the residents in the decision making within the home to enhance their experience. They take part in the residents' meetings, catering forums and assist the General Manager in interviewing new staff members.
Read our brochure 'Life-enriching activities' for more information about life in our care homes.

Awarding the Community Champion
Inverclyde is renowned for its close knit, community spirit and are fiercely proud of their area and what it stands for, and Balclutha Court was privileged to support the 2019 Greenock Community Champion Awards, which was held on Friday 17th May, where they presented the Senior Community Champion Award to Mrs Irene Pollard. The event celebrates the incredible groups and people within Inverclyde.
Baclutha Court's General Manager, Alison Dickson, presented the award to Mrs Pollard, as she was recognised as a community councillor and disabilities campaigner, spending the last 25 years fighting to improve services and support for people with learning disabilities alongside being a full-time carer for her daughter. Irene has been the driving force behind the establishment of the Fitzgerald Centre, the Inverclyde Carer’s Centre and Parklea Branching Out project. Irene has also served as chair of both the Inverclyde Care’s Council and Carer’s Centre. At the age of 85 she continues to work tirelessly on behalf of the disability.
Easter Crafts
Residents had lots of fun during our Easter arts & crafts session.
Mum in a Million
Nurse, Julie Wilson, has been nominated by her daughter for Greenock Telegraph's 'Mum in a Million' competition for supporting the residents of Balclutha Court by day and caring for her lifelong partner at home, who is awaiting his third kidney transplant.
Julie never puts herself first; she works a tough job and comes home to support Stephen who is living with kidney failure as a result of the genetic condition, polycystic kidney disease. He fell seriously ill 11 years ago and has had to undergo 2 kidney transplants so far.
We are very proud to have Julie on our team; she is a true asset to Balclutha Court.
Red Nose Day
We hosted a bake sale on Red Nose Day in an effort to raise money for Comic Relief.
