Reviews for Challoner House Care Home
What our families say on carehome.co.uk
"This very attractive care home is an absolute pleasure to visit. On arrival you're met by very happy and welcoming staff with refreshments available if required. The rooms - leisure, dining and bedrooms are all of a very high standard, and there's a full programme of entertainment and activities each week for the residents - plus sometimes the opportunity for a trip out. The gardens and grounds, kept immaculate, are an added bonus in the summer. My aunt is so happy there, and is always very complimentary about the food. So all in all an absolute gem - somewhere I'd have no hesitation to book for myself."

"My husband was admitted for the last week of his life for palliative and nursing care. He was treated with all possible care and attention and I felt confident leaving him in the care of the staff at Barchester Challoner House Care Home. I was made welcome by all and able to visit at any time. I would recommend Challoner House to anyone needing this level of nursing and care."

"Gardens are lovely, if it was the summer I would take cuttings from flowers but will be back. Think there could be a bit of updating in the home painting. The staff have made me feel very welcomed. The chef looked after me very well. Cleaners were very good and helpful. So, thank you all very much."

"We are very pleased with the care my mum gets at Barchester Challoner House Care Home. The staff are professional, kind and caring and they treated difficult situations with humour. They go over and above and do small things that make all the difference."

"My mum spent fourteen months at Barchester Challoner House Care Home between August 2023 and October 2024. Unfortunately, she was 90% paralysed after two strokes and needed a high level of nursing care. All of the staff were fabulous throughout, caring and attentive. When she was well enough, they got her up into a wheelchair so she could join the other residents for activities and meals. They even managed to get her out on their bus for trips, including to the New Forest for ice cream on one occasion and on another stopping in a pub garden for a half of bitter. She particularly enjoyed the visits from entertainers and the singalongs. The home kept us informed of her medical situation and were absolutely marvellous with her when it was time to go which she eventually did peacefully in her sleep. We couldn't have asked for more."

"My review is based on the care and support my family have had over the past three weeks whilst our mother has been in respite care. During this time the family have had to deal with many emotions in trying to get "our mum" to accept she is no longer safe to return home even with a care package in place. Throughout, mum has had first-class care and support as have we, her family. We know mum will be well looked after and safe in Barchester Challoner House Care Home. Thank you all."

"The garden and facilities are lovely and the staff friendly and very kind, but I have been very disappointed with some aspects of management, particularly on the nursing side and in respect of lost items. No inventory is taken nor any note made of items that have disappeared. It is often difficult to get things done - for example, it has taken weeks for my mother to have ear drops administered."

"The care given to my sister by all of the Challoner staff was second to none. They cared for her with dignity and skill, thoughtfulness and compassion. Always respectful, they also supported us as a family. We were reassured that my sister was in safe and caring hands."

"Father has enjoyed his stay at Barchester Challoner House Care Home again. The staff are very friendly and make a fuss of him. Since the redecoration, the public rooms have a much lighter look and feel. Very nice."

"Lovely surroundings and nursing staff. Felt a little more communication from management once mum was admitted would have been helpful in order to smooth the settling in process. Food and housekeeping excellent and safe, warm and comfortable environment."

"Most of the time things run well, but recently they seem to have been short staffed - and that has meant a lower standard of service. In recent months I have raised concerns about the standard of care my mother has been receiving, but no response has been forthcoming. I'm hopeful that recent changes will lead to an improvement in the service."

"I go in as a volunteer most weeks. I spend time with the resident, painting nails when they have had their hair done by the hairdresser. Staff are always welcoming to me - even though it's only once a week. Always a pleasant atmosphere."

"My father was admitted to Challoner in a very poor state, having suffered a fractured pelvis which left him unable to cope at home suffering a series of falls. Due to the excellent care from all the staff, he has made a remarkable recovery. All his sores have disappeared (due to his hospital stay), he is eating well and he has put on 10lbs in weight. I would highly recommend the home as there are plenty of staff who are very friendly and helpful. The quality and quantity of food is excellent and the activities and facilities are very good. More importantly, my father is happy there."

"I think Challoner House is a good care home with plenty of entertainment. The only criticism I have is that my friend has been left with food uneaten as she cannot do it herself. Cold cups of tea etc."

"Since I have been here, I have found staff very helpful and caring and very patient, even when extremely busy and short staffed, but it does vary with different members of staff. Basically, I think they all work extremely hard and have been very caring when anyone becomes emotional."

"From the first time I visited Challoner House to visit a resident (now deceased), I have found the home to be a very good unit compared to hospital units! I visited as Chaplain. The care is up with some of the best, and better than many. I have found the staff helpful and supportive of my ministry, and very caring towards residents. I frequently recommend Challoner House to people who are looking for residential care for relatives."

"My mother was diagnosed as terminal with a brain tumour but was not 'ill' enough to go to the local hospice. She required 24 hour personal care however, which I was not able to do on my own so I chose Challoner House, as it had all the personal and nursing care that would be needed as she deteriorated as well as a lively and cheerful atmosphere. From first to last (approx 10 weeks) every member of staff was fantastic. Mum was always comfortable, clean and entertained and I was also looked after on my mostly daily visits. When mum was still 'with it' she always said how lovely everyone was. What I was most grateful for was that I was called at night when her condition changed for the worse so I was able to be with her for her last few hours. I was treated with such respect and compassion. I can't thank all at Challoner House enough!"

"Spent many months in and out of hospital, nice to come to a home that feels like home not hospital. Wonderful kind staff, friendly, helpful and residents are treated with respect and dignity. Would highly recommend the home to anyone. It's in a lovely discreet location and very calm and quiet."

"My mother has been a resident for only six weeks. Every time my brother and myself visit we always receive an extremely warm welcome from all of the staff no matter what designation, from carers to managers. We are always offered tea and cake (their speciality!) nothing is too much trouble for the staff. My mothers care is incredible every little thing is attended to especially by carers and night carer a particular favourite with my mother who always bring her a cup of tea in the early hours before she even asks for it!! The only minor detail is that breakfast is sometimes quite a late, but my mother does get up early, staff already think about that in providing a "goody box" for her to have with her early cup of tea. Beautiful new refurb like a five star hotel."
