Activities at Hickathrift House Care Home
We have two Activities Coordinators here at Hickathrift House. We have a wide range of activities within the home, including musical entertainment, arts & crafts, clubs for like-minded people, such as flower arranging and gardening, board games, baking (where the best bit is the eating afterwards!), and we celebrate special events throughout the year. We also have trips out on a regular basis using our own minibus, where we find out places of interest each person would like to visit.
It is important to us that each individual who we support can get as much from these activities as possible, so we try our best to arrange activities that reflect their interests and capabilities, and encourage them to participate in any way they can. We also encourage relatives to join in with activities and events as often as they can.
For the less mobile residents, we unique one-to-one session, such as simple chats over a cup of tea, reading or listening to music. Activities are some of the most important aspects of a care home, so it is essential that our team are dedicated to ensuring that residents are entertained, and that life at Hickathrift House is fun and active.
Kat Colangelo
Hello, my name is Kat and I am the Activities Lead here at Hickathrift House.
Since 2017 I have been working in the field of well-being and I am passionate and enthusiastic about enriching all our of residents' quality of life.
As the Activities Lead at Hickathrift House, my focus is learning about each of our resident's likes and dislikes and supporting them to remain receptive and active in addition to supporting them to engage with our local community friends.
I organise activities to stimulate the mind, body and soul in an enjoyable, comfortable way. My aim is to diversify and increase activities ensuring that there is something for everyone - from Wine and Cheese events, excursions on our home Mini Bus as well as individual bespoke person-centered activities.
Read our brochure 'Life-enriching activities' for more information about life in our care homes.

Life at Hickathrift House Care Home
Elf Day
Staff at Hickathrift celebrated Elf Day on Friday 7th December to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society. There was also an ‘Elfy’ afternoon tea party with singing, dancing and lots of treats to enjoy.
Christmas Market Success
Residents, families and visitors had a brilliant time at the annual Christmas Market on Tuesday 20th November. It was filled with Christmas music, mince pies and various stalls for people to shop from. There were lots of Christmas goodies and we all went home with empty purses. We raised £175.62, which will go onto our residents' fund. Thank you to everyone who attended.
The Remembrance Tree Returns
We have a remembrance tree in our reception for people to add hearts to and written messages to their loved ones who are no longer with us. If you would like to add a message to the tree, please pop into reception. If you have any questions or queries, please contact us on 01945 430636.
Honouring the Fallen
Hickathrift House commemorated Remembrance Sunday on Sunday 11th November, and joined the rest of the United Kingdom in holding a two-minute silence at 11am.
As well as marking Remembrance Day by wearing poppies and watching the televised service, some residents were taken to the local cenotaph to commemorate the members of the armed forces who have died in the line of duty.
The residents had been really busy in the run up to the day making their own poppies out of plastic bottles to create a display on the fence outside of the home.
We were very proud to receive some trees from the Queens Commonwealth Canopy. Michelle Taylor, Head of the Memory Lane Community at Hickathrift House, applied for the trees and they kindly donated three to the home. Resident, Gerard Cater, planted them next to the beautiful display on Remembrance Sunday.
Halloween at Hickathrift
Residents had fun on Tuesday 30th October when they made some pumpkins in preparation for Halloween. Some were scarier than others, but everyone enjoyed the display.
10 Years for Russell
Carer, Russell, started at Barchester in October 2008 and has worked with residents and their relatives to ensure that their needs have been met over the years. Here's to another 10 years!
