Activities at Kernow House Care Home
Our Activities Coordinators organise varied and regular events. The activities that take place depend on what our residents tell us they are interested in and the feedback we get from their families. We currently have pop-up cafes where we socialise and maybe visit the hairdresser. We have regular live music events, a storyteller and visits from animals and we are often joined by families or friends during our social activities where they are always most welcome.
Living in Cornwall the surrounding countryside offers many beauty spots and we often have trips out to wherever our residents would like to go. At other times a walk to nearby shops or cafes is what we enjoy.
Louise is our hairdresser and she is with us twice a week. Louise also supports us during our weekly Namaste sessions where she offers hand massages in a relaxing environment. Every Thursday afternoon we have a time of worship supported by our local community. Our ice cream van, Kernow Kones, and our mobile pub, Kernow Keg, also make a weekly appearance. We have monthly clubs, when we play bingo or watch a film in our pop-up cinema. Residents on all units are invited to take part in a monthly Resident’s Meeting and they tell us what they would like.
Apart from these regular events, we also celebrate special occasions and often have musical entertainers to visit but we also make our own fun. All staff take part in fancy dress or charity events that we support and often what we do evolves through interaction between residents and care or activity staff. All this makes Kernow House a vibrant place to be where things happen both as group activities as well as on an individual level.

Life at Kernow House Care Home
Running for Dementia
Sarah Sharland is our Occupational Therapist and a keen runner. She has just run The Great West Run, which is a half marathon, and although she had to run in wet weather, she managed to complete the distance in her usual time. More importantly, she raised £195 for Dementia UK! Well done, Sarah, and thank you to everyone who encouraged and sponsored her!
The Last Bit of Sunshine
It was a beautiful, sunny day, so we took advantage of the lovely weather by going for a bus trip to Colliford Lake on Bodmin Moor. There’s absolutely nothing by the lake other than the wonderful landscape nature has left for us, so we brought our own ice cream and enjoyed them whilst admiring the view. We try to go out for rides like this whenever possible and we are lucky to be surrounded by beautiful places.
National Poetry Day
We sometimes get together and read short stories or poetry, just because some people really enjoy listening to a good story or remembering verses learnt long ago. National Poetry Day gave us the excuse to share well-loved poems and Charles Causley, our local poet, is always welcomed here warmly. Victor Body brought some of his own poems and kindly shared them with us. We look forward to many more afternoons reading together with a cup of tea and a cake to hand.
Macmillan Coffee Morning
We take part in many fundraising events at Kernow House, so when it was Macmillan Coffee Morning, we organised a raffle and baked lots of cake for the occasion.. We raised £64.18 in total and enjoyed eating scrumptious treats.
Jeans for Genes Day
Jeans for Genes Day is a national events that invites people to wear jeans to raise money and awareness for people living with life-altering genetic disorders.
Huntington’s is a genetic disorder and, as a home with several residents who are affected by this condition, we like to take part in raising awareness. We did this by wearing jeans and setting up stalls to sell various items as a way to raise money for the occasion.
Thank you to everyone who took part in this event by wearing jeans, donating to our stalls or buying from them.
Animal House
Residents always love it when we are visited by animals. We were recently joined by Senara Collins, who brought with her a pygmy hedgehog, a hairless guinea pig, a rabbit, an owl, a royal python and a boa constrictor.
All of the animals went around the home, so even the less mobile residents had a chance to see them.
Pictured is Carer, Bonnie Burley, who was happy to let the boa constrictor slide around her, whilst resident, Victor, petted the majestic creature.
