Activities at Laurel Bank Care Home

Activities are a fundamental part of a rich and varied lifestyle here at Laurel Bank Care Home, which is why we organise both physically and mentally stimulating social events for those we support. The weekly itinerary is ever-changing, and regularly includes art lessons, chair-based exercise, trips and visits from a variety of different animals, as well as one-to-one time for residents who prefer the peace and quiet. Our team actively tries to incorporate the hobbies and interests that are meaningful to residents into the activities schedule as encouragement to continue with much-loved pastimes.

Jaimy Lee Almond

Activities Coordinator

Hi, my name is Jaimy Lee, and I am the Activities Coordinator here at Laurel Bank.

I have worked in the care home industry for over nine years. I started working at Laurel Bank in 2018 as a carer, and then, I was promoted to senior carer which I thoroughly enjoyed.

I moved over to activities in 2020, as I was asked to help out and help encourage residents to join in. During this, I realised how much fun it could be and chose to stay on and got promoted to Activities Coordinator.

I love my role as every day is different and I try to make sure the residents are happy and engage in meaningful activities, this also helps support the transition for new residents.

Life at Laurel Bank Care Home

Families reunite

For some residents at Laurel Bank care home in Lancaster, the long awaited reunion with family and friends became a reality recently, as limited garden visits have now been allowed to commence at the home.   The home would like to give a special thank you to Harvey at Ash Tree Marquees for making himself and his team available at short notice to erect a marquee in the garden, to allow visits to go ahead whatever the weather.

It was welcome news to so many residents, family and friends, who were kept apart for so long following strict government guidance. Residents and their relatives enjoyed getting together in the home’s garden, and the garden was full of joy and chatter.   Lyndsay Scott, General Manager at the home, said: “This has been a much welcomed development in what have been very strange times. The visits are well organised, and a lot of safety measures have been put in place to keep everyone safe. It was wonderful to see how happy it made the residents and their relatives.”

Staying Connected

Residents at Laurel Bank have been staying connected with loved ones throughout the pandemic via Skype calls. Staff are assisting residents to make over 30 such video calls a week, as it is so important for families to keep in touch at the moment.

Keep Smiling Through

Activity Coordinators, Jamie and Elizabeth, proudly displayed their colourful banner outside the home in an effort to boost community spirit in the area and remind people to keep smiling through these difficult times.

Over the Rainbow

Residents spent time colouring rainbows and posing for photographs to send to their families recently at Laurel Bank to let them know that we’re doing well here, keeping busy and keeping hope alive. We will get through this together!

National Tea Day

In these unprecedented times, providing a range of engaging activities for our residents is more important than ever. Residents really enjoyed the choice of teas, cakes and events for National Tea Day and, as a nation who truly loves their tea, it was great excuse for an afternoon brew and a natter. It was also a good way to celebrate our longest reigning monarch!

Easter Celebrations

Staff at Laurel Bank prepared an Easter surprise for residents to lift their spirits in these tough times. The Easter Fayre was scheduled for Good Friday, and there was supposed to be afternoon tea, live music, games and a raffle. However, due to the circumstances at the moment, this was all cancelled, and instead, staff took the time to take everybody into the garden to enjoy the sunshine and fresh air.

What also came as a nice surprise for the residents were Easter eggs for all! Every member of staff and every resident was treated to a traditional chocolate egg, which put a lot of smiles on a lot of faces!

Many residents also enjoyed virtual church services, either on one of the tablets in the home or through the BBC's ‘Songs of Praise’. Many residents at the home survived World War 2, and are used to coming together through tough times.
