Activities at Lethen Park Care Home

Activities are the cornerstone of a wholesome home experience and our Activities Coordinators are always putting their creative minds to the test by organising new and exciting social events for residents to partake in. Of course, we take into account the likes and dislikes of those we support, so if someone doesn’t feel like trying something new, there will always be something on offer to reflect their personal interests. For the people who may just prefer some peace and quiet instead, we also offer one-to-one time that can be enjoyed with a nice cup of coffee or just a simple chat – whatever they desire.

Amanda McCarthy

Activities Coordinator

We all know that keeping active is important. We have created a wonderful culture within the home and we work together to give residents the best possible experience. We are here to ensure that residents enjoy an environment that is both stimulating and socially active. We ensure the team knows each residents' preferences, so that we can deliver a person-centered program of events and activities. Essential to our homely feel is the strong relationships of trust we build with residents and their families and friends

Life at Lethen Park Care Home

Puffin Rescue Centre - a peek into their lives

We took a wonderful virtual trip to Iceland’s Puffin Rescue Centre at the Beluga Whale Sanctuary.

We were able to virtually meet some of the rescued Atlantic Puffins and to learn interesting facts about their care and unique lives. We took a peek into their lives in the wild, the Puffling rescue program in the Westman Islands, and how SEA LIFE Trust Beluga Whale Sanctuary’s team takes care of these charismatic little birds each day.

It was a very exciting experience, enjoyed by all.

WW2 virtual talk with Blenheim Palace

Ahead of Armed Forces Day, we were transported back in time for a World War II themed talk and tour of Blenheim Palace, hosted by Antonia Keaney, the Palace’s social historian and author.

Entitled ‘Evacuees and Espionage,’ Antonia’s wartime themed talk focused on how the Marlborough family, estate staff and the Palace itself played a full and energetic part in the war effort.

The talk and tour told the story of how the Palace prepared for the worst, survived the onslaught of 400 boys being evacuated to Blenheim and kept the secrets of MI5.

It was a lovely experience, enjoyed by all.

National Carers Week

Lethen Park care home in Portlethen, run by Barchester Healthcare, held a day of celebrations to thank care staff at the home, who make a real difference to the lives of those in their care.

Staff were treated to chocolates, pizza and a beatuful cake and a card signed by staff and residents.

Carers Week is an annual event to raise awareness of caring, highlighting the challenges carers face, and recognising the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK, which now, is more important than ever. Carers have a vital job in the care of residents throughout the home, and form very special bonds with the people they look after. They are the day-to-day face of our home, working directly with residents and families to ensure the very best quality care and support is given.

Hereford Catherdral virtual tour

Staff and residents at Barchester’s Lethen Park were invited to a virtual tour and talk about the wonders of Hereford Cathedral led by a team of staff and volunteers who look after the magnificent cathedral building.

Hereford is home to one of the oldest cathedrals in England.  The site of the cathedral has been a place of worship since the 8th Century, the date the cathedral was founded is thought to be 696 and religious services have taken place since medieval times.

Resident receives MBE

Residents and staff at Lethen Park Care Home in Portlethen paid tribute to an honorary veteran resident to commemorate the 77th anniversary of the D-Day landings.

To honour the largest combined land, air and naval operation in history, Lethen Park marked the 77 years since the D-Day landings on 6 June 1944 - the start of the campaign to liberate Nazi-occupied north-west Europe- with a tribute to their resident veteran James Gordon who was in the Black Watch Regiment. James has also received an MBE and is awaiting to go to the investiture next year.

On D Day James was awaiting to board a troop ship called Cape Town Castle (an ex liner ship) in Greenock. James “It took us 10 days to get there, we slept in Hammocks in the Boat. Once the ship docked I was then stationed in Egypt”.

Residents enjoy trip to Safari Park

Here at Lethen Park in Portlethen we were pleased to be able to dive into the wild safari life of Knowsley Safari and to enjoy an amazing live stream tour of the park’s grounds.

Our residents were smiling and laughing as they got up close and personal with some of the safari’s most popular animals, including giraffes and meerkats.

We had a wonderful time learning more about the animals and enjoying some live feeding demonstrations.
