Activities at Overslade House Care Home

Our activities team is dedicated to organising a variety of events and activities and adapting them to suit the capabilities of those we support. Our goal is to improve quality of life by providing activities that are tailored to residents' own interests.

At Overslade House, we encourage local people and businesses to participate, as well as our staff and relatives, in order to keep them involved as part of a wider community. We strive to enhance the quality of both mental and physical stimulation through weekly minibus excursions, PAT dogs, quizzes, Zumba classes, arm chair line dancing, musical entertainers, pamper sessions and much more.

We definitely have something for everyone!

Julie Bateman

Activities Lead

Hi, my name is Julie, and I'm the lead Activities Lead here at Overslade House. I've been an entertainer for over 25 years which has given me a great foundation for meeting people from various backgrounds, and has also helped nurture my social skills.

I love animals, and have two Dachshunds of my own who, like me, love meeting new people. I'm looking forward to bringing them in to meeting all our lovely residents here at Overslade.

I'm a bit of a social butterfly and enjoy visiting National Trust locations, attending the Theatre, singing and dining out. Over the years I've even been an 'extra' on TV!

Living life to the full is my motto, and I wish to instil this in all our residents, whatever your ability there is something new to learn or try. Life is for enriching and enjoyment. I look forward to getting to know you and your loved ones. We are always open to new ideas, if you'd like to contact me please call the home on 01788 522577 or email me direct on overslade.activities@barchester.com - New entertainers always welcome.

Tuesday's Cookery Class

Today’s cookery class was headed by our Resident Ambassador; Anne. She managed to take us all down memory lane by making a traditional pudding. “Anne’s Trifle”, a recipe that Anne has made throughout her life, included custard made from scratch, jam smothered sponge and freshly whipped cream topped with hundreds and thousands. The smells were amazing and the trifle tasted fabulous! Thanks Anne.

Asda Gifts of Kindness

Our residents and staff were overwhelmed today when Asda delivered an amazing hamper full of treats. Allie Scrace – Community Champion kindly put together some delicious sweet treats and a variety of toiletries to be enjoyed by all. We have shared the items out around the home for all the residents to enjoy, it really brought them so much happiness receiving these kind donations. @AsdaRugby @BarchesterTogether

Teddy Bear Day

Today we invited our residents to join us in the coffee shop for Teddy Bear Day; 9th September, 2020. We had tea, cake, biscuits and 3 very special guests. Our guests came from one of the carer’s very impressive collection of over 100 ‘Charlie Bears’. The residents loved having a cuddle with Crumpet, Beau and Wojtek whilst listening to the history of these gorgeous bears.

One resident from our Rupert Brooke Suite even brought her own teddy along and spoke to us about him. “Scooby” is 68 years old and was bought on the ladies first day of working in a music shop when she was 13 years old in 1952. We all loved hearing about the history of Scooby and really enjoyed our time with the residents in the coffee shop.

National Fish & Chip Day - A Day at the Beach!

For National Fish and Chip Day Overslade House’s residents enjoyed a trip to our homemade beach in the garden. Fish and chips always tastes better at the beach so we weren’t going to let our residents miss out. As well as fish and chips no visit to the beach is complete without an ice-cream. Therefore the Overslade House ice-cream van was born. The residents had fun choosing their own toppings from our topping tray and were extremely happy with their ice-creams in our predictably grey British weather.

The fun didn’t stop there as one residents (John Smith) got all the men to knot hankies for their heads as he remembers doing as a child at the seaside. Another resident (Anne Fletcher) led the Overslade choir in a rendition of “Oh I Do Like to be Beside the Seaside.” A great day was had by staff and residents alike and we are keeping our fingers crossed for a trip out to the beach next summer.

Scotch Egg Making

This morning’s master class covered - Scotch egg making. Our residents who are part of the Overslade House Cookery Club enjoyed choosing this recipe as they all had a role to play; egg peeling, sausage mixing, bread crumbing and finally sending them off to the kitchen to be cooked!

The final product came out brilliantly, our chefs were very impressed, and certainly enjoyed tasting them over supper.
