Activities at Oxford Beaumont Care Community

Our Activities Coordinators are committed to organising a mix of activities and events that cater to all tastes, which includes minibus outings to nearby places of interest and visits from animal trusts, local school choirs, musicians and entertainers. We also undertake one-to-one activities for residents who are unable to participate in group sessions, and encourage loved ones to join in whenever they can.

Guide Dog Barclay delights

Oxford Beaumont had a wonderful visit this morning from Sonia and her Guide dog, Barclay!

Sonia chatted to our residents who were fascinated to learn about Barclay’s exceptional skills and his loyal companionship in the way he supports Sonia to carry out her daily tasks.

Residents and staff loved meeting the new furry friend and feeding him a treat for being so well behaved!

Keeping History Alive

So todays topic at history club was philosophy. Residents enjoyed discussing different values, meanings and quotes that we have as individuals and what we believe in is right or wrong.

In a creative way the residents did different words on paper and each individual had to do a statement questions from them. One resident said she really enjoyed the different answers and preferences from everyone.

Having Fun Outside

As the sun was shining and the skies are blue the residents had a delightful stroll around the gardens of the home. #barchester100hoursoutside

Also outside the residents enjoyed a ball exercise which is great for physical and mental well being.

Taking Time to Remember; Winnie

Following a week of remembrance, staff and residents at Oxford Beaumont Care Community in Boars Hill, Oxford have been raising a glass, and briefly resting their feet, after receiving the gift of a garden bench from the family of one of their former residents.

The surprise donation, which stands at the entrance of the home, was a gift from the family of Winnie Young.

Winnie was a loving and sociable resident, who would always be dressed for an occasion, with a set of beads around her neck, just in case she had visitors. Winnie passed away peacefully in January 2021, and as the family came to terms with her loss they were sadly faced with the sudden passing of her daughter, Lorraine the same year.

The family wished to remember Winnie and her daughters togetherness by providing a memorial bench and donating it to Oxford Beaumont. They wanted to provide something that was not only useful for everyone at Oxford Beaumont but a memorial to Winnie and Lorraine.

The final piece was a beautifully crafted wooden bench created by the Oxfordshire based; RAW Workshop. Handmade from softwood with rounded front panels for comfort when seated and beautifully engraved in memory of Winnie and Lorraine.

Yolande, Winnie’s daughter and Lorraine’s sister along with her husband, and Barry, Lorraine’s husband and several of Winnies great-grandchildren joined our home manager; Nicoleta to the front of the home where the bench has been placed.

The benches location is just perfect for our residents who wish to sit outside, as it’s sheltered from the elements and only a few steps from the foyer. It’s also ideal for our many visitors to take a seat whilst waiting to be seen.

Our home manager, Nicoleta confirmed “the bench is not only a lovely gift its and long-lasting memory we can treasure. We cannot thank the family enough, it was a pleasure to care for Winnie, and she and her daughter will remain in our hearts and thoughts forever.”

Remembrance Day

Residents this week have been reflecting and sharing stories of those that died and the sacrifices made in both World Wars. To express our commemoration we created a beautiful poppy display to hang in our reception, decorated cupcakes and listened to a reading of ‘Flanders Fields’ by John McCrea, which inspired residents to write their own poems.

This week has also involved a virtual National Ballet Remembrance Day workshop and a Church Service in our lounge this afternoon.

‘We should always remember they gave their lives up so we can live today. Must never forget they shed their blood for us’ - written by Janet in our poetry session.
