Activities at Sutton Grange Care Home
Here at Sutton Grange we work really hard at providing a range of activities to suit our residents needs. We understand that everyone is different and we enjoy supporting our residents in whatever activities they would like to take part in. With a dedicated Activities co-ordinator and a friendly team of volunteers we are always busy with activities. We have several clubs including; gardening, film, craft, music, puzzles, and singing. We enjoy live music and entertainment, both in and outside of the home, and have regular outings on the minibus to local places of interest. Residents take part in animal assisted therapy, afternoon tea, arts and crafts classes, and visits from local community groups and school children. We believe it is important to provide stimulating, meaningful and relevant activities for our residents in order to make friends, and build a warm community to live.
Alison Wareing
Hi, I'm Alison. I am the Activities Assistant here at Sutton Grange, I joined the team in 2016.
I grew up in the local area and started my career working with animals. After I had my daughter, and before I joined Barchester, I trained as a teacher and taught lipreading and communication. The skills I learnt have been invaluable in my role today.
Now, I fill my days spending time with our wonderful Residents, helping them to live their lives to the fullest. I try to make a difference in someone’s life each day.
Read our brochure 'Life-enriching activities' for more information about life in our care homes.

Life at Sutton Grange Care Home
Poppy Day
Armistice Day, coming just the day before Remembrance Sunday, meant a poignant weekend sharing residents’ experiences and memories of World War 2.
Letter of the Week
Highlights for Autumn were residents’ personal successes, including Tom Rayson, whose photography won a competition and will be featured in a calendar on sale for the Barchester Foundation. Not to be outdone, Residents’ Rep, Ken Bullough, soon after having his poetry published, was interviewed on camera for a BBC documentary about his work as a chemist. Just a week later, he won The Southport Visitor’s 'Letter of the Week' with his Armistice poem, ‘Only Sixteen.’
A Cute Visitor
Since our new nursing unit, Silver Birth, opened recently, this little puppy has become a frequent visitor and loves all the cuddles on offer.
Barchester's 25th Anniversary
Local singer, Rachel Rose, joined us for our Silver Jubilee Party to celebrate Barchester twenty five years.
Autumn Harvest & Toffee Apples
We have continued to enjoy the garden as the seasons change, in particular, the rosy red apples from our trees, which we made into toffee apples. The allotment gave us quite an array of squashes.
National Poetry Day
Tony O’Neill – voted ‘People’s Poet of Liverpool' – took time out from his writing schedule to spend National Poetry Day at Sutton Grange.
We all enjoyed hearing him read from his collections and some of the residents had their own poetry to share as well. Most notably, Ken, whose anthology has just been published as a surprise for his birthday.
Tony O’Neill was so impressed by the calibre of writing, that he has very kindly agreed to be Sutton Grange’s Poet in Residence, and is now working on a piece to commemorate Barchester’s Silver Anniversary.
We are all thrilled to have our own prize-winning poet on the team and the residents look forward to future collaborations.
