Activities at Upton Bay Care Home

Activities are an integral part of life at our care home. We want to ensure that the people we support have as much fun as possible during their time with us, so it’s important that our activities programme is created with the interests of residents in mind. Our skilled Activities Coordinators bring a certain uniqueness to the home that can’t be found anywhere else, and which is reflected in the activities they organise.

Karen Grant

Activities Lead, Dementia Champion

I first worked in the care sector in 2010, starting in domiciliary care and progressing to Care Coordinator. I have since gained a wealth of experience in dedicated dementia and residential activities, working as a peripatetic activities coordinator in 16 out of 20 homes within a group, and then in 2018, I was part of a team that commissioned a new luxury care home, where I was an Activities Team Leader.

I enjoy making wishes come true for residents: in February 2015, I organised my first wedding in a care home. The lady resident who was living with dementia was unable to travel to Hertfordshire for her granddaughters wedding, so I brought the wedding to her. I organised a wedding blessing at the home; we had a vicar, a choir, all of the bridal party, the flowers, a buffet, a wedding cake, champagne—the full works.

In 2017, I organised a smaller wedding in the garden, and this was a special wish for a gentleman resident to see his granddaughter married. Organising these special moments gives me a lot of pleasure, knowing I have made them feel special and to give families that happiness and see them smile.

I cannot wait to welcome our residents into their wonderful new home and help to bring smiles, joy and laughter to each day.

Karen is also one of our dementia champions

We're Snookered!

We're Snookered!

Our Games room is open! Featuring air hockey, table top football, and snooker, this fun and relaxing space is excellent use of one of our quiet lounges.

Residents David and Michael kicked back this afternoon over a game of snooker, although the first few games were mostly practice shots, as after a while since holding the cue, were a bit rusty! Michael was an excellent tutor and had a very steady hand!

A brilliant way to bring our gents together over a some sporting fun!

Don't Step on my Blue Suede... Slippers!

Exercise comes in many shapes... and we were certainly throwing some this week with the help of musician Simon Woodley!

Everyone's afternoon highlight was watching Tony, one of our lovely gentleman residents, take to the floor to perform his beloved ballroom to the adoring crowd! Tony proved he's still got it! BBC Strictly Come Dancing we'll be waiting by the phone...

A Blooming Marvelous Bus Trip!

Another Tuesday, another bus trip!

Today, we took a leisurely drive down to our local Haskins Garden Centre for a spot of afternoon tea, and a browse round all the lovely plants coming to life this spring.

Nothing like a natter in the coffee shop, and time spent in the sunshine with friends. It can be so refreshing to get out and about in our lovely town!

Do you have any favourite spots for a drive or afternoon tea? Comment below and it might be next on our sat-nav!

Fabulous Florals!

We would like to say a very big thank you to Tesco Lytchett Matravers for the oh so kind donation of beautiful bunches of tulips!

The residents at Upton Bay have had a wonderful morning creating gorgeous floral displays to place around the home.

Eve said, "They are the first sign that spring has sprung!"

The Mind is like a Seed: You Need to Water it in order for it to Grow…

We can’t quite believe this sunny spell in beautiful Poole, and have been spending every hour this week cultivating the courtyard garden within Upton Bay’s grounds.

Reaping the benefits of lots of vitamin D, our residents have been getting involved with sensory stimulation and activities looking after the plants, herbs and flowers.

We moved breakfast club to the bandstand, enjoying social time together over croissants and tea!

Sunshine on my Shoulders..

We've been welcoming the warmer weather today with open arms, basking in the afternoon sunshine in our gardens!

A few active games to give us a stretch, including a few near misses in a game of skittles, mostly toward maintenance manager Pedro!

We're looking forward to a glorious springtime!
