Activities at Upton Bay Care Home

Here at Upton Bay Care Home, we were pleased to be able to dive into the golden age of ocean travel and enjoy a virtual ‘Ocean Liners: Speed and Style’ talk, provided by V&A Dundee.

We learned about the remarkable stories of the Titanic, Normandie, the Queen Mary and the Canberra, from their engineering and interior design to the stunning fashions worn on board.

Though the golden age of ocean travel has long since passed, the ocean liner still remains a potent symbol of 20th century modernity.

The talk brought a lot of great memories to our residents and triggered interesting conversations about past cruising experiences around the world.

In recognition of National Vegetarian Week, team members and residents at Upton Bay Care Home enjoyed a virtual cooking demonstration, generously provided by Vegetarian for Life, a leading authority on diet and healthy living advice for older vegans and vegetarians. 

The exciting virtual culinary session was hosted by professional chef Alex, who made healthy quick and easy vegetarian dishes, including Borlotti bean and dill pate, Greek fritters with tzatziki, coronation ‘chicken’ and banana bread.

In preparation for the event, the home’s chef prepared the same snacks and refreshments for the residents to enjoy during the demonstration. 

Everyone at the home was delighted to be a part of this lovely virtual session by tasting the vegetarian dishes from the comfort of the home.

Residents at Upton Bay marked the anniversary of VE Day in style by throwing a 1940s afternoon tea party to remember. The home was decorated in red, white and blue and residents and staff dressed up in their 1940s-inspired glad rags and enjoyed an afternoon of reminiscing, music and laughter.

Head chef Alain whipped up a delicious selection of freshly-baked cakes, sandwiches and pastries for the occasion, all washed down with a delicious pot of tea or two.

Residents observed the national two minute silence and listened again to Churchill’s iconic speech and an address from the Queen.

This time we stayed local to explore the stunning scenery which is very much on the doorstep of Upton Bay Care Home, this included a stop at Poole Quay, the beautiful Poole Park and lastly Sandbanks for an ice cream stop.

Lots of smiles all round.

What a beautiful 'sunshiney' week it's been, it's great to take in our surroundings and the distant sea views from one of our many balconies, our wonderful garden and all of the bright lounges and bedrooms with direct garden access.

We feel so lucky to have so much outside space and great views to both Cobbs Quay and the Harbour.

Staff and residents at Upton Bay care home in Hamworthy were delighted to welcome the members of Carnaud Metal Box Pensioners Association into their garden to toast the bench they very generously donated to the home.

Metal Box was the name given to the factory that used to sit on the care home’s site. The new bench has taken pride of place in the exact spot that the factory chimney once stood, alongside the plaque we had installed to mark the location when the building work was complete.

The Association members raised a glass with General Manager, Mevin Sohorye. They shared stories and memories from their time working at the factory. Between the group, they have over 100 years of time spent at the factory, so many tales to tell.

Mevin, said: “We are so very grateful to the CMB Pensioners Association for such a generous donation. We understand their pride and passion for the history of the factory and all that it means to them. The bench looks great next to our chimney plaque and we have told the members, they are welcome any time to take a seat and reminisce.”

Reg Hatchard of the CMB Pensioners Association, commented: “We were keen to ensure a little bit of us was left here, the factory meant so much to so many and still does. I’m blown away by how smart the new care home is, really very impressed indeed.”
