What our families say on carehome.co.uk

"My father has just returned from his stay at Westvale House care home and thoroughly enjoyed his stay. This is the second time he has needed respite care at Westvale and he was looking forward to visiting the home again and seeing all the staff again. My father is non-verbal due to a stroke but is very independent, but the staff at Westvale look after him with dignity and care for all his needs. He loves sitting in the gardens at the rear of the care home as the scenery is beautiful and is very peaceful. When ringing the care home each day to ask how he is doing, the staff always know what he has been doing, what he has had for his meals and what activities he has been doing, so this is reassuring to me to know he is happy and in a safe place. When contacting the care home to arrange his respite by phone or email the manager and all the staff always get back to me with any queries I may have immediately. Would definitely recommend Westvale if you need temporary or emergency respite."

"My 85-year-old mum has just had 6 weeks of respite after a hip replacement. After 3 weeks in the hospital, they brought her back to the Mum we know, they have worked wonders. The staff are all great, always happy and smiling. She loved the food and made friends with the other residents. She enjoyed the activities and was encouraged to take part which is what we wanted. Thank you so much."

"Very happy with this home. The staff are very friendly and caring. Special mention goes to the member of staff in the office and Clement's nursing staff."

"I called to see my friend was moved to Barchester Westvale House Care Home. I have been a carer for a few years and have been in quite a few nursing homes and was very impressed. Outside was smart and welcoming. Reception were very nice, friendly and helpful. First impressions, clean and tidy, wheelchair friendly, large life, lovely decor and the dining room looked like a restaurant with menu displayed. Lovely, well done."

"I just feel at the moment they are short of staff, the rooms haven't always been cleaned to a good standard. The furniture in Mum's room is looking quite shabby (drawers not fitting well). Sometimes she is given food she doesn't like and she needs to eat because she's underweight. The regular staff are excellent."

"We are very grateful for the excellent care provided from the time my mother in law was discharged from hospital following two fractures until her death in September 2022. She reached the age of 102 so was extremely frail, and although she didn't manage to regain her mobility she did manage to enjoy the facilities in a wheel chair. Particularly impressive was the skin care."

"Again, so pleased with informal welcome as I came through the door. Staff are always interested - "you're Mother's hot three cards today"! Upstairs, "would you like a cup of tea as well"? Mum feels safe and comfortable."

"I am very happy with the care and consideration my sister receives at Westvale. More importantly, my sister likes the staff and routine in her life; she tells me so. The care she receives has stopped her from being admitted to the hospital, as was previously happening before she came to Westvale. Thank you seems such a small word to say to everyone at Westvale, but it's meant with sincerity."

"My mum has been in Westvale House Care Home for 18 months, since the middle of the pandemic. My mum loves living there, and the staff are all very caring and kind. My mum had a couple of visits from her friends over the past week. Both of them said to me how impressed they were with the welcome, cleanliness and friendliness at Westvale House - as am I. And how happy my mum is living in Westvale House - mum's friend said she had never seen someone living in a care home so happy! I chose Westvale House on the advice of a friend whose mum had been a resident there. I am really pleased we did, they have the highest standards of care and cleanliness for the residents and lots of activities for them."

"Our fiercely independent mum refused to go into any home. We her daughters were at our wit's end and found the general manager wonderfully reassuring. Her team delivered 100% superb quality of care, concern and support. Confident they were listening, proactive, reactive and competent, a couple of minor initial niggles were quickly resolved with good communication, smiles and a can-do attitude. The hallmarks of a professional facility. The food, gardens, furniture and cleanliness were exactly what we hoped they would be. At the end of Mum's life, the whole team guided us and ensured she had a serene and calm soft landing. We were overwhelmed by the compassion showed to us as we kept a 3 day vigil and want to especially thank (in no order) those who cared for us as we cared for Mum. Thank you to you all."

"Using all services as a resident for three and a half years the staff are charming to my friend and very positive under restrictions. Many thanks for your care and support during this challenging time. My friend always feels safe and secure living here and enjoys the high quality of care given. Activities and Church services on a Sunday are most important to her. The garden is an area my friend enjoys very much, weather permitting."

"Finding the right home for mum was a very difficult and upsetting time. It was such a relief to find Westvale House, it is a modern, bright and happy home. My mum looks like a different person in the time she has lived there and that is credit to the care and dedication of all the staff. She feels happy, safe and secure knowing that someone is always right there to help, reassure and look after her (particularly at night). The staff are friendly, professional and approachable. Mum has made friends, she enjoys sitting chatting and laughing with them and taking part in the varied activities, she always enjoys the singer. The food is excellent with lots of choices and mum looks forward to mealtimes. I would have no hesitation in recommending Westvale House Care Home."

"The care home is beautiful. Mum is treated with the utmost respect, dignity, and care as she approaches the end of her life. The staff work to ensure she is comfortable, spotlessly clean, and nothing is too much trouble. A calm place which is extremely well run by the best of people in its field."

"Our mum was admitted to Westvale House Care Home in December. It was Mum's, myself and my sibling's dread for Mum to be sent to a care home. On the day Mum arrived there she was really confused and very upset as was I. One member of staff in particular sat me down and she was really empathetic and listened to what I had to say and she comforted me. At the end of our conversation I felt reasurred that Mum was in the right place. We can visit Mum any time of the day or night. Mum seems to have settled really well. We can't give enough credit to all the staff who work there. The chef cooks amazing food for the residents. On arrival to Westvale you're greeted with refreshments. There's always a selection of beautiful homemade cakes. One member of staff in particular is a credit to Westvale. She also keeps the residents entertained. There are always lots of activities to keep their minds active. Thank you to all at Westvale for caring for our mum. I wouldn't hesitate recommending anybody to send their loved ones to Westvale."

"Barchester Westvale House Care Home is a purpose-built, friendly care home which is extremely clean. The care staff are amazing and go above and beyond to ensure that all residents are cared for in a warm and friendly environment. Residents are offered a variety of home-cooked, nutritious, tasty dishes from the daily menu. Hospitality offers a variety of daily activities to keep residents minds active. You can visit a resident any time, day/night, always greeted with a smile. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff. Westvale feels like a home from home which makes such a difference. I have had a few niggles along the way but these have been addressed and resolved quickly. My dad's en-suite room is extremely comfortable, bright and airy. Relatives decided to set up a gardening club, residents join in helping us make the grounds look lovely during the summer months. We are like one large family, all helping each other which creates a lovely atmosphere."

"Trying times and under pressure staff, they still, in my opinion, try incredibly hard to do their best for the residents. Certain members of staff going the extra mile to try and create a caring, smiling atmosphere! I personally am incredibly thankful to the majority of staff who try their hardest to make my wonderful wife's stay at Barchester Westvale House Care Home as comfortable and happy as possible! Thank you."

"After a lengthy hospital stay, we were so pleased that my dad was able to gain a place at Barchester Westvale House Care Home. He moved in within two days of being offered a place and the staff have been amazing, getting to know him and taking care of him. Nothing seems like too much trouble for the kind and friendly staff and management. Although his appetite is not what it once was, he is enjoying the food and his room is light and airy. We are very pleased with the care shown so far. Thank you."

"So very grateful to have found such a lovely, welcoming home for my dad to have regular respite stays. Upon my first viewing, I knew this was the right place for us. My dad's en-suite bedroom was so comfortable, bright and airy. Every time I rang him during his stay he was always upbeat and full of praise for all staff members. He would complement the food he'd had and said how well he had slept. I can't thank everyone enough for making my dad's stay perfect for him. My dad is booked to stay again while I go on holiday in October and both of us are so pleased that he is able to go back there. Many thanks to all."

"My sister moved into Barchester Westvale House Care Home in January this year after her care home was closed down. It was a really stressful time for us, as a family, as the closure was very sudden and we didn't have long to find a suitable home for her needs. From the onset, the manager at Westvale was truly amazing. She did everything in her power to reassure us, as a family, that they could cater for my sister, that she would be well cared for and that Westvale was the right home for her. The manager took away all the worries that we had, she listened to our many questions and queries and answered each one in a caring and professional manner. I cannot thank her enough for what she has done for my sister and us, as a family, since my sister moved there in January. All the staff at Westvale are really lovely and have made my sister feel right at home from the start. I am so glad we chose Westvale for my sister."

"My mum was admitted to Westvale in March from another local care home where the care had been lacking and the management shocking. The experience we had at Westvale was no less than outstanding. Lovely atmosphere, amazing staff, good nutritious food with plenty of options, and a manager who was visible and very much involved. Sadly, Mum passed away after only six weeks at the home. The last week of her life we camped out in her room. Each and every member of staff treated Mum with amazing respect and dignity, her care was outstanding. We were offered meals, drinks and anything we needed. We are truly grateful to everyone at the home for making Mum's last weeks comfortable and providing her with the care she deserved. Amazing care home and amazing staff."

"During Dad's relatively short time here, he was treated with the utmost care and respect by everyone at Westvale House. His room was comfortable with a lovely view into the garden, and although Dad rarely ventured into the lounge area, when he did, he really enjoyed what was going on. Generally, a very friendly atmosphere throughout the home with a fabulous group of dedicated and caring staff. Through what is always going to be a difficult time for everyone, their support and kindness to both Dad, my wife and I, especially during Dad's final days was truly outstanding - thank you all so much."

"Care and attention to detail. Support and knowing individual's needs/requirements. Nutrition and restaurant meals exceed expectations. On-site medical support, excellent. Entertainment. Activities every day which involve movement, coordination, brain stimulation. Carers display empathy, support, guidance. It's home from home. My dad is very well looked after on every level. If I had to make the choice again. I wouldn't move my dad. I'm always made welcome and my concerns listened to. It's rather a fabulous place."

"I can honestly not begin to express how fantastic the staff are at Westvale. My grandad moved in, in October and from the very beginning the staff could not do enough for him. From the management team to the domestic staff, they all went above and beyond for him. His face would always light up when staff came into his bedroom. They even helped with my nana when she would visit. Unfortunately, his stay wasn't too long and during his final day at Westvale, the staff was absolutely fantastic and could not do enough for us as a family to ensure we were also looked after and comfortable at that time. Once again I would just like to thank all the staff for everything."

"Dad struggled to settle when he first moved into the care home after losing is wife, of sixty-four years, only a few weeks prior to this. But after only seven weeks in the home and several changes to his medications plus the care he was receiving, he was more settled and enjoying interactions with all the staff despite missing his old home. He's had a recent short spell in hospital but it was lovely to hear him say he was looking forward to getting 'home; - meaning the care home! So reassuring for us, as a family."

"The service was excellent, the staff at Barchester Westvale House Care Home went the extra mile caring for my dad, until he passed, with the superb nursing care he received. The home is comfortable, safe and secure and welcomed my dad and family with compassion. The staff provide an excellent service to all and are a credit to the company. Thank you from all the family for the care my dad received, even if it was a short time."

"My mum went into Barchester Westvale House Care Home for end-of-life care on 11/07/2023. Sadly, she passed away on 25/08/2023 but the care she received whilst there was excellent in every way. Without exception, staff were warm, empathetic, professional and so caring (to both Mum and us). On discharge from a lengthy hospital stay, Mum was so poorly and frail that she was only expected to be in Westvale House for one to two weeks. She was actually there for over six weeks and we believe this is because of the quality of the care she received there and having all her medical needs fully met. Westvale has a calm atmosphere and everyone is made to feel welcome. Although Mum's appetite was small, she loved the food she had and her room was clean, bright and comfortable. For all the reasons already mentioned, we are so pleased that Mum's final weeks were in a place that was so caring and so responsive to her changing needs. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend Westvale to anyone looking for a home where the care is superb."

"Mu mum stayed at Westvale for one month. The care was palliative as she had suffered a huge stroke in November, that coupled with her Alzheimers was all too much for her sadly. The care received was very good and carers were all respectful and caring towards her. I have only praise and thanks for the team that took care of my dear mum. I would highly recommend to anyone."

"My neighbour went into hospital and then to the home for respite. While in the home he has been very happy with his room, the care he is getting, in fact, he wants to stay in the home instead of returning to his house. I think they are trying to get him in as a resident because of his standard of care."

"Very happy with this care home. They look after my Mum really well. It is expensive but I suppose you get what you pay for and only the best will do for my Mum. Each year the prices seem to go up a lot which leaves a slight sting in the tail but overall a very good care home."

"I have researched many care homes and my mum stayed in several for respite care. I can honestly say this is the best we have experienced. The staff and the facilities are second to none. The caring nature and atmosphere here make it a pleasure to visit and my mum is so happy here. The refurbishment has made this look like a 5 star hotel and the activities are always a pleasure. Highly recommend here!"

"Following a severe stroke, my aunt moved into Barchester Westvale House Care Home in November 2013 with a life expectancy of 3-4 months. She was totally bed-ridden and unable to do anything for herself. She survived for 4 years, this I attribute to the excellent care she received whilst in Barchester Westvale House Care Home. Whenever we visited (I did vary the times to check on her) she was always clean and tidy and she thoroughly enjoyed her meals. My aunt could be extremely difficult at times, the staff coped with her well and were courteous and she was dealt in a dignified manner, her privacy was upheld always. The staff were very welcoming to us and coffee offered if the trolley was doing its rounds! Can with all honesty recommend Barchester Westvale House Care Home wholeheartedly."

"Patients having to wait far too long for attention when requesting assistance ie commode request and when finishing on the toilet due to a shortage of staff however hard the work. Not a satisfactory situation in the morning that people are being washed, dressed and pills while using the commode, due to pressure on staff - again a lack of numbers. Eating utensils not up to standard in cleanliness."

"I took a long time to find a suitable home for dad and Westvale House was the best that I saw. I am glad that dad was there. He was an 'easy' gentleman to have to cope for as he was quiet and cooperative. However, he was unable to talk and this was real frustration as often the care staff didn't have the time to be with him or understand him. His room was adequate but could have been cleaner. However, overall, the staff were really good and kind to dad and gave him the best care they could."

"My sister and I went in every day to help by feeding Mum lunch. My mother was a resident in Westvale Nursing Home for around 3 years. Her care and the support she was given was excellent. All the staff did their utmost to make her comfortable, as Mum did not leave her bed for around 2-3 years. The only comment I can make is that there was never enough staff. The staff there worked so hard to look after the residents and the main nurse on the upstairs floor was excellent at her job, nothing was too much trouble."

"In my experience, there is not enough staff for all the patients. They do not do enough activities for the bed-bound patients that are aware of being bored. Patients are left too long to be changed etc i.e Staff shortages. My sister is happy here but does get depressed with the lack of activities etc. You need to employ people just for activities."

"Nice, clean friendly home but it is understaffed, not enough carers. Do not get me washed and dressed before 11.30 because there are not enough carers. My activities get cancelled, very little activities on offer. No outings on offer. Would be a marvellous care home if more caregiving and activities people."
