Singing has 'powerful benefits' for people with dementia

People in Wales are taking a novel approach to helping people with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia - singing for the brain.

The Alzheimer's Society has spearheaded the group singing sessions, which are helping people in Swansea, Caerphilly and Merthyr Tydfil, according to Wales Online.

Sue Phelps, interim director of the Alzheimer's Society in Wales, told the publication that the activity is "particularly rewarding" for people with dementia, as many are able to recall songs from their younger days.

"As a person's dementia develops, it is likely to have an impact on some of their abilities but there will still be lots that the person can enjoy doing, both individually and with others," she went on to say.

Earlier this month, the Alzheimer's Society announced that it will publish a report in January 2011 about how services for younger people with dementia in North East London can be improved.
