Activities at Camellia House Care Home

We understand that the people we support have passions and interests that could be difficult to pursue after moving into a care home – but that doesn’t mean we don’t encourage them to try! Some hobbies can define a person, so our Activities Coordinators are dedicated to ensuring that everyone we support is able to do what makes them happy to the best of their abilities. Social events are organised with individual tastes in mind and with the idea that residents have the opportunity to try new and exciting things.

Linda Wilkie

Activities Coordinator

I have worked in this home for nearly 30 years, so it is very much part of my life. I started as a part-time Domestic when my children were small and, as time has gone by, I have become a Senior Carer and the Activities Coordinator.

I have NAPA and OOMPH qualifications, as well as an NVQ Level 3 Health and Social Care.

I am very passionate about my role, as it is very important to us as a team that every individual is able to live the life they wish, feeling fulfilled in their mind, body and soul, maintaining past hobbies, yet have the opportunity to try new experiences.

I have built up a very good rapport with our team, our residents, family and friends, and I have built many links with the local community, which all help the residents get the most out of life at Camellia House.

I enjoy every day; the smiles on the faces I see are reward for doing a job I love.

Something Else

We continued our Burns Night celebrations here at the home by having entertainers 'Something Else' visit the home and perform. Sakura Cherry Tree Project

6,500 cherry trees are given to parks and schools across the UK. Resident Pam, who has lived at the Home for nearly 20 years was very keen to see the ceremony  and said “I can’t wait to see it bloom each year as Spring begins”.

The tree being planted at Camellia House is one of the 6,500 Japanese cherry trees – or Sakura in Japanese – given to the UK by Japan, and planted across the country in parks, gardens and schools to celebrate Japan’s relationship with the UK.

The project will be a legacy from the Japan-UK Season of Culture 2019-2020, which aims to showcase Japan’s multifaceted attractions in the UK.

Burns Night

Camellia House Care Home prepared a traditional Burns Night lunch to the tune of bagpipes and the fun continued well into the afternoon.

Staff and residents at the home were involved in a number of activities with resident , Bernard Hill giving the time-honoured address to the ‘Great chieftain O’ the pudding’ race’ – the haggis.

General Manager, Brighton Nyagomo, at Camellia House, thought it was a perfect occasion to celebrate a day  steeped in age-old tradition as well as getting in a spot of Scottish Music.

He said: “Burns Night celebrations are always a fantastic event at Camellia House Celebrations have been a little different this year but we still had a great time, it’s so important to continue these traditions.  Our residents enjoyed a hearty meal of Haggis with neeps and tatties all prepared by our stellar Chef, Dan Cobzaru”

Bernard, resident of Camellia House said: “I enjoyed reading the Address to a Haggis. It reminded me of all the Burns Night Celebrations I have enjoyed over the years”.

We had a very special birthday in the home this week, as one of our residents, Pam, turned 94! Pam has happily lived in the home for almost 20 years now which we think is incredible!

We had a wonderful time celebrating on the day, with staff pulling out all the stops to ensure Pam had a very special day. Happy Birthday Pam!
