Activities at Chester Court Care Home

We understand that the people we support have passions and interests that could be difficult to pursue after moving into a care home – but that doesn’t mean we don’t encourage them to try! Some hobbies can define a person, so our Activities Coordinator is dedicated to ensuring that everyone we support is able to do what makes them happy to the best of their abilities. Social events are organised with individual tastes in mind and with the idea that residents have the opportunity to try new and exciting things.

Our aim is to make sure that our residents feel they had something to look forward to each day. We have a varied life enrichment programme, both in the home and in the community, and we always ask if there is anything different that residents would like to do. Residents and families approach our Activities Coordinator and comment on how much they enjoy what we do, so that we can continue to develop our programme to the benefit of our residents.

Lauren Corbett

Activities Coordinator

Hi, my name is Lauren and I am the Activities Coordinator here at Chester Court.  I joined the team in December 2020 and bring a wealth of enthusiasm to the role. I have just graduated from university in July 2020 and have previously completed work experience at another Barchester home. During this work experience I discovered how meaningful and important activities are for residents and how they can help enhance resident’s lives. Therefore, I decided to become an activities coordinator myself as I feel this is such a rewarding role.

I love working with our Residents here at the home and getting to know them and their families so that I can deliver and support in meaningful activities, keeping them socially stimulated and active as part of our extensive life enrichment calendar. The lifestyle and continued community links are also important.

Life at Chester Court Care Home

Nutrition and Hydration Week

Chester Court has been celebrating Nutrition and Hydration Week with lots of yummy, wholesome food, thirst quenching beverages and some interesting activities along the way. Nutrition and Hydration Week aims to highlight, promote and celebrate improvements in the provision of nutrition and hydration locally, nationally and globally.

At Barchester, each resident’s specific dietary requirements, likes and dislikes are individually catered for at all our homes. Meals are prepared to each resident’s tastes and all staff understand the importance of good nutrition and hydration for all our residents and patients’ wellbeing.

St Patrick's Day

Residents celebrated all things Irish for St Patrick’s Day. The home was decorated with shamrocks and everyone dressed in green to mark the day. Residents marked the day by painting decorations to display including, shamrocks, rainbows and of course pots of gold! Residents also completed St Patricks Day themed word searches, listened to Irish music, participated in Guinness tasting and decorated cupcakes.

Shove Tuesday

The first day of March was busy as we marked not only St David’s Fay but also Pancake Day. Pancake Day or Shove Tuesday is the traditional feast day before the Lent on Ash Wednesday.

Our residents had a wonderful day, filled with pancake-inspired activities, they prepared homemade pancakes and decorated them with fresh fruit, berries, syrup and chocolate.

We watched some hilarious pancake races and some of our residents took part in our very own pancake flipping competition.

Crufts

Here at Chester Court we enjoyed watching Crufts, the international dog show held annually in the UK.  The dog show was initially set up in Victoria times by the late Charles Cruft, which has become an essential date in the calendar of any dog lover.  Throughout the days, our residents took part in a number of interesting activities from watching the show and participating in a quiz

Politics and Passion at Cliveden

We were treated to an amazing live virtual talk and a tour of Cliveden, hosted by the house and chapel guides from the National Trust Talks Service.

The volunteers kindly gave us a tour around the famous house taking an in-depth look at Cliveden’s many stories from its 350 year history, from devilish dukes to scandalous headlines and boundary-breaking garden designs to political notoriety.

Starting with the Duke of Buckingham who built the first house in 1666, our residents met the key owners who helped shape the house and its gardens including the Orkney, Sutherland and Astor families.

The talk was accompanied by an illustrated presentation which brought to life these individuals and showed how their influence at Cliveden still continues today.

Carpet bowls

Residents had a lovely afternoon playing games of carpet bowls. Gary our resident ambassador was very pleased when he won 3 games in a row! Carpet bowls is a great way to help improve fitness and coordination without even realising!
