Activities at Cubbington Mill Care Home

Every day we run different activities throughout our home. The activities are designed and adapted to each individuals personal needs. The activities are designed to mentally and physically stimulate the people we care for and also to enhance their life skills and feelings of purpose and self-worth. The activities encourage interaction on a one to one basis, in small groups, in large groups and some are designed for the whole home including staff to be involved in.

We are registered with the National Activity Providers Association (NAPA) which ensures we are able to achieve and continually progress to enhance the quality of life for those we support in the home. We provide entertainers such as singers, musicians, magicians, puppeteers, poets and dancers. We also have regular exercise classes and arts and craft classes. Relatives and visitors will be able to see what me make in these classes on display around the home. We have regular trips out on the mini bus to visit garden centres, enjoy high tea, visit the butterfly farm and spend the day at the zoo with a picnic. We encourage the local community, schools, colleges and relatives to come and join us for activities, tea and cake and to visit to share their skills as much as possible.

Staff from across the home are always willing to help and share their knowledge and skills across a whole range of activities we have had everything from carers preforming Bollywood style dancing to cooking classes from the chef. We feel activities are a vital part of the residents lives to ensure they are stimulated mentally and entertained.

World First Aid Day

Residents recently celebrated World First Aid Day with a talk from Alexandra Taylor, Community Advocate at St John Ambulance. Our sister home, Harper Fields, joined residents at Cubbington Mill via Microsoft Teams where residents from both homes leant various first aid topics. They even had a go at making and wearing a sling!

World Photography Day

For World Photography Day, Cubbington Mill joined professional photographer, Damian Bailey, for an exciting virtual themed talk. Damian guided residents through different photography techniques and compositions, providing his top tips for taking professional pictures.

Following the event, we were delighted to spend some time taking beautiful photos of staff and residents to enter in the  Bailey Barchester competition with the theme 'Light'. Residents were delighted to find out that they had won the photography competition for the Central region!

Resident, John, who studied photography himself suggested we edited our photographs into black and white so that the projection of artificial light onto our models was even more eye-catching. Activities Coordinator, Hannah, talked about the elements of photography which she had learnt about whilst studying Fine Art at university.

We all had a wonderful time during our photoshoot and we are happy to say we were impressed with our skills in putting all the tips and ideas learnt during the talk into practice.

Local PCSO Visit

Residents at Cubbington Mill have enjoyed a visit from local PCSO / WCO Ed and Anna, part of the Warwick Rural East SNT.

Each month the local Police Community Support Officers will visit residents at Cubbington Mill and spend time talking about news and events around Cubbington and surrounding areas. This also gives residents the opportunity to raise any concerns they may have within the local community and aims to make sure that residents feel like valued members of society, which is particularly important during the pandemic.

Before Covid the PCSO’s were regular visitors to Cubbington Mill and continued to keep in contact with the residents with social distanced visits to events such as resident, John’s 107th birthday party in June last year.

International Youth Day

The NCS team have been working hard on their Social Action Project which aims to make a positive difference to the local community. Throughout the week they have added beautiful flowers, painted furniture and made decorations for the homes outdoor space. This intergenerational project has been a fantastic way for residents and local young people to work together and create something special which will be enjoyed for years to come by visitors and residents of the home. The NCS team has had help from local businesses too, Pets N Plants donated flowers to use and Homebase Leamington Spa gave a generous 10% discount.

International Beer Day

You better beer-lieve that residents at Cubbington Mill were more than hoppy to raise a glass, and sample some top craft brews in celebration of International Beer Day.

The home set up a bar for a real pub experience and with the help of local brewery Warwickshire Beer Company a selection of local ales were available for residents to sample. Residents enjoyed beer tasting and a performance from local singer Thea Watson whilst they sampled the different brews.

World Chess Day

We marked World Chess Day in style with fun-filled chess-based activities. Some of our residents celebrated the day by playing chess and learning more about this strategic game. Many residents are keen chess players, so the opportunity to celebrate and play this wonderful game on World Chess Day has made it even more special.
