Activities at Derham House Care Home
We understand that the people we support have passions and interests that could be difficult to pursue after moving into a care home – but that doesn’t mean we don’t encourage them to try! Some hobbies can define a person, so our Activities Coordinators are dedicated to ensuring that everyone we support is able to do what makes them happy to the best of their abilities. Social events are organised with individual tastes in mind and with the idea that residents have the opportunity to try new and exciting things.
Kay Thompson
I have worked in the care sector for many years. I am fully trained in dementia awareness, and I have also trained as a dignity champion. I have been working here at Derham House since March 2019, and I am really enjoying my role here.

Life at Derham House Care Home
Euros 2020
We saw the start of the much awaited European championships; what better way to kick off that with a curry and a nice cold beer?
We decided it would be a gentleman’s afternoon, but quickly realised the ladies weren't too keen on the football, but liked the idea that we had beer and curry.
The curry looked and tasted amazing the residents really enjoyed it, with compliments to the chef.
Once lunch was finished, we sat down to watch the match and were surprised that all the ladies stayed to cheer on the Scots. Unfortunately, the match ended in defeat for the Tartan Army, but everyone still enjoyed their afternoon.
Royal Celebrations
We celebrated the Queen’s birthday with a garden party. We decorated the home with balloons and banners and had a sun shade erected for the occasion, as it was a lovely sunny day.
The lovely Carly Callaghan came to entertain the residents, singing songs from all eras, including 'Happy Birthday' and the National Anthem, which some of the residents decided to stand for how lovely.
The residents enjoyed tea and cakes, made by our chef, which always goes down well. Some enjoyed a cheeky gin & tonic or a glass of wine.
Garden Centre Trip
Residents were so happy to be able to finally go out and see some new surroundings; they had a lovely walk around looking at all the beautiful flowers and pottery.
We stopped for a cuppa and some lovely sponge cake; needless to say, they all polished off the cake.
One lucky resident had a surprise when her daughters surprised met her there, which brought a beautiful smile to her face, but the biggest smile was left for her granddaughter, who had not seen her nan for over a year. It was the best feeling ever, seeing them all smiling and laughing together.
Cheese & Wine Afternoon
We had a wine & cheese afternoon while listening to music from the '60s, as that’s what the residents asked for.
They sampled various cheeses from around the globe; one resident even tried a spicy cheese, which he really liked. Others, however, thought it was terrible. They then washed down those fine cheeses with wines from Italy, California and the UK.
Greek Independence Day
On the day, we decorated the cinema room with of images relating to Greece and, in the afternoon, we had a virtual tour of the Greek island. The residents have really enjoyed our virtual round the world trips, so we decided to do another one this time to celebrate Independence Day.
The tour took us from Athens to Mykonos to Halkidiki to the volcanic island of Santorini and the busy night life that it has to offer.
Whilst watching the, tour the residents tucked in to some stuffed peppers with feta cheese and olives with roasted tomatoes garlic and herb sauce.
After the tour ,we had some facts about Greece and independence from the Ottoman Empire.
Roll on the next tour!
