Activities at Drummond Grange Care Home
We understand that the people we support have passions and interests that could be difficult to pursue after moving into a care home – but that doesn’t mean we don’t encourage them to try! Some hobbies can define a person, so our Activities Coordinators are dedicated to ensuring that everyone we support is able to do what makes them happy to the best of their abilities. Social events are organised with individual tastes in mind and with the idea that residents have the opportunity to try new and exciting things.
Katie Nicolson
Katie Nicolson is our Head of activities here at Drummond since August 2023 beforehand she worked as an activity assistant in the home for two years. Before coming to Drummond Katie has worked in many care roles over the years and studied Psychology and Sociology at Queen Margaret’s University and was awarded a Degree of Bachelor of science in Psychology and Sociology at the start of 2022. Katie loves being part of the Activity department here at Drummond Grange and bringing new and exciting opportunities and experiences to the residents. When she’s not at work Katie is a local Girl Guide leader and youth leader for her churches youth group.

Life at Drummond Grange Care Home
Master Florist tutorial
Across our homes we had a fantastic time joining, Kathryn Delve, Master Florist, for a Valentine’s-inspired live virtual flower arranging demonstration. Kathryn shared brilliant and creative ways to decorate our tables with beautiful flowers that are sure to make your heart swoon!
Those participating in this virtual event put their skills to the test and followed along with some amazing creations of their own. Residents truly enjoyed the experience.
Burns Night 25th January 2024
We celebrated life of our Scottish bard with designing and weaving our own tartan, coming up with our own Scottish poetry, testing our Scottish knowledge with a quiz before settling in with a good old Scottish singalong with wee dram in hand. We had our friend and piper Struan come along to give us o few songs on the pipes before tucking into some yummy dinner prepared by head chef Chris Lewis starting with Haggis Bonbons with whiskey mayo then a choice of Haggis Neeps and Tatties or stovies and finishing with the Scottish classic Cranachan.
Squirrel day 19th January 2024
Always one to love a themed day when Head of Activities Katie found out it was international squirrel day we just had to celebrate. Turns out there is not to many squirrel based activities so we started the morning with painting watercolour squirrels in the forest then in the afternoon we challenged ourselves to a squirrel based quiz which we were shocked to find out the squirrels sweat from their paws and that there are 285 species of squirrels.
Making some new New Year Dreams and Wishes
We love supporting residents not only achieve their goal but achieve their dreams too! We regularly ask and update the resident’s dreams and wishes and put a real focus on supporting our residents to achieve them.
New Year Day Celebrations 1st January 2024
To bring in the new year in try Drummond grange style we held a big party to celebrate. To start the day each unit was challenges to come up with an outfit for one of the staff to wear containing something beginning with each letter in NEW YEAR. They were all encouraged to be as inventive and creative as possible leading to some very interesting outfits. We played silly games and finished the day with a singalong to well and truly start the new year of right!
Medical Detection Dogs
Across our services residents had a fantastic time during a special live virtual event, led by Emilia from Medical Detection Dogs. Emilia took us on a journey to discover how the organisation began training dogs to support people with complex health conditions, saving their lives on a daily basis.
Using their amazing sense of smell, these dogs can identify odour changes emitted prior an episode and alert the person to take preventative action.
We were introduced to the wonderful dogs and the science behind the sniff. It was a delightful experience for everyone, especially our canine-loving residents.
