Activities at Hickathrift House Care Home
We have two Activities Coordinators here at Hickathrift House. We have a wide range of activities within the home, including musical entertainment, arts & crafts, clubs for like-minded people, such as flower arranging and gardening, board games, baking (where the best bit is the eating afterwards!), and we celebrate special events throughout the year. We also have trips out on a regular basis using our own minibus, where we find out places of interest each person would like to visit.
It is important to us that each individual who we support can get as much from these activities as possible, so we try our best to arrange activities that reflect their interests and capabilities, and encourage them to participate in any way they can. We also encourage relatives to join in with activities and events as often as they can.
For the less mobile residents, we unique one-to-one session, such as simple chats over a cup of tea, reading or listening to music. Activities are some of the most important aspects of a care home, so it is essential that our team are dedicated to ensuring that residents are entertained, and that life at Hickathrift House is fun and active.
Kat Colangelo
Hello, my name is Kat and I am the Activities Lead here at Hickathrift House.
Since 2017 I have been working in the field of well-being and I am passionate and enthusiastic about enriching all our of residents' quality of life.
As the Activities Lead at Hickathrift House, my focus is learning about each of our resident's likes and dislikes and supporting them to remain receptive and active in addition to supporting them to engage with our local community friends.
I organise activities to stimulate the mind, body and soul in an enjoyable, comfortable way. My aim is to diversify and increase activities ensuring that there is something for everyone - from Wine and Cheese events, excursions on our home Mini Bus as well as individual bespoke person-centered activities.

Life at Hickathrift House Care Home
70th Anniversary Celebrations
We were honoured to share in a celebration with two of our residents who have been married for 70 years – it was a very emotional day and beautiful to see the closeness they still share. Happy 70th Anniversary, Alf & Jean!
Happy Easter
A huge thank you to the kind donations of Easter eggs for residents from Asda and Morrison’s in Wisbech. All the residents were thrilled to receive theirs. The chocolate bunnies were awarded to the Easter bonnet competition winners.
Braving the Cold
Staff and residents at Hickathrift House have been supporting Jamie Hall, who is Head of Maintenance at the home, as he braved the cold in aid of homeless veterans to take part in Tommy’s Sleep Out.
A veteran himself, Jamie lives in Wisbech and joined Hickathrift House in March 2018 after retiring from the Royal Engineers. He is currently an Army Reservist
So far Jamie, nicknamed 'Nobby, has raised £2,340.00 with some funds still to collect. His original target was £150. People can still donate through Facebook—Nobby’s fundraiser for Royal British Legion Industries (RBLI)—or by contacting the home.
We are all so proud of Jamie; he is an absolute superstar. Everyone is very happy to support this fantastic cause, which is so close to Jamie’s heart.
St David's Day
Residents had a celebration in honour of St David, the patron saint of Wales on 1st March. The home was filled with beautiful daffodils and decorated with the welsh flag.
To mark the day, Welsh people around the world wear one or both of Wales's national emblems: a daffodil and a leek. Special concerts and parades are also held in St David's honour, although this year celebration's will be different because of coronavirus restrictions.
Patron saints are chosen to be special protectors or guardians over all areas of life.
Real Bread Week
Residents at Hickathrift took part in Real Bread Week 2021 and loved making their ownrolls and loaves – they tasted delicious!
Bread Week is the annual, international celebration of supporting your local, independent real bread bakery and baking your own.
Feeling Floral
You will normally spot Betty with knitting needles in her hands, but for a change she has been doing some beautiful embroidery.
