Activities at Kernow House Care Home
Our Activities Coordinators organise varied and regular events. The activities that take place depend on what our residents tell us they are interested in and the feedback we get from their families. We currently have pop-up cafes where we socialise and maybe visit the hairdresser. We have regular live music events, a storyteller and visits from animals and we are often joined by families or friends during our social activities where they are always most welcome.
Living in Cornwall the surrounding countryside offers many beauty spots and we often have trips out to wherever our residents would like to go. At other times a walk to nearby shops or cafes is what we enjoy.
Louise is our hairdresser and she is with us twice a week. Louise also supports us during our weekly Namaste sessions where she offers hand massages in a relaxing environment. Every Thursday afternoon we have a time of worship supported by our local community. Our ice cream van, Kernow Kones, and our mobile pub, Kernow Keg, also make a weekly appearance. We have monthly clubs, when we play bingo or watch a film in our pop-up cinema. Residents on all units are invited to take part in a monthly Resident’s Meeting and they tell us what they would like.
Apart from these regular events, we also celebrate special occasions and often have musical entertainers to visit but we also make our own fun. All staff take part in fancy dress or charity events that we support and often what we do evolves through interaction between residents and care or activity staff. All this makes Kernow House a vibrant place to be where things happen both as group activities as well as on an individual level.

Life at Kernow House Care Home
101 Years Young
Mary enjoyed her 101st birthday right here at Kernow House. She celebrated by having her hair done at the hairdressing salon during the morning. Mary’s daughter visited from America and a few other family members stopped by a bit later. In the afternoon, we had a party with Brian Burley entertaining and singing lots of well-known songs. We sang, danced and generally enjoyed the party, which ended with a birthday tea that included snacks and a birthday cake.
Open Day
We held an Open Day and invited healthcare professionals to Kernow House on Friday 27th January. We showcased Kernow House with displays of what we do here, the care we deliver, the food we serve and the activities we offer. Our kitchen team made cream teas for us with scones served the Cornish way – jam first and then clotted cream, of course. We also had soft option cream teas available. Kathy, our aroma therapist, gave taster hand massages in a specially set up booth.
Our next Open Day will be on Friday 16th June 2017.
Burns Night
We celebrated Burns Night at Kernow House with a gathering in the afternoon. Last week, we made bunting from tartan paper and we also made small bunches of purple heather tied with red ribbon. During our celebration, we listened to Scottish pipes and drums playing music everyone loved. We then read some poems by Burns with Scottish residents sharing good advice on how to pronounce some of the words.
Happy Christmas
Happy Christmas to everyone. Here is a picture of our traditional fancy dress day at Kernow House. This year, our theme was chosen by a resident and they chose the style of 'nativity'. We shall be carol singing around the home and enjoying the festivities.
Christmas Jumper Day
We had our Christmas Jumper day on 13th December. It was a busy day with our regular pop-up cafe during the morning. We made Christmas decorations with willow wreathes, fresh holly and pine from the garden, and oranges and apples we had previously dried.
In the afternoon, we had a lot of fun with Ann Stott, who is a singing teacher and visits us every month. We sang lots of Christmas songs and rang our jingle bells.
In the evening, we had our Carols Around The Tree service with the local Methodist community, who support us each week during the year. We gathered lots of residents and staff on the concourse and, with the Methodists, we sang Christmas carols, listened to poems, and enjoyed bible readings and stories that were told with large pictures of the Nativity. It was all very Christmassy and left us full of Christmas cheer, especially after having mince pies and mulled wine.
Christmas Preparations
We have been making Christmas cakes and decorations with willow, dried fruit and leaves, as well as holly donated by staff and prepared during our pop-up cafes. We have had a lot of fun drinking tea and coffee and listening to Christmas music whilst socialising and being very creative.
