Activities at Kirkburn Court Care Home

Here at Kirkburn Court, we aim to facilitate a personalised programme of meaningful activities, which are designed to promote independence, social stimulation and cognitive function. We strive to create a comfortable and safe environment where fun, creativity and individuality are encouraged. We feel it is important for us and residents to place value on yesterday, today and tomorrow – which is why we invest heavily in getting to know residents and learning their life history.

Our inclusive, yet respectful ethos is reflected in the wide range of activities we offer – ranging from larger structured group activities to one-to-one sessions. Our monthly activity programmes are extremely varied, but some of the activities you may expect to find include concerts, crafts, games, exercise sessions, reminiscing and outings. We also have a strong relationship with the local community and often invite external guests into the home, including performers, schools, and choirs.

Claire Burden

Activities Coordinator

I began my career with Barchester in December 2017. Having worked within the teaching profession for the preceding 8 years, I feel that I bring a range of transferable skills to the activities team.

I strongly believe that the provision of activities is about so much more than just structured, planned events – capturing and celebrating the little moments in daily life, such as enjoying a chat and a cup of tea together, are equally as important.

Activities, no matter how big or small, should be at the heart of every home and that individuality should be celebrated. In addition, I feel that activities should take a person-centred approach, which is why I enjoy spending time with the residents and learning about their preferences and their history.

My own interests include football, politics, crafting and drinking tea, and I enjoy nothing better than engaging with residents on these topics! I aim to bring energy, a friendly smile and a willing ear to the home each day.

Activities and Events Partnerships

As part of our bespoke life-enrichment programmes, we host a number of live virtual events in the home on a regular basis through a number of partnerships with places of interest and world class performance companies

Life at Kirkburn Court Care Home

Long Service Awards

During January, one of our nurses, Diane, celebrated 10 years of working at Kirkburn Court.

She was presented with flowers, a gift voucher and a commemorative pin by our manager, David, to mark the occasion.

He thanked Diane for her continued commitment, hard work and dedication. A few drinks and nibbles were enjoyed to celebrate the occasion.

Australia Day

G'day mate!

During January, we went to a land down under and celebrated Australia Day.

Our residents and staff took part in our hotly contested guess the name of the kangaroo competition. Well done to Tina, who was the winner!

We also tried our hand at some Australian-themed quizzes and puzzles. We have had a bonza time!

Burn's Night!

We have had a great time during January celebrating Robbie Burns Day.

A huge thanks to our piper, Sinclair, for piping in our haggis and for playing a few tunes for us. We were also treated to a special address to the haggis by Diane and Phyllis - who did a great job!

Our musical entertainment came in the form of Kirkburn regular, Calum McDonald. As always, we had a brilliant time boogieing the afternoon away. Some great singing and dancing from residents and staff.
It is now time to tidy the tartan away for another year!

International Hug Day

We have recently celebrated International Hug Day. The main item on the agenda was to have as many hugs as possible! Our hug-ometer was in overdrive!

We also focussed on the spirit of kindness and have been sharing some sweet treats with everyone. It has been a lovely, heart-warming time for the Kirkburn family.

A wee Christmas dram

Some of our ladies and gents enjoyed a wee trip out to our local Weatherspoon’s for some Christmas drams and cocktails.

The weather was quite chilly outside so we were glad of a drink to warm us up! There were lots of games, fun and banter around the table – and there may have even been a wee sing song too! It was lovely to see some other staff members and volunteers joining us too. A great time was had by all.

Bus outings for Christmas lunch

Both of our units have enjoyed trips out for their Christmas Lunch during December. Memory Lane went to Happy Plant in Mintlaw and enjoyed a delicious Christmas Lunch before browsing the range of amazing Christmas decorations. One of our favourites was the singing penguins – not something you usually expect to see!

Our Buchan Neuk residents headed to the Mission Café in Peterhead. We enjoyed a warm welcome along with a lovely 3 course lunch. We followed this with a run around the town to have a look at all the lovely Christmas lights. A couple of fantastic outings!
