Activities at Lawton Rise Care Home

Activities are the cornerstone of a wholesome home experience and our Activities Coordinators are always putting their creative minds to the test by organising new and exciting social events for residents to partake in. Of course, we take into account the likes and dislikes of those we support, so if someone doesn’t feel like trying something new, there will always be something on offer to reflect their personal interests. For the people who may just prefer some peace and quiet instead, we also offer one-to-one time that can be enjoyed with a nice cup of coffee or just a simple chat – whatever they desire.

Life at Lawton Rise Care Home

Home raises funds for local charity

Staff and residents  at Lawton Rise in Goldenhill raised £389.30 in a socially-distanced fundraising morning whereby they held a bake sale, sold self-care packages and a “sponge toss at the boss” in order to raise money for their resident fund as part of Dementia Action Week. The aim of Dementia Action Week (20 - 26 May 2019) is to unite people, workplaces, schools and communities to take action and improve the lives of people living with dementia. Kidsgrove Tesco and Festival Park Morrisons also donated items for the home to sell off as self-care packages.  Frankie Potts, Activity Coordinator at Lawton Rise Care Home, said: “Planning this fundraiser has been a huge amount of fun and everyone at the home has been behind us all the way. It’s for such an important cause. I’m very glad to be able to do my bit to raise further awareness and money for the residents’ garden.”

Cinco de Mayo celebrations

Residents at Lawton Rise went loco celebrating Cinco de Mayo which takes place on 5th May every year. Cinco de Mayo is a national day which celebrates freedom and liberty in Mexico. It marks the date in 1862 when President Benito Juarez sent troops to face the invading French army who were marching towards Mexico City.

The day is hugely important in Mexico and is celebrated with parades, battle re-enactments, fireworks and parties around the country. Residents enjoyed a brilliant Mexican party with Mariachi music and a piñata, as well as buffet of traditional Mexican food including Nachos and Churros. Jen, General Manager, said “We celebrate all cultures and religions and we try to mark as many cultural events as possible.  Cinco de Mayo is a fantastic celebration and a great excuse for a party.  We all had so much fun decorating the home with Mexican flags and pinatas and dancing to the Mariachi music”

Operation Garden Glow Up

Spring has sprung and so have we… sprung into action that is! Recently, we have noticed glimmers of summer sunshine, which has inspired us to give our garden a make-over.

We have begun some flower-potting sessions and are making more plans to create a special outdoor space for our residents. In addition, we would love to put in place a vegetable patch, whereby our green-fingered residents can grow their own fruit and vegetables.

Our residents have made the most of the sunshine, and gardening is such a great activity, as it not only uses sensory skills but provides a sense of accomplishment and promotes group socialisation. We are making 'Operation Garden Glow Up' a weekly activity!

Welcoming Families Back

For residents at Lawton Rise, the long awaited reunion with one family member has become a reality, as one single named visitor is now allowed to visit each resident in their bedroom. There has been much anticipation of this moment by families and residents alike. Residents and their relatives enjoyed getting together and catching up face to face.

St Patrick's Day

Residents and staff at Lawton Rise in Goldenhill celebrated all things Irish for St Patrick’s Day this week. The home was decorated with shamrocks and everyone got dressed up in green to mark the day.

Held on March 17th, Saint Patrick's Day actually observes the death of St Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, but the day has come to be a huge celebration of Irish heritage and culture.

Staff and residents at the home marked the day by making shamrock decorations, listening to Irish folk music and completing St Patrick-themed puzzles. Chefs Emma, Heather, Jade and Sara prepared a fantastic spread with Liver & Onions or Pork Loin Chop with Dauphinoise potatoes, all washed down with Guinness or an Irish whiskey.

Mother's Day

Residents at Barchester Healthcare’s Lawton Rise care home, in Goldenhill, celebrated Mother’s Day with a flower arranging workshop and afternoon tea. The home was beautifully decorated with fresh flowers and balloons for the occasion.

Staff at Lawton Rise arranged for masses of fresh flowers to be delivered in order to deliver a luxury flower arranging workshop whereby residents were able to select and customise their own bouquet. Chefs at the home, Emma, Heather, Jade and Sara prepared a special menu of Roast Chicken & Stuffing dinner or Stewed Mince & Dumpling to mark the day, later accompanied with an afternoon tea which included plenty of cupcakes and finger sandwiches.

General Manager, Jennifer said: “We’ve all had a really lovely day. Although Mother’s Day has had to be a bit different this year, we have made good use of our visiting suite to make sure lots of our residents had a visit with their loved ones.”
