What our families say on carehome.co.uk
"Barchester Lochduhar Care Home is a really nice place for your loved one to live. Staff are caring and look after the residents well. Staff are very approachable if you have questions/queries regarding loved ones. Residents are kept clean and tidy. Lots of varied activities for residents and can be adapted to suit residents capabilities. Also cater for varied dietary needs. This is the second family member in here and if I had to choose again for a loved one, this would be my first choice if elderly mentally infirm unit was needed."

"Generally speaking, I am very satisfied with the care and support my mother receives in Lochduhar Care Home. I am particularly satisfied with the care she has received during the Corona Virus pandemic - no cases of the virus inside the care home so far. It is difficult to assess inside the care home at the moment as I have not been inside since March 2020. Communication has been good. I am delighted with the outside visits - the staff work hard."

"The staff at Lochduhar are first class. They work to engage residents in enjoying life. The activities coordinator had put in so much effort in to help my mother partake in activities, thank you. A well-managed home."

"Overall, satisfactory care but insufficient staff to provide care to all the individual needs. Staff overworked. Food poor quality at times. Staff very pleasant and eager to do the best they can."

"This is a home from home, with excellent nursing care. The staff are amazing, so kind, caring, happy and entertaining. They can't do enough for the residents, and family and friends are also treated with kindness and friendship. No matter what, nothing seems to be a bother to any member of staff to see to the needs of residents, even if it's only to give them a bit of company or sing a song with them. My mother couldn't have spent her last ten months in a better place. Lochduhar itself has a lovely homely atmosphere, very clean and happy staff who are very welcoming."

"My mum went into Lochduhar about 3 months ago. This is one of the best care homes in the area after going round a lot before her going in. Very glad we made this choice. Room is very comfortable. Staff very good, friendly, caring and some entertaining. Staff are very approachable to talk to and understanding. Activities co-ordinators put on a wide range of activities for the residents which they can take part in if they want. Would definitely recommend lochduhar as a care home."

"We as a family were very apprehensive when we had to admit mum into Lochduhar Care Home in June 2017 but were soon put at ease with how well the staff made mum feel, comfortable and safe, (she could get quite agitated prior to her admission) however we are very pleased with her level of care and at how she has settled into the care home itself. She still has the 'odd moment' now and again but in general, we always find her to be in good spirits and always seems to be happy with her surrounding."

"My mother has been in this care home since 2015 and she has received the best of care. I have total peace of mind knowing that my mum is in safe hands and the care staff see to her needs with sensitivity and compassion. She is unable to communicate properly which makes things quite difficult for the carers. They make sure that she gets the nutrition she needs as she is very reluctant to eat a proper meal. All in all, I couldn't ask for a better home for my mother."

"I have visited my friend once a week for almost 2 years. The staff are welcoming, the residents are well dressed and well cared for. The bedrooms are attractive and have personal items from home to help them settle in. There is a lot of entertainment through the year and everyone (residents and visitors) are welcome to attend. I have not had a meal there but the menus look good. The staff and support staff work hard and are always cheerful when I have visited."

"A very clean home with excellent staff, good meals and some activities. The only thing is it could use some more activity staff, especially at the weekends, as the two they have can't include everyone in the activities at one time. They do an excellent job but there are too many residents for two members of staff. I consider it to be the best home in Dumfries."

"This care home is, without a doubt, the best in the area. All others were checked out by myself, some are poor, the rest is a poor second to Lochduhar. Our family are very satisfied with the care given to our mother. I visit every day so my comments are based on knowledge gained daily over the last 19 months. The recent refurbishment has brought the fabric of the home up to date, a great job has been done, it is beautiful."

"Attentive and friendly staff. Recent refurbishment to general areas making the home very attractive to both visitors and residents. Unfortunately, the refurb did not include residents personal rooms, which could do with some redecoration. Pleasing amount of activities related to outside of the home, with visits to the local football club and snooker hall available. A varied menu is available at mealtimes with an alternative option made if main meals are unsuitable for residents."

"Although my father was a resident for only a short time, he settled in quickly and was enjoying the activities, staff, and care, and also his surroundings. The home has a warm and welcoming feel with staff smiling and chatty, with excellent care. Nothing is too much trouble and all staff very responsive to both my father and ourselves. It is just such a shame he wasn't there longer to fully enjoy it. The end of life care he received was exemplary. We cannot thank Lochduhar enough for making such a sad time more bearable."

"My uncle is a resident at Lochduhar, and since he began living there two years ago, he has had regular visitors including my mum (his sister) who visited daily. When the COVID-19 situation happened, understandably, visiting was suspended. However, thanks to the incredible effort and dedication of the team at Lochduhar, we have been able to have weekly (sometimes more) Skype communication with my uncle as well as regular photographs of him enjoying the sunshine and activities. I don't think we can ever express how grateful we have been as a family to be able to have this communication, and it has been incredible to see how upbeat and positive the staff are during these calls. This positivity has ensured that my uncle who lives with dementia remains calm, safe, happy and secure. For us, as a family, this has been invaluable. Lochduhar you have been a shining example of core person-centred care and compassion during these uncertain times. Thank you, and keep up the excellent work."

"The staff at Lochduhar have worked very hard to keep us informed of all changes taking place during the Covid crisis. As well as having updates on their website, they have been sending out letters to relatives telling us about any changes and what staff have been doing to help residents through the crisis and keeping them occupied socially. Staff have also telephoned to discuss care-plans, any changes in my mother-in-law's condition, and also to let us know when she was needing toiletries etc. We have also been able to discuss how my mother-in-law would be able to cope with visiting when social distancing was introduced, and I felt that the members of staff really know my mother-in-law, and her issues."

"For the first time in 17-weeks, I was able to visit my sister outside, social distancing, in the marquee erected adjacent to the care home. I was welcomed by a lovely member of staff who detailed all requirements and then escorted me around the building. My sister was brought out in her wheelchair by another familiar member of staff, and we have 1/2 hour to chat. Everything was done safely, and it was a lovely experience. I know my sister is well looked after and I can relax in this knowledge."

I'd like to say thank you to all the staff for everything they are doing."

"My mum has been a resident of Lochduhar for 12 months. The staff here made this transition from home to care home the best it could possibly be, for all of us as a family, but particularly for my dad who was Mum's sole caregiver for 15 years. It has been a difficult time for Mum; however, the staff at Lochduhar make him (and us) so welcome and treat us all like extended family. Mum is more settled, and I feel has actually improved, thanks to every member of the team."

"The month began with my husband recovering from a nasty chest infection - during which he had lost a reasonable amount of weight. He was weighed and dieticians visited. He has meal supplements and all is progressing. On February 14th we were honoured along with other couples and residents to a beautiful restaurant menu meal. The food, table dressing and ambience was excellent and memories of happiness were made. As I was unable to come for the Valentine's lunch owing to a family friend's funeral, my husband and I were dined in the late afternoon and then followed the love song concert."

"Extraordinary care and kindness at a most difficult time for our family. Genuine interest in my mother-in-law's personal story/likes and dislikes. Communication excellent from the care team with attention to detail and true professionalism. We only planned for her to stay temporarily, but we couldn't leave in the end. They were all wonderful. Heartfelt thanks."

"I have found everyone at Lochduhar Care Home to be kind, genuine, selfless and supportive. It is tough adjusting to a parent in care let alone with dementia. Today the home took a group to lunch on the river. Fun in the sun. The first time Mum, Dad and I have been out together since December 2022. Thank you for giving us happy times in a challenging period of our lives."

"From day one, my mum has been treated superbly by all at Barchester Lochduhar Care Home. Staff are extremely welcoming and nothing is any trouble. Communication is first-class and, from my perspective, I have had complete peace of mind since my mum began to live here. Quite clearly staff selection is very good and quite clearly the home is managed superbly with a genuine passion for residents and their families' well-being. First-class services and can't thank you enough!"

"My mum has been in Barchester Lochduhar Care Home now for just over two years. The staff are fantastic with her, with a family feel whilst visiting. She loves a hug and I know she gets plenty when I am not there. They have some great activities for them, Mum loves a wee sing song and a wee dance and great to see her enjoying the music with other residents."

"For anyone looking for a care home for their loved ones I highly recommend Barchester Lochduhar Care Home in Dumfries as I have found the care my brother receives is absolutely wonderful. I couldn't have asked for any better, the staff are so understanding of his daily needs and are so patient with him. When I visit or call the staff are always there to let me know how he is, they take the time to talk to me, anything that he needs they always let me know or if he is unwell I am kept fully informed. I would definitely give Lochduhar ten stars as they thoroughly deserve it."

"My brother has lived in Lochduhar for over four years. During this time I have got to know the staff and their routine. They all work very hard in every area, but always have time to answer any queries I might have. My brother always smiles at the staff and seems very happy in their company and that is very reassuring. I visit every day and always feel welcome by everyone in Lochduhar."

"Mum has only been in Lochduhar for a month, and already I see a positive change in her. She had been hospitalised for six months prior to the placement. Although she is bed-bound, it is so good to see her smiling and laughing once more. The care and support from the staff have been outstanding. My sincere thanks for making this a real home from home."

"Lochduhar Care Home was recommended to us when my mother-in-law could no longer cope at home alone. Having no previous experience of the procedure and being quite desperate, communication was quick and everything explained so nothing felt complicated. Very efficient and happy to help. The place itself is lovely and clean and plenty of activities going on to suit everyone’s needs. Staff are excellent, I’m well informed and feel she’s well looked after."

"Our mum moved to Lochduhar Care Home earlier this year having been with a different care provider for the preceding 10 months. In a matter of months, our mums quality of life, wellbeing and disposition have been completely transformed and this is down to the care, attention to detail and excellent nursing care she has received. In turn, this has had a positive effect on us her family and we are completely at peace in the knowledge she is experiencing first-rate personalised care and also confident that we would be notified should there be any cause for concern. The staff always make us feel like family and not an imposition on them, and for that, we are very appreciative. In summary, we could not commend the home, surroundings, and the staff highly enough and thank them unreservedly."

"My grandparent moved into Barchester Lochduhar Care Home in October 2021. We could not have asked for a smoother transition. The staff were excellent and made us feel at ease after having a traumatic experience at a previous care home. The staff made moving in day a lovely morning by showing attention and just making the whole experience as easy and relaxing as they could. We had no concerns whatsoever about leaving my grandparent in the safe hands of the carers. Over the last 7-months, my grandparent has flourished and have got some spark back, such as getting involved in activities, proper nutritional food, personal care and all in all, just superb care. We can’t fault anything. If I was to mention one thing but to be seen as constructive criticism, we found that the care plan had been done without family involvement and on me asking about this I was given to read, was some inaccurate information (which has since been removed) but possibly family involvement prior to resident moving in would help."

"Mum moved to Barchester Lochduhar Care Home 3 months ago from another care home in the area. It has been an immensely positive move for her, and therefore also for my father. Her whole demeanour has improved, as have her mobility and communication. Staff actively engage with her and with the family. They seek out activities that could interest her. We cannot believe how quickly these improvements have come about. This is a place where she can live with Alzheimer's, not suffer from it. Many thanks to all staff."
