Activities at Overslade House Care Home

Today we held a charity coffee morning and bake sale at Overslade House to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Having a coffee morning is the perfect chance to catch up over a cuppa and a slice of something delicious for a great cause.

Head chef, Jo baked lots of lovely cakes and cream filled scones for all to enjoy and our visiting guests to buy. Hosted by our activities lead; Julie, the stall saw many visitors and we were very glad to be able to do our little bit to raise awareness for Macmillan, and raise money for the charity.

Residents at Overslade House care home in Rugby, run by Barchester Healthcare, are celebrating Housekeeping Week, which takes place from September 12-18. Our residents wanted to thank all the wonderful housekeeping staff at the home, whose hard work and dedication make a real difference to the lives of those living there.

Housekeeping Week is an annual event held every year during the second week in September. The week is dedicated to recognising the efforts of hardworking housekeeping staff around the world.

The Victorian Age, which spanned from 1837 to 1901, saw great changes in technology, industrialisation, and population growth. Residents and staff reminisced about how housekeeping has changed during their lifetime, residents talked about when they first got domestic appliances such as washing machines and vacuum cleaners, and how their lives were changed by advances in technology over the years.

Our Housekeeping team were treated to personal pamper gifts consisting of room diffusers, bath bombs, scented candles and Aloe Vera Cream for those hardworking hands and our residents were quick to give thanks and help the team by assisting our housekeepers with their daily cleaning schedule.

Violetta Baesu, General Manager said: “It is so wonderful to be able to celebrate housekeeping week and thank our fantastic staff for all that they do with a gift, they were thrilled that their efforts and hard work were recognised and appreciated.

On leaving Rugby High School and joining the activities team here at Overslade House, we said ‘Goodbye and Good Luck’ to the much-loved Denisa Manolia as she starts her university life in London studying Needlework and Fashion design.

Staff and residents at the home sent Denisa off in style before taking a trip out for lunch at The George, Rugby in Bilton village, Rugby. It was a happy day tinged with a little bit of sadness with plenty of laughs and jokes as they headed to the pub!

The George were very accommodating, the service was excellent and the food delicious. We had a wonderful time saying a fond farewell to Denisa who’s been a great support to our activities team and residents.

Everybody at Overslade House will miss her dearly, especially our resident Barbara Jones who she played cards with, Julie our new Activities Coordinator Lead has now had to learn a few card games but Barbara is a tough cookie to beat!

We look forward to seeing Denisa again on her university breaks, she’ll always have a place in our hearts here at Overslade House… and we have high hopes to see her future designs on the catwalks of the world.

Well there was certainly patriotism, hope and glory this afternoon at Overslade House especially with our residents Anne and John. A wonderful afternoon had by all joining the English National Ballet’s Philharmonic Orchestra, led by Music Director Gavin Sutherland, to celebrate Last Night of the Proms. Members of the orchestra took us on a magical, musical journey.

The English National Ballet Philharmonic is made up of many of the country’s top musicians, and boasts considerable experience in all forms of music-making. The insights and anecdotes into what it takes to conduct an orchestra for a world-class ballet company, was very interesting and was a special concert for Barchester Care Homes.

'Mocktails and Music' for our Caribbean themed fete on Bank Holiday Monday. We celebrated National Beach Day and the Notting Hill Carnival.

Rugby produced a chilly day but with various mocktails and a 'live' performance from our new Activities Lead "Julie" the day heated up nicely!

Our residents managed to get sand between their toes and a song in their hearts. It was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon with games galore. Fun was had catching the fish on our Magic Table and for a little while we were transported to our memories of the seaside. The sun may not have been shining but our faces were aglow.

Our beautiful resident Margaret turned 89 on the 25th August, we wished her many happy returns with one of her favourites; a super-sized fresh cream Victoria sponge topped with strawberry and kiwi slices.
