Activities at Queens Manor Care Home

We understand that the people we support have passions and interests that could be difficult to pursue after moving into a care home – but that doesn’t mean we don’t encourage them to try! Some hobbies can define a person, so our Activities Coordinators are dedicated to ensuring that everyone we support is able to do what makes them happy to the best of their abilities. Social events are organised with individual tastes in mind and with the idea that residents have the opportunity to try new and exciting things.

Shannon Cullen

Senior Head of Lifestyle

Hi, my name is Shannon and I am Head of Lifestyle and Enrichment here at Queens Manor. I have come to Queens Manor with 6 years of experience in the planning, activities and events sector.

I ensure that myself and the team get to  know each resident's preferences so that we can deliver a person-centred programme of events and activities within the home -  Including activities that positively impact physical, emotional and mental wellbeing. I strongly believe that creating great moments and memories for our residents and embracing their individuality with tailor made activities is the way forward.

In an era of developing technologies, we are using new ways of reaching out to family and friends - though Zoom, Skype and Facebook Portal. We hope that our residents never feel alone or too far away from their loved ones this way.   Each day I like to ensure that our residents enjoy themselves in a calm, stimulating and fun environment, whilst creating bonds with each other and staff.

My First Christmas In My New Home

Lots of our lovely residents are spending their first Christmas in their new home here at Queens Manor this year.

All at Queens Manor have gone above and beyond to make sure the run up to Christmas has been magical and exciting and tomorrow will be no different. With festive food, good cheer, warmth, love and support our Christmas Day will be one to remember.

One of our residents has marked the occasion with a beautiful custom made bauble to decorate the tree.

Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy New Year from all of us at Queens Manor x

Queens Manor Christmas Fete Dazzles

Everybody at Queens Manor's Christmas fete was treated to entertainment including a tombola, a raffle, lots of games and a variety of different stalls selling Christmas treats and local produce, provided by lots of groups throughout the community.

Boasting glisteing décor and sparkling Christmas trees throughout the home, we were a welcome and festive environment for the community and it was wonderful to see different generations laughing together and sharing the day. Visitors enjoyed plenty of refreshments, such as minced pies and mulled wine all prepared by Queens Manor’s kitchen team.

Can't wait for next years!

A Night at the Opera

Theatre outings are such an enjoyable part of our resident’s lives so we were excited to see that the Festival Theatre in Edinburgh were showing a dementia friendly version of TOSCA, an opera by Puccini

Gillian, Queens Manor’s wonderful concierge, accompanied some of our residents on the night. The journey there was made magical with views across a Christmas lit Edinburgh and after such a stirring experience at the opera, the journey back was filled with nostalgic chatter and memories of all things theatrical. An extra sprinkle of sparkle was added with front row seats next to the orchestra, which really did make the whole evening even more special.

These are such special times for our residents and events like this are so important, we’re really thankful for places organising dementia friendly events and we cannot wait for our next trip.

Hermit the Tortoise Pays us a Rare Visit

Queens Manor are lucky enough to get regular visits from Harry & Angela and their gang of Therapets but we're not usually graced with the presence of, Hermit-by-name-hermit-by-nature, Hermit the tortoise! This week our residents were thrilled to see this adorable little reptile make a rare appearance.

Tortoise’s (depending on their personality!) love to be loved and when Hermit came to visit, he was definitely in an affectionate mood. At 10 years old, hermit is a youngster and we all enjoyed holding him and stroking his head. We hope he’s in the mood to come back for another visit very soon.

Parsley The Therapet Cat Comes To Visit

We know that having animals can have a calming effect on residents, many of whom owned pets in their life and shared great companionship.

Harry comes in every weekend with his Therapets and our residents love to see them and a have a cuddle and play.

As well as Parsley the cat, pictured here saying hello to the residents, Harry brings Malcolm the long-haired dachshund and his other sibling kitten, Basil.

Halloween Party

Queens Manor became a den of ghoulish activity last week for Halloween! Residents, staff and guests all enjoyed face paints, parties, games and music and we were thrilled with a visit from our little friends at Flying Colours Nursery, they showed us how bobbin' apples is really done!
