Activities at Red Oaks Care Home
We believe in making a difference to the lives of people living here with us and ensure that we provide a lifestyle full of choice and stimulation that is centred around each resident here at Red Oaks. This includes a whole host of varied activities, together with regular trips out around the region, taking full advantage of the home’s minibus. Our aim is to enable each person we support to continue to do the things they enjoy for as long as they possibly can.
Sue McHoy
My role as activity coordinator at Red Oaks is ensuring that all residents have a full and varied activity program. Using our getting to know me books and knowing our residents backgrounds develop our activity program. Having lived in Henfield for the past 10 years I enjoy assisting residents maintaining and forming new the community connections.
I am passionate about my role, the part is having fun and making people smile.

Life at Red Oaks Care Home
Festival of Gardens & Arts
The Henfield Festival of Gardens & Arts Weekend has been running for the past 20 years. Red Oaks has played a major part in the weekend for the past 15 years, as we have one of the largest Gardens in Henfield. Over the course of the weekend, we had many bands and orchestras playing in our grounds, and craft people were displaying their talents in Red Oak's grounds. All money raised over this year is going to Barchester's Charitable Foundation. Over the weekend, we had over 1,000 visitors to our garden.
International Nurses Day
We hosted a party for our nursing team to celebrate International Nurses Day, where we said thank our nurses and care staff, who make a real difference to the lives of those we support.
St David's Day
Everyone at Red Oaks was in high spirits as we celebrated the national day of Wales, with residents cooking traditional Welsh cakes and a visit from the local PCSO.
The Chanctonbury Challenge
Groups from Upper Beeding, Steyning, Henfield, Partridge Green and St Peter's Primary Schools visited Red Oaks as part of the Chanctonbury Challenge.
This was part three of the challenge, an annual locality project created by teachers to encourage children to work together in a range of activities that will extend opportunities for creative thinking.
The children found out about the residents lives and looked at special items they had brought in, which included photographs, ornaments and medals.
After lots of discussion, questions and looking through booklets all about the residents, the afternoon culminated in the children producing a PowerPoint presentation on the computers about the life of each resident.
Breaking Down Barriers
Staff and residents at Red Oaks were delighted to be visited by members of The Henfield Shed and together made a host of bird boxes for our garden.
The Henfield Shed drew up the designs and all residents were excited to be assisted by their team to put the boxes together using a variety of hammers and drills.
Residents commented that it was great to feel the power of the drill, and the finished bird boxes looked fantastic.
Burns Night Capers
Red Oaks prepared a traditional Burns Night Supper to the tune of bagpipes, and capers continued well into the wee small hours!
Staff and residents at the home were involved in a number of activities, including cooking and tasting haggis, reading Robert Burns' poetry, listening to Scottish music and giving the time-honoured address to the ‘Great Chieftain o’ the pudding’ race’ – the haggis.
