What our families say on carehome.co.uk

"I am impressed with Red Oaks. As the only relative living in the USA, I needed assurance that my mother would be well cared for and understood. All staff are outstanding. Their compassion, humour and sensitivity are beyond reassuring to me and in turn my mother. The professionalism and training in dementia is thorough and sensitive to her needs and moods. The comfort and excellent food at Red Oaks make it a real home where visitors are welcomed."

"My wife entered Barchester Red Oaks Care Home on 17th January 2024 having been discharged (on 2nd January) with terminal lymphoma in addition to her existing dementia illness. Prognosis was passing within two months. Red Oaks management and staff cared for my wife in an exemplary manner; I can't speak too highly for every aspect of care and compassion to both my wife and family. Three weeks into her stay, my wife passed away, peacefully and with dignity that I/family will treasure."

"It is so nice to visit my friend at Red Oaks. The atmosphere is so calm and friendly and she seems very content there. The gardens are lovely and she enjoys her activities and coffee mornings. I also have the opportunity to have lunch with her and 'fish and chip Friday' is very popular! There is a lovely hair salon which the ladies love to visit and nothing is too much trouble."

"Every member of staff is very caring and all remember my Christian name. I received wonderful service from the chef in the kitchen on the first floor, where each day I had a full English breakfast with coffee with milk followed by toast and marmalade."

"When my aunt was admitted to Red Oaks, she was very frail and we did not expect her to last the month. Thanks to the wonderful care she has had over the last five months she has just achieved her 100th birthday. She no longer uses her Zummer frame and goes up and down the stairs without any help/she is very happy and well-settled."

"My mother has been at Red Oaks for 8 months. The staff have been excellent, treating Mum with great care, compassion and dignity at all times. She has been encouraged to join in activities and particularly enjoys the various musical events that are organised. All members of staff have been helpful and cooperative when answering the phone and taking the phone to Mum wherever she happens to be. I have been kept informed about any medical issues and then have been dealt with quickly and appropriately."

"A belated but nevertheless sincere thank you to the management and staff of Red Oaks for the kindness and care they gave my dear Mum during her two-year stay from January 2021 - January 2023. Mum was 102 when she passed away but during her stay, she thoroughly enjoyed all the activities particularly the singing and the art club together with the garden parties on the beautiful grounds. Mum also made great friends with her carers and nurses and their kindness and attention to detail were much appreciated by me and my close family. Red Oaks was excellent."

"A fantastic homely, safe and engaging home and community which my father-in-law enjoys immensely. He is thriving and now enjoys all the activities which he had given up and isolated himself from as his dementia/Alzheimer’s made it difficult for him to join in. The food, facilities and activities make this home more like an all-inclusive resort with beautiful grounds and attentive staff. The staff go above and beyond to care for him and he really enjoys being part of the community."

"Following a stay for respite care, my mother decided to stay at Red Oaks. The staff are very friendly, helpful and kind and she is settling in very well with their support and encouragement. The manager and nurses have been very responsive and helpful with the necessary paperwork and support with funding and planning for permanent residency at the care home."

"As a family, who were looking after our father in his own home, it was a heartwrenching decision to contemplate him ever going into a home. As much as we can provide for him at home, we are not able to provide him with the care and attention that his ill health needs. Every single staff member has treated him with dignity while enabling him to feel safe and secure in those new surroundings. We are totally in was of all the wonderful support given to Dad and us as a family."

"For two years my mother was a resident. She clearly felt safe and contented. Every member of staff without exception showed her kindness and consideration. The nursing staff were very skilled and kept us informed about any health issues. I am so glad he chose Red Oaks. Thank you to the manager and all her staff."

"The care my mother receives is first class - compassionate, professional, dignified and patient, always with good humour. The home is of a very high standard, well-kept, well-furnished and with spacious rooms. Activities are well-organised and every effort is made to accommodate residents' own interests. The food is excellent, produced by a great team, again, catering where required for individual tastes and requirements. Having my mother there is a weight off our minds, knowing she is safe and cared for to a very high standard even during these difficult times when recruitment of care staff is so challenging. Well done and thank you to the whole team."

"My parents are in their early 90’s. It was very difficult to find a care home that would suit both parents when one is living with dementia and the other had physical frailties. Barchester Red Oaks Care Home has welcomed both on the same floor with adjoining rooms. The nursing care they receive is discreet, dignified, and above all, very kind. There are activities every day, and the staff have gone to great lengths to nurture and encourage each parent’s different skills and interests. They eat together in the lovely dining room, and my dad says it’s like being in a hotel. He loves taking his visitors to the in-house cafe. My mother appreciates being surrounded by beautiful grounds. Adjusting to being cared for after being independent your whole life is not easy, but Red Oaks has done everything in its power to make the transition as smooth as possible. The rest of the family can now breathe easy knowing that both parents are safe, well cared for and together."

"Red Oaks is a very comfortable house set in beautiful gardens. Each resident has a large and airy room, which they are able to personalise and can enjoy the peaceful gardens. The staff offer a very high standard of both nursing and personal care. Everyone is so helpful and friendly. We feel part of a large, happy family. The catering staff make sure that a varied menu is always available, and the food is delicious. We are very lucky to have such a lovely residential home with a dedicated and professional team."

"It has been a very difficult year since my dear father's death in June 2021, and I am now catching up on the things I need to do. So this is really the first proper opportunity I have had to write a review. The manager and staff at Red Oaks looked after my father wonderfully in the last few weeks of his life. Their kindness, care and patience I will never forget. For the first time in three years, I felt a wonderful sense of peace and trust with all the carers. Red Oaks is a very special place. Highly recommend."

"From the time I arrived, I was given every consideration. Initially, I was a Red Oaks while a home care package was worked out. During this time it became clear to me that home care would not really be a feasible option. After several discussions with one of the staff I was reassured on m points also I decided to stay at Red Oaks to end of life."

"The lead up to Christmas is busy for everyone, so I was extremely impressed by the number and range of activities for residents throughout December. Red Oaks was tastefully decorated and welcoming, and all the staff were cheerful and helpful to residents and visitors alike, from the management team to the nursing staff and cleaners. Without a doubt, the Covid pandemic is adding a tremendous workload to all the staff, but they continue to provide the best quality care that I could wish for my mother."

"Mum moved into Red Oaks in the midst of the Pandemic, a challenging time for everyone. The whole team at Red Oaks have been so kind, both to mum and us her family. It's evident that the staff take their time to really get to know the residents as individuals. The atmosphere is upbeat and welcoming, the grounds are lovely and residents are encouraged to enjoy them. I am grateful every day that mum is safe and well cared for."

"For the last month I have been able to visit my mother in her room. This has been wonderful as she can hear me more clearly than when we used the visitor suite. It is lovely to see her room and talk about the pictures and ornaments that she has. I have been very impressed how clean and tidy Mum's room is, and all the areas the residents use. The staff are fantastic, they know everyone by name and are always helpful."

"I found all the staff extremely helpful and caring. They were always organising things for the residents to do, even with the added difficulty of lockdown. The whole place is very clean and tidy, more like a hotel than a care home. They looked after my auntie for what turned out to be the last year of her life and she thoroughly enjoyed herself. She loved being taken for walks in the beautiful extensive gardens they have there. You couldn't wish for a better place for your loved ones."

"A very nice care home in pleasant grounds and close to the town centre. The level of care and of caring is very high and staff are helpful, cheerful and polite. Life at the home is currently constrained by COVID restrictions which is a pity. Hopefully, things will open up more very soon and allow us a fuller appreciation of life there. A visitors toilet would have been helpful during these times and communication could have been better in the first few weeks."

"So wonderful to be able to visit Dad outside after all this time - brilliant in the gazebo. The staff have been amazing throughout lockdown - sending regular cards, letters and photos of Dad. "My mother lived at Red Oaks, Henfield for the last two-plus years of her life and my father visited most days. I visited frequently and would like to express my thanks and gratitude to the Manager and all the staff who genuinely cared about the people they looked after. There was a very good balance between maintaining dignity and autonomy but also recognising the limitations of the patients. The environment was much like an excellent hotel with beautiful grounds but was also home to all the residents. Staff paid attention to all the little things that meant so much to my mother and were very kind and caring. My father also felt very much at home and enjoyed the relationships he built with the staff and patients who also showed a lot of care towards him. The end of life care and support they gave to us as a family was exemplary and we stayed overnight with my mother and watched her draw her last breath. The nurturing care and support by individual staff meant so much to us."

"The care and attention of staff towards the residents of Red Oaks appears excellent. My only concern is the standard of the food which was at times satisfactory but at other times poor. The food, especially desserts, was frequently high in fats and sugars. I suggest to ask a famous chef for advice on how to improve the food quality. Food only needs to be simple but nourishing."

"I haven't been able to write a review about Red Oaks simply because it was so close to my heart. My father spent his last few years there until he died on the 10th November 2019. I cannot express how kind and caring his last few years were. The staff treated my father with more than dignity and were exceptional with their physical care; he never smelt like 'old man' for example, Dad was dressed properly and I am so grateful for everyone at Red Oaks not only for that but for treating a very very clever man and many guests like him with such respect. It's been four months since my father died and I look fondly back of coming in from what was a bit of a gruelling journey every fortnight - but worth every step - to the welcome I received at Red Oaks. Can't thank you enough. When the question is value for money as below, no money can buy the above. We were very lucky we had the money. However so grateful that we were able to find Red Oaks - for all the above reasons."

"My father and stepmother were resident in Red Oaks for over 18 months. They received very professional, thoughtful and loving care as their health declined. Words cannot adequately sum up how delighted I was with the care provided."

"Although expensive, Red Oaks provides a high-quality caring environment particularly for those with dementia. The management team are visible, engaging with residents. There is a good range of activities for residents to get involved with. The environment is excellent, beautiful grounds and very comfortable public area in which to meet up with the residents. If I could suggest one area for improvement it would be to engage relatives slightly more in decisions over nursing and interventions. Otherwise very satisfied. Thank you."

"I have been visiting Red Oaks as a volunteer for over four years subsequent to visiting my mother as a resident. Those residents who are less mobile and who remain in their rooms welcome companionship and befriending which the lovely carers provide, but not to the length of time that some residents would welcome. Barchester recognises the value of volunteers prepared to help bridge this gap. It's a rewarding voluntary occupation and often great fun!"

"My 92-year-old aunt spent 20 months in Red Oaks receiving full nursing care and I am so pleased we chose Red Oaks. It is a very caring, efficient, happy home, with many daily activities and organised outings and wonderful facilities. I visited most days during the 20 months at very random times and every single time saw first-hand the care and gentle handling of the residents by all the staff. It had a friendly, welcoming atmosphere both for residents and visitors. Plenty of space both indoor and outdoor and regularly involved in village activities which benefitted the residents. Highly recommend Red Oaks, if only all care homes could be as good as this one."

He already had advanced Alzheimer's when he first came but the compassion, kindness and care of everyone at Red Oaks made us feel he could not have been better looked after anywhere. "From the moment you walk into reception at Red Oaks, you are always greeted with a warm welcome. Everyone is treated with respect and dignity. All the Residents are encouraged to join in with a wide variety of activities and equally given the time and space to relax and do what they are comfortable with. Care is professional and respectful of individual needs. Mealtimes are very special. The food is excellent and beautifully served in the elegant dining room. All the staff smile a lot and call everyone by their first name creating a warm and safe environment. There is a real 'home from home' feeling where families are made to feel part of the life there. My Mother has been at Red Oaks for 4 months now and has settled in wonderfully well. The Staff have handled the adjustment for my Mother and all our family with care and understanding and given reassurance when necessary. "Thanks to the staff at Red Oaks yesterday, my husband and I had a wedding celebration for our close family and my grandmother who is currently a resident at Red Oaks. We had a local vicar visit and held it in the conservatory overlooking the beautiful gardens. The staff were so supportive and helpful to accommodate our rather unusual request. As our grandmother was unable to make the wedding in London, we decided to bring the wedding to her. Staff had set up the room brilliantly with flowers and prepared everything we needed. They were so helpful throughout the day taking photos etc, but most of all with Nannie being on hand when she needed support. Staff had spent the whole morning supporting Nannie to look extra special, curling her hair and putting on her wedding outfit and she looked fabulous! We cannot thank the staff team enough for accommodating us and allowing us to create such special memories we will treasure forever!"

"The setting at Red Oaks is beautiful, in the heart of a lovely village. The layout inside is well designed with a welcoming and sunny reception. The dining room and lounges are cosy and comfortable and my nannie's bedroom spacious. They seem to have thought of everything with a hair salon, secure garden/courtyard and a conservatory where you can have birthday gatherings and things like that. Above all else though, it's the staff that make it the most wonderful place. They care so much and in the weeks my nannie has been there, I can tell they've formed a bond with her. They take a pride in how she looks each day and are always there to help with anything we need. It only took a short while for my nannie to settle. We had expected it to take a lot longer and I believe it's the caring nature of the staff and their genuine interest in finding out what my nannie liked and didn't like, that enabled this to happen, especially when my nannie had lived alone and been independent beforehand."

"Red Oaks is a warm and friendly, comfortable environment for the residents. Staff try to ensure public spaces are homely and relaxing, with items of interest dotted about and music played in the background. The garden is a lovely space used in the summer for activities that also include the local community (concert, theatre production). The more able and lucid residents would like more regular outings to places of interest, shopping or pub for lunch/tea and some have commented they would like more activities to choose from. The less able to get about enjoy quality one to one social chats with me and others."

"I have been a volunteer here for 22 years. I come regularly on Wednesdays to help with their weekly church service. I also come on Sundays to have lunch and take one or two people for a walk with my cocker spaniel - we go to see and feed the ducks at a nearby pond. I think I am fairly observant and I am most impressed by the patience and loving kindness the staff show to the residents, even with people who are difficult. I enjoy coming here to Red Oaks and am always warmly welcomed (or is it my dog they love?!)"

There is an ethos in the home of not only practical and safe care but sympathetic nurture of the residents. I would also like to pay tribute to not only the lovely way they helped my mother but how kind they were to myself. I can strongly recommend the home as a place of care and kindness."

"The nurses and care staff were extremely kind and attentive to my father and treated hm with respect and where possible dignity. We would have loved to take him into the beautiful gardens but he was too disabled. However, for the more able I am sure the gardens would be a great comfort. We are enormously grateful for the care and support received from all the care staff in my father's final weeks."

"When visiting, a good welcome and helpfulness by staff. Having had the experience of visiting two people on a regular basis (at any time), having seen and witnessed how staff help them and the way they react to each person concerned. I have been impressed."

"Over a period of 3/4 years, we have had a brother and sister-in-law as residents. They were certainly capable of criticising if or when in their opinion it was necessary, but I am unable to recall an instance. Have visited at various times of the day and I can only compliment the staff on efficiency. I can only comment on my opinion formed during my occasional visits."

"My grandfather loved living here, right up to when he passed away. Day to day care was wonderful and saw the staff as extended family. They truly came into their own as his time to part came giving our family the chance to come and say goodbye and looking after my relatives after he died. The visitors flat was wonderful to be able to use when we visited from devon."

"My elderly aunt (suffering from dementia) was a resident of Red Oaks for 2.5years until her death in February 2017. The house is bright and cheerful looking, spotlessly clean, beautifully furnished and set in lovely gardens, in the centre of a busy, friendly and small country town. The cooking is a speciality (as is the lunchtime sherry) the chef takes great trouble to produce varied and tempting menus. This is a care home with professional nursing and my aunt was looked after with care, patience and affection by the carers and nursing staff. Especially during the last days of her life, when everything possible was done to make her comfortable, give her privacy and dignity. I strongly recommend it."

"Barchester Redoaks Care Home's care of my aunt is second to none. The carers are very caring and do lots of extras for the residents. I am completely happy that my aunt is there. I have visited many care homes in the last 10 years and there are many I would not put a dog in but Redoaks is excellent."

"My mother has been in Barchester Red Oaks Care Home for a month, moving there when her previous nursing home no longer felt able to cope with her increasing level of dementia. Her family dreaded the possible upset and confusion the move could cause her but I can honestly say there have been no problems at all. Every member of staff from my initial visit to view, the manager, the admin staff, nursing and care staff and since Mum moved in has been pleasant, helpful and professional."

"Red Oaks Care Home provides first class care in beautiful surroundings. The staff interact with residents as individuals and are unfailingly kind and available to them. My father has been extremely well looked after for almost four years after arriving in a very distressed and poorly state. Although he is now immobile and unable to communicate the staff know him well and treat him with great kindness and respect and his physical care is excellent. Any queries or requests I have are immediately attended to and I feel Red Oaks provides the best possible care."

"My lovely mum and dad have been residents at the Red Oaks since April 2016. Throughout their time, the staff have always been polite and helpful. The standard of care is excellent especially in Lavender Ward where my dad is staying. Whenever my sister and I visit, (which is weekly at least) everyone is very welcoming, I sometimes bring my little dog too! I would like to thank all the staff for looking after my mum and dad so compassionately."

"My mother is 97 - has dementia and cancer and is still mobile but declining rapidly. She is fond of all her carers and is treated with dignity and respect. The care she receives is excellent and consistent. Above all, despite her illness, she is happy and pain-free and knows she is well looked after."

"My husband, who has Parkinson's Disease with Lewy Bodies, went to live in Red Oaks in June 2016. It was the most traumatic time of our lives but all the staff at Red Oaks helped us in every way to adjust to our new circumstances. It is a welcoming, friendly and caring place to live and visit. The house is set in beautiful grounds and during the summer months, they often have outdoor events for all the residents and families to enjoy. The food is delicious and appetising and freshly cooked. Fresh fruit in the morning, a small sherry before lunch and tea and homemade cakes in the afternoon make it feel like home from home. Every member of staff from the management and carers to the housekeeping and catering staff know each individual resident's name and treat them with kindness, respect, patience and dignity."

"I have submitted a comprehensive review to the manager of Red Oaks (DCA). I am assisting with their pilot induction literature 'Getting To Know You' from a relatives standpoint. The experience is positive overall and I would recommend it: Strengths: Warmth of staff and quality of environment. Areas for improvement: Working with relatives and more transport methods."

"- A friendly, helpful atmosphere; clean environment. - Key workers could support service users more in purchasing their personal items. - Wonderful gardens used for different outdoor activities. - Happy service users generally not withstanding their medical situations restricting certain activities. - Good person-centred care provided."

"I am a volunteer at Red Oaks, I have been for 21 years. I visit on Sundays and have lunch with the residents (and I really enjoy the food!) On Wednesdays I come from 12.30-4.30. Originally I came to help with a weekly church service, but now (on Sundays) I visit people who would benefit a visit from me. Perhaps a lonely person or someone who hasn't been here for a while. I also sit with those who are very ill and perhaps give some comfort to the relatives, I love visiting Red Oaks and always feel very welcome."

"My sister has been a resident in Red Oaks for just over a year. She has been very happy and settled here. We visit at least two a week and have never noticed anything which would give us cause for concern. All the staff, even administrative staff are very caring, even with the most troubled resident. I am very happy that she is so well settled and cared for."

"My mother has been a resident at Red Oaks for three and a half years and soon settled in the homely and welcoming environment. I feel she is safe, secure, content and more importantly, so does she. A good level of caring staff, ensure my mother is not neglected and she has plenty of activities in which to participate. Also the option to enjoy the privacy of her room with its balcony and views across the gardens and countryside. It couldn't be better!"

I could not fault any part of the Red Oaks team, my dad came home full of tales after being slightly reluctant, we are in process for booking up another 2wks stay in September- 5 stars."

"From pre-assessment to the day of leaving to go home, everything was excellent, beautiful property and grounds (that were immaculately kept) friendly professional staff. Nothing was too much trouble, food and drink plentiful. My father in law hasn't stopped talking about his stay since he has been home. He is hoping to return for respite care (subject to a room being available) in September when we go on holiday. We are also in the process of arranging for him to go one day a week as he enjoyed it so much."
