Activities at Sherwood Court Care Home

Our home is always full of life, and we can thank our wonderful Activities Coordinators for this. Dedication to creating a unique and interesting activities programme is what sets us apart from other homes. We always take into consideration that some people would prefer to pursue their own interests, which is why our team strive to incorporative activities that cater to a wide range of tastes and hobbies. Our trips out are always fun and exciting as well, and residents are guaranteed to return with stories to tell their loved ones!

Life at Sherwood Court Care Home

A dance around the May pole!

The rain did not stop us having fun here at Sherwood Court in Preston as we celebrated May Day with a dance around the May pole which brought much laughter to those watching from indoors.  Once the dancing had stopped the celebrations continued indoors with a virtual performance from Preston Crusaders Junior Group whilst residents enjoyed a slice of home-made cake and refreshments. It was a fun-filled day for all!

Close encounters with visit to Zoo

Staff and residents at Barchester’s Sherwood Court Nursing Home care home in Preston were treated to an exciting virtual tour of Five Sisters Zoo, hosted by Head of Education, Adam Welsh.

Five Sisters Zoo is a family run zoo with over 160 different animal species from around the world.  Originally a garden centre that helped to rehome unwanted pets, the animal collection grew and grew until the zoo was officially founded in 2005.  Now Five Sisters Zoo is the most visited wildlife attraction in West Lothian.

Gone are the days when a visit to the zoo was merely a fun day out.  Adam’s presentation showed all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes at the zoo and explored the vital conservation, rescue and education work carried out at FSZ, and at most modern zoos.

Double celebrations at Sherwood Court

Team members and residents at Sherwood Court in Preston had a special day celebrating National Tea Day and the Queen’s 95th birthday on 21 April in style.

The team at the home put together a tea party to mark the day, which falls on the Queen’s landmark birthday. Supplied with a tasty selection of biscuits, cakes, and of course, teas for the event, the residents had lots of fun taking part in sessions including themed quizzes and virtual tea celebrations.

The residents also dedicated time to write cards and letters to the Queen to wish her a very happy birthday.

National Tea Day is observed in the United Kingdom every year on 21 April to celebrate the drinking of tea. It is celebrated in tea rooms, hotels, pubs and cafés through special events, and charitable fundraising events held across the country. Afternoon tea was introduced in England by Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, in the year 1840.

Families reconnect

For residents at Sherwood Court Nursing home in Preston, Fulwood, the long awaited reunion with one family member has become a reality, as one single named visitor is now allowed to visit each resident in their bedroom.

There has been much anticipation of this moment by families and residents alike.  Guidance was issued by the Government on March 4 and Barchester Healthcare, who run Sherwood Court Nursing home, is proceeding with a safe and cautious approach to visiting. Strict protocols are in place with all visitors required to have a negative Lateral Flow Device test result before being allowed into the home, and infection control measures and social distancing in place for every visit, with hand holding allowed but not recommended.

Despite the need for testing and social distancing, it was still welcome news for so many residents and their family members to be able to meet in the comfort of their bedroom. Residents and their relative enjoyed getting together and catching up face to face.
