Activities at South Grange Care Home

Our specialist activities staff are committed to organising a mix of activities and events for residents and the local community to get involved in, including trips out to local places of interest in our minibus and visits from entertainers and musicians. It is important to us that each individual who we support can get as much from these as possible, so we try our best to arrange activities that reflect their interests and capabilities as best as possible, and encourage them to participate in any way they can. We also encourage relatives to join with activities and events as often as they can.

Home celebrates 30th anniversary

South Grange care home, in Monifieth, has thrown an afternoon tea party for staff and residents to celebrate 30 years of serving the local community.

Staff and residents commemorated this special occasion with a virtual concert and tea party. We also welcomed our new General Manager Fiona Torrie and presented her with a bouquet of flowers to welcome her. Another presentation was made to our Hospitality Supervisor Christine Penman for her 30 years’ long service award.

South Grange has built up excellent reputations within its local communities. The home regularly holds events and activities for its residents and surrounding neighbours. The building was originally constructed in 1991, it was formerly an old farm, and the room which was used as the mill was a listed part of the building and is now knowing as the round room to the residents and the staff this room is used daily for visitor’s events and activities

General Manager, Fiona Torrie said: “It is important to recognise the hard work of our staff here at South Grange.  For the past 30 years, we have provided a caring home for our residents as well as the best possible environment for our staff.  Today not only enables us to celebrate their hard work, but it's also an opportunity to thank the residents, their relatives and friends who have made South Grange such a loving home.”

South Grange care home is run by Barchester Healthcare, one of the UK’s largest care providers, which is committed to delivering personalised care across its care homes and hospitals. South Grange provides nursing care and YPD unit for residents from respite care to long term stays.

Creative writing with Mike Gayle

We had a great time joining journalist and novelist, Mike Gayle, for an intriguing virtual interview, during which he shared top tips for creative writing with our residents and read passages from his latest book, All the Lonely People.

We were thrilled to find out about Mike’s background, to understand what led him to become a writer and his creative process.

It was a lovely talk, enjoyed by all, especially by our keen writers at the home.

Residents take to the high seas

We had a lovely time joining Paul Hawkins and Lisa Richards from Unilever for an exciting Virtual Cruise experience.

Our residents were welcomed with mocktails as Lisa and Paul took them on a magical journey to 3 mystery destinations, which were uncovered after a few clues.

Paul demonstrated how to create a few of the local traditional dishes, which our residents had the opportunity to try too.

The event evoked lots of great memories and it was truly enjoyed by all.

A trip to Dundee

South Grange residents went on a sightseeing trip of Dundee and one of the best places to go for the view is the top of the Law Hill. The ladies were a bit disappointed with the weather but it did not stop them getting out of our bus and having a good look around Dundee from the top. They were able to see right across to Fife and both Bridges.

Activity coordinator celebrates 10-years service

An Activity coordinator at South Grange in Monifieth has received a prestigious 10 Year Service Award in celebration of working at Barchester Healthcare for 10 years.

Sheena, now Activity coordinator, started at Barchester in September 2011 and has worked with residents and their relatives to ensure that their needs have been met over the years.

Jane McFarlane, Employee Services Director at Barchester said: “I’m always pleased to hear stories about the long service of Barchester staff and am delighted Sheena has achieved this milestone. It is dedication like this that ensures our residents are provided with a happy place to live.”

Worry Doll and Polita Puffin Project

Local nursery interact with our residents regarding their ‘worry doll’ project which consists of an opportunity for intergenerational between care homes.    Our residents were asked to make pompoms for the children and they made worry dolls in a bag for our residents.

The reason for this is regarding a story book wrote by Abbey Craig called Worry Doll and Polita Puffin. The children and residents were able to ask one another what made them sad happy or a little worried and each group swapped ideas and gifts to use as comforters and came up with the ending to Abbeys story book.
