Activities at South Grange Care Home

Staff and residents at Barchester’s South Grange care home in Monifeith were treated to a unique performance from English National Ballet to celebrate International Youth Day on August 12.

Prior to the day itself, members of English National Ballet’s youth dance company, ENBYouthCo, and their Creative Director, Richard Bermange, asked residents to submit their memories of going to see films over the years.  The cast then used these evocative descriptions, along with Arielle Smith’s digital production of Jolly Folly, as inspiration for their performance.  

We had a fun-filled day as we raised a glass and tasted top ales in recognition of International Beer Day from around the world, the Asia beers were a top hit with the gentlemen with the ladies preferring to stick to their refreshing lemonade.

Our residents enjoyed a mini beer festival in the garden and got involved in a variety of interesting activities including a friendly competitive pub themed quiz.

Some of our residents spent time learning about craft brewing and the history of beer, others preferred to join the beer tasting session in the garden and to try beers from all around the world.

It was a wonderful day, enjoyed by all.

Staff and residents at Barchester’s South Grange care home in Monifieth were treated to a talk about nightclub culture by V&A Dundee Curator, Kirsty Hassard.  The presentation forms part of a series of six talks and virtual tours that V&A Dundee is hosting for Barchester Healthcare’s care homes and private hospitals across the UK.

V&A Dundee is Scotland’s design museum, it showcases Scotland’s outstanding design achievements and features world-class exhibitions alongside the permanent Scottish Design Galleries, and a changing programme of commissions, events and activities.  

Kirsty’s talk looked at the history and design of night clubs, and examined club culture from the 1960s to the present day.  She explored their evolution and development around the world, from Italy to America, and closer to home, looking at their importance as cultural venues and designed spaces.

Residents thoroughly enjoyed a delicious tea party with traditional Yorkshire Tea and cakes.

We listened to some Yorkshire songs and discussed and tasted many of the famous brands that were produced in Yorkshire, (e.g. Liquorice Allsorts, Jelly Babies and Kit Kats), to name a few.

Residents of South Grange had a fantastic afternoon making cocktail’s and mock tail’s. Residents created their own drinks with extra on the side so that everyone could have a shot of whipping up a tasty treat.  The great Scottish weather didn’t stop their original plans to host their cocktail session in the homes beautiful gardens, everyone simply took their ingredients indoors. 

South Grange residents had a very enjoyable day celebrating Friendship Day.  Over the last few months residents, staff, families and friends have all taken part in making a scarf to wrap round the home.  The scarf was unravelled and we were able to wrap it around the home with the residents helping. Residents also enjoyed writing friendship cards to staff members, families and friends.
