Activities at Spen Court Care Home

Activities are an integral part of life at our care home. We want to ensure that the people we support have as much fun as possible during their time with us, so it’s important that our activities programme is created with the interests of residents in mind. Our skilled Activities Coordinators bring a certain uniqueness to the home that can’t be found anywhere else, and which is reflected in the activities they organise.

Angela Blackburn

Head of Activities

My name is Angela and I am the Head Activities Coordinator here at Spen Court. I get so much satisfaction out of knowing I have made a difference to people’s days and have filled the home with a sense of community and happiness.

We feel it is important to build community connections and maintain our resident’s social interaction outside the care home.

We ensure we deliver a person-centered program of events and activities and build strong relationships with our residents, their families and friends.

Life at Spen Court Care Home

Dancing to the beat

Keeping active, having social interactions and being mentally stimulated is very important to Residents at Spen Court.   Residents enjoy their gentle exercises and ‘boogie’ afternoons to music, resident Sybil was soon up on her feet dancing along to the music.

Residents enjoy Halloween cooking demo

Residents had a lovely time joining Chef Alex Connell from Vegetarian for Life for a Halloween-inspired virtual cooking demo.

Alex demonstrated how to prepare a few themed dishes, such as root vegetable tagine, roasted butternut squash mac-n-cheese, chocolate pots with piped biscuits and flapjacks.

Our residents were delighted to be a part of this lovely virtual culinary session by tasting the vegetarian dishes from the comfort of our home.

Residents enjoy a virtual talk from journalist and novelist, Mike Gayle

We had a great time joining journalist and novelist, Mike Gayle, for an intriguing virtual interview, during which he shared top tips for creative writing with our residents and read passages from his latest book, All the Lonely People.

We were thrilled to find out about Mike’s background, to understand what led him to become a writer and his creative process.

It was a lovely talk, enjoyed by all, especially by our keen writers at the home.

Virtual Cruise Experience

We had a lovely time joining Paul Hawkins and Lisa Richards from Unilever for an exciting Virtual Cruise experience.

Our residents were welcomed with mocktails as Lisa and Paul took them on a magical journey to 3 mystery destinations, which were uncovered after a few clues.

Paul demonstrated how to create a few of the local traditional dishes, which our residents had the opportunity to try too.

The event evoked lots of great memories and it was truly enjoyed by all.

Century celebrations for resident

Celebrations have been in full swing at Spen Court care home, as one of its residents reaches her centenary in style.

Florence Cook was joined by staff, relatives, friends and other residents as she received a telegram from the Queen in recognition of her landmark birthday. A celebration was held at the home and guests enjoyed a special birthday cake made by the home’s chef assistant Kayley Baldwin.

Florence was born in Norristhorpe, West Yorkshire on the 1st October 1921, Florence served in the army as a cook. Florence went onto meet the love of her life, George Arthur Cook, they married and went on to have 6 children. Florence continued her career as a cook in a local school for children with special needs before coming to Spen Court care home, where she is enjoying a new chapter of her life.

Pet therapy with Quaver

Residents at Spen Court recently enjoyed a pet therapy visit in which they welcomed, Quaver an ambassador for the Guide Dogs for the Blind.  Quaver brought along owners, Sarah and Craig.

Quaver was a previously a working guide dog for the blind but due to several ear infections Quaver became an ambassador the society. Quaver is 5-years old and took a real shine to Elsie, a resident who is partially sighted and was delighted with all the furry attention. Owners Sarah and Craig also shared information to residents on the training routine, everyone found the visit interesting and are looking forward to them visiting again soon.
