Activities at Thistle Hill Care Home
Our activities team are great at building the activities programme around the likes and interests of the people we care for. Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is part of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat are always welcomed.
Thistle Hill Life Enrichment Team
Ursula and Katie make up our fantastic Activities Team here at Thistle Hill.
They develop and oversee an active living programme for each resident, which encourages mobility, social contact, independence and fun. Each and every person can thrive and live to their full potential with no day ever being the same. They bring great enthusiasm and spark to the home and have one passion, which is to deliver an amazing and vibrant activities programme to cater to all tastes and abilities.

Activities and Events Partnerships
As part of our bespoke life-enrichment programmes, we host a number of live virtual events in the home on a regular basis through a number of partnerships with places of interest and world class performance companies
Life at Thistle Hill Care Home
Royal Botanic Garden
Our homes enjoyed a wonderful virtual tour of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh with Community Engagement Manager, Charlotte Walker, and Botanic Cottage Operations Co-ordinator, Laura Gallagher.
The residents were thrilled to learn more about the history of the beautiful Garden, which is now a home to an impressive plant collection from around the world.
Charlotte and Laura also gave a demonstration of making fresh herbal tea and were happy to answer our questions. The virtual experience was truly enjoyed by all who joined.
Oktoberfest
Residents at the Thistle Hill Care Centre came together to celebrate Oktoberfest, held over a two-week period and ending on the first Sunday in October.
The festival originated on October 12, 1810, in celebration of the marriage of the crown prince of Bavaria, who later became King Louis I, to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen.
Residents at the Thistle Hill Care Centre enjoyed celebrating the world’s largest folk festival by taking part in an authentic German experience, by enjoying a live cooking demonstration, listening and singing along to German music, watching a Bavarian band on YouTube ,staff dressing up in costumes, taking part in an Oktoberfest themed quiz
Beautiful bouquets
Our homes had a fantastic time joining members of the Wallace Collection for an amazing sensory session.
During the live virtual experience, our residents explored one of the museum’s most beautiful Dutch flower paintings and learnt new drawing techniques.
We cannot wait to put our creative skills to a test and produce beautiful paintings of our own.
Everyone enjoyed the lovely talk, we all had lots of fun and it’s given us plenty of ideas.
Roald Dahl
Last week the Thistle Hill Care Centre celebrated Roald Dahl Day with visiting children from the local nursery, who joined our residents for a story reading.
Our lounge area was decorated in the theme of Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory, much to our residents and visiting children’s delight.
Vintage car show
Motor enthusiast residents and staff at the Thistle Hill Care Centre, in Knaresborough, were hosts to the members of the ‘Harrogate Car Enthusiasts’ car club who brought their magnificent vintage cars and a tractor along for the day, for all to admire.
Staff and residents were delighted to invite the ‘Harrogate Car Enthusiasts’ car club along to show off their wonderful cars and talk to residents and visitors about them. Everyone had a fantastic time comparing the merits of the different makes and models and discussing their histories.
Music through the ages
Our homes had a brilliant time with curator Sarah Deters as she took us on a virtual ‘Music Through the Ages’ tour of St Cecilia’s Hall: Concert Room and Music Museum.
Our residents were thrilled to discover weird and wonderful musical instruments, hear their unusual sounds, and find out how instruments have changed over the last 500 years.
The virtual live event explored the world-renown collection of musical instruments on display at St Cecilia’s Hall, Scotland’s oldest concert hall.
