Activities at Upton Bay Care Home

Activities are an integral part of life at our care home. We want to ensure that the people we support have as much fun as possible during their time with us, so it’s important that our activities programme is created with the interests of residents in mind. Our skilled Activities Coordinators bring a certain uniqueness to the home that can’t be found anywhere else, and which is reflected in the activities they organise.

Karen Grant

Activities Lead, Dementia Champion

I first worked in the care sector in 2010, starting in domiciliary care and progressing to Care Coordinator. I have since gained a wealth of experience in dedicated dementia and residential activities, working as a peripatetic activities coordinator in 16 out of 20 homes within a group, and then in 2018, I was part of a team that commissioned a new luxury care home, where I was an Activities Team Leader.

I enjoy making wishes come true for residents: in February 2015, I organised my first wedding in a care home. The lady resident who was living with dementia was unable to travel to Hertfordshire for her granddaughters wedding, so I brought the wedding to her. I organised a wedding blessing at the home; we had a vicar, a choir, all of the bridal party, the flowers, a buffet, a wedding cake, champagne—the full works.

In 2017, I organised a smaller wedding in the garden, and this was a special wish for a gentleman resident to see his granddaughter married. Organising these special moments gives me a lot of pleasure, knowing I have made them feel special and to give families that happiness and see them smile.

I cannot wait to welcome our residents into their wonderful new home and help to bring smiles, joy and laughter to each day.

Karen is also one of our dementia champions

It Must Have Been Love!

Romance has filled the air this week at Upton Bay, as we celebrated all that we 'amour'!

With classic love songs sounding through our home all week, our ladies and gents came together over a romantic afternoon tea combined with a virtual singalong with other Barchester Healthcare Homes around the country, followed by a candlelit dinner with friends. Chef cooked up an exceptional Valentine's menu for the event, featuring:

-Sweet-heart Potato Soup with 'week at the knees' Stilton Crumbles

-Plenty-more-fish-in-the-Sea Bass Fillet with 'Oh Honey' roasted vegetables

-Double Layer Chocolate Tort with 'Chantilly-Lace-and-a-pretty-face' Cream

Knit and Natter

Knit and Natter is in full swing! Each Thursday morning, our cosy cafe turns into a very crafty corner for local knitters, stitchers and crocheters, working hard on their woolly projects. Perhaps you’ve gone some needles and yarn sitting around, and need a friendly space to motivate you to finish that handmade jumper! Come along to our Knit and Natter group this Thursday at 10:30 for complimentary tea, coffee and cake.

Our lovely ladies are happy to help with any stitches you may be having trouble with!

All ages and abilities welcome.

One Year Til Becoming a Centenarian!

It was 'happy birthday' all round as resident Ray celebrated the big 99!

Surrounded by friends, family, and the team, all of Upton Bay came together to celebrate the milestone age with Ray. Gifts, cards, balloons and cake, the formula was just right for a most memorable birthday!

Ray, who can add seasoned musician to his bow strings, entertained his companions for an evening of live music on the piano, even dazzling in a duet with resident Dorothy to accompany.

When asked what the secret is to a long and happy life, Ray commented, 'I don't know what's got me this far just so long as it gets me to 100 and beyond!'

We wish Ray another happy and healthy year ahead at Upton Bay.

The Year of the Rabbit

Ladies and gents at Upton Bay we’re excited to experience the culture of the Orient for Chinese New Year this week.

Having beautifully decorated their home with vibrant red and gold, symbolising prosperity, wealth and happiness, we delighted in a tea party with delicious bunny shaped scones and pastries, followed by trivia and watching how the world celebrates this exciting festivity.

And of course, no Chinese New Year would be complete without the parade of the Dragon, crafted by our residents!

We wish all our friends of Upton Bay a prosperous and joyful New Year!

Keeping the Mind Active

Keeping the mind active is first and foremost in the golden years. Some like to keep up with the daily crossword in the paper, or the odd sudoko to test their arithmetic.

Just take a look at these determined expressions during an array of activities, including games club, craft and card making and a spot of indoor gardening.

The most wonderful time of the year

We share with you our 'most wonderful' snaps from Christmas Day, featuring our very own handsome Santa Claus! Resident Ray was delighted to don his Father Christmas costume and spread a little yuletide magic amongst our ladies and gents, each receiving their special gifts from Old Saint Nick himself!

We banqueted over a scrumptious Christmas Day Dinner, pulled crackers with our companions and made sure to eat every last After Eight in the box before bedtime!

We were stuffed with Chef's delicious lunch, complete with all the trimmings, and our exceptional team ensured our residents had a fabulous day from start to finish amongst friends and family.

With a few more days left to marvel at the beautiful decorations, we say goodbye to 2022 and welcome the New Year with open arms!
