Activities at Caldy Manor Care Home

Staff and residents at Barchester’s Caldy Manor care home in Caldy were invited to a virtual tour and talk about the wonders of Hereford Cathedral led by a team of staff and volunteers who look after the magnificent cathedral building.

Hereford is home to one of the oldest cathedrals in England.  The site of the cathedral has been a place of worship since the 8th Century, the date the cathedral was founded is thought to be 696 and religious services have taken place since medieval times. 

Residents were invited to join the team from Hereford Cathedral as they were given a glimpse of the spectacular building and its treasures as they were taken on a tour of the site. From the stunning gardens which lead down to the River Wye, to the Mappa Mundi and Chained Library, the virtual visit shared the history and beauty of the historic building.

Volunteers who give up their free time to provide extra support at Caldy Manor care home in Caldy, were given a special thank you during Volunteers Week 2021.   

Volunteers Week, which takes place this year from June 1-7, allows us to celebrate and recognise the hard work and commitment of selfless volunteers who go above and beyond for our residents and patients. They provide added help by supporting and engaging in life enrichment activities, as well as offering meaningful companionship for residents who truly appreciate it. Volunteers Week is the perfect opportunity to say thank you for their amazing contribution over the past year.

Homes decided to celebrate all their amazing volunteers by holding a special lunch and presenting our volunteers with gifts from our residents, The Mayor of Wirral sent a video message congratulating Annette Franz and Stan Bristow on their dedication to residents at Caldy Manor.

Staff and residents at Barchester’s Caldy Manor care home in Caldy had a fantastic time celebrating National Fish & Chip Day on Fryday 4th June, surely one of the best days of the year!

Residents enjoyed a fish & chip lunch from Marigolds in West Kirby, an award winning fish & chip shop. Volunteer, Annette Franz and Activities Lead, Debbie Thomas have been busy raising money for our residents and were able to treat residents and staff out of funds raised, It was a real treat for everyone. We celebrated with a glass of Buck’s Fizz. Later on residents enjoyed a quiz where they were tested on fun fish & chip facts.

General Manager, Hannah Roberts, said: “It wasn’t just the residents that were excited when we found out there was a National Fish & Chip Day, the eyes of all our staff lit up too – fish & chips are such an iconic dish, everyone loves them and it’s even better when there is a good excuse to eat them!”

Staff and residents were treated to an exciting live streaming tour of Knowsley Safari, hosted by Engagement Assistant, Verity Dann.

Knowsley Safari has been welcoming visitors for 50 years since it opened in July 1971.  Situated in the Knowsley area of Merseyside, the safari park is home to 750 animals on a 550 acre site, it boasts the longest safari drive in the UK.

Verity’s workshop took a peek behind the scenes at Knowsley to find out what it is really like to work in such a demanding yet rewarding world.  Residents discovered what a day in the life of a keeper entails from feeding time with the giraffes and meerkats through to training sessions and everything in between.  Verity explained some of the conservation projects that Knowsley Safari is involved with and how this is positively affecting some of the world’s most endangered species

Here at Caldy Manor we were delighted to spend time creating a beautiful floral masterpiece to enter the #BloomingBarchester competition in partnership with Blooming Haus following their amazing virtual flower arranging masterclass.  We all had a wonderful time decorating and working on our arrangements and we are happy to say we were impressed with our skills in applying all the tips and ideas learnt during the class to make a colourful floral design.

Staff and residents at Barchester’s Caldy Manor care home in Caldy were treated to a photographic tour and talk about the era of ocean travel by V&A Dundee Curator, Charlotte Hale.  The presentation forms part of a series of six talks and virtual tours that V&A Dundee is hosting for Barchester Healthcare’s care homes and private hospitals across the UK.

V&A Dundee is Scotland’s design museum, it showcases Scotland’s outstanding design achievements and features world-class exhibitions alongside the permanent Scottish Design Galleries, and a changing programme of commissions, events and activities.
