Activities at The Dales Care Home

We understand that the people we support have passions and interests that could be difficult to pursue after moving into a care home – but that doesn’t mean we don’t encourage them to try! Some hobbies can define a person, so our Activities Coordinators are dedicated to ensuring that everyone we support is able to do what makes them happy to the best of their abilities. Social events are organised with individual tastes in mind and with the idea that residents have the opportunity to try new and exciting things.

Kay Thompson

Activities Coordinator

Hi, my name is Kay and I am the activities coordinator here at the Dales.  I joined the team in June 2021 and I love spending time with the residents each day, delivering meaningful activities that keep our residents active and social stimulated, more importantly we have fun!  Our life enrichment programme is varied and we have lots to do!

Before I joined the home I was a lecturer teaching young individuals with high needs, it is very different being an activities coordinator but it does help with understand how to ensure everyone is happy each and every day in everything that we do.

I look forward to meeting you when you visit our home.

Life at The Dales Care Home

Home goes nuts for Squirrel Appreciation Day

Staff and residents at Barchester’s Dales Care Home in Draughton got up close and personal with some furry friends when they celebrated Squirrel Appreciation Day on 21st January.

Squirrel Appreciation Day is an annual nationwide event raising awareness of the plight of the native red squirrel population, which is in sharp decline. The aim of the event is to inspire people to take action for wildlife. The cold winter months are especially tough for animals and birds; as temperatures drop and food becomes scarce, wildlife such as squirrels need a little extra help.

Residents had a brilliant time learning about squirrels and conservation efforts to try to restore the red squirrel population, we painted and put together wooden feeders and put them out for the squirrels.

Everlasting flowers

A lovely flower creation with The Amazing Flower Kit here at The Dales. Always good doing a spot of flower arranging but these flowers will last forever without watering.

National popcorn day

We were all ready for the National Popcorn Day. We tasted the different flavours of the popcorn – we wondered which one would be our favourite and didn’t know it was possible to get cookies and cream flavoured popcorn. We then went on to watch Singin’ in the Rain, nearly feeling like we were and the cinema but the popcorn dishes were not big enough.

The Grinch tries to steal Christmas

After our movie morning yesterday - How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Grinch decided to pop in this morning, thankfully Christmas hasn’t been stolen from us here at The Dales. Merry Christmas everyone.

Christmas games

The fun we have with the reindeer antlers game here at The Dales. Residents and staff are enjoying our fun Christmas games, next is to have a go at Snowman darts followed with some mince pies and a lovely warm drink.

Hark the Herald Angels sing!

Heavenly voices rang out at The Dales Care Home as the community came together for a carol concert in the home’s garden.

Staff and residents at Barchester’s Dales Care Home care home, in Draughton, got in the Christmas spirit by inviting the community to come and join in with a carol concert in the home’s garden to sing some festive Christmas favourites.  The musical instruments were played by one of our residents’ family.

There was mulled wine, hot chocolate and mince pies along with lots of other Christmas treats all prepared by head chef, Patrick Bonus to keep everyone warm.
