Activities at Derham House Care Home
We understand that the people we support have passions and interests that could be difficult to pursue after moving into a care home – but that doesn’t mean we don’t encourage them to try! Some hobbies can define a person, so our Activities Coordinators are dedicated to ensuring that everyone we support is able to do what makes them happy to the best of their abilities. Social events are organised with individual tastes in mind and with the idea that residents have the opportunity to try new and exciting things.
Kay Thompson
I have worked in the care sector for many years. I am fully trained in dementia awareness, and I have also trained as a dignity champion. I have been working here at Derham House since March 2019, and I am really enjoying my role here.

As part of our bespoke life-enrichment programmes, we host a number of live virtual events in the home on a regular basis through a number of partnerships with places of interest and world class performance companies
Life at Derham House Care Home
Armistice Day
At Derham House, we remembered the fallen soldiers and the end of World War One.
All residents and staff took part in the two minutes silence at 11:00 a.m. whilst we watched BBC1.
We also raised money for the Royal British Legion by selling poppies to residents, staff and visitors over the last few weeks.
''Lest We Forget."'
Songs of Praise
We recently had our monthly visit from the local baptist church. They came in to have a singalong with residents and read some stories.
Meal for Two
We recently hosted a meal for a married couple in our garden room.
It was a romantic set up with classical music playing in the background, wine and other refreshments, in addition to a beautiful view of our gardens.
They both commented on how lovely and special it was.
We aim to continue having lunches in the garden room, as it makes it a treat for whoever wants to go.
Halloween
Staff and residents got dressed up to celebrate Halloween whilst listening to a thrilling song list over a glass of wine, and baked 'snot' and 'blood' fairy cakes!
We also had pet therapy with Grace the dog dressed in bandages as the 'Mummy Chihuahua'
Everyone had a spooky time!
Light Sensory Therapy
Residents enjoyed light sensory therapy with calming music and it's really been putting a smile on their faces.
Going forward, we will be continuing with this on a more regular basis.
Bird Feeder
We made bird feeders using Cheerios and string. Residents enjoyed making these and, once they had finished, we hung them on the trees in our field and then spotted several blue tits and a woodpecker enjoying the treats. The squirrels loved them too!
