Activities at Drummond Grange Care Home
We understand that the people we support have passions and interests that could be difficult to pursue after moving into a care home – but that doesn’t mean we don’t encourage them to try! Some hobbies can define a person, so our Activities Coordinators are dedicated to ensuring that everyone we support is able to do what makes them happy to the best of their abilities. Social events are organised with individual tastes in mind and with the idea that residents have the opportunity to try new and exciting things.
Katie Nicolson
Katie Nicolson is our Head of activities here at Drummond since August 2023 beforehand she worked as an activity assistant in the home for two years. Before coming to Drummond Katie has worked in many care roles over the years and studied Psychology and Sociology at Queen Margaret’s University and was awarded a Degree of Bachelor of science in Psychology and Sociology at the start of 2022. Katie loves being part of the Activity department here at Drummond Grange and bringing new and exciting opportunities and experiences to the residents. When she’s not at work Katie is a local Girl Guide leader and youth leader for her churches youth group.

Life at Drummond Grange Care Home
Chef Masterclass with Head Chef Chris Lewis
To mark Great British Pie Week head chef put on a master class in pie making for all the residents
Residents enjoyed seeing how the pastry was made, decorating the pies with their own designs of tops and of course tasting them!
Historic Royal Palaces
Across our services, our residents were treated to a special virtual sensory storytelling session. Together with Art Historian Jon Sleigh and the Historic Royal Palaces community team, we explored several royal palaces through the theme of food, dining and celebration!
We enjoyed a fantastic taste-a-long experience from the comfort of our home, from Tudor treats to Stuart sweets. A lovely time was had by all.
Virtual Book Club
Across our services we had a lovely time joining Mark Piesing for an exciting virtual event to discuss his book ‘N-4 Down: The Hunt for The Arctic Airship Italia’.
Our residents were thrilled to find out more about the book and the fascinating story of the world-famous exploring airship Italia, returning from the North Pole on May 24, 1928. The airship was struck by a terrible storm and crashed somewhere over the Arctic ice, triggering the largest polar rescue mission in history.
The virtual book club experience was truly enjoyed by all.
Shrove Tuesday
The staff and residents at Drummond Grange care home in Lasswade, have been flipping and turning pancakes all morning in preparation for their annual Shrove Tuesday pancake day.
Drummond Grange has marked this year’s Pancake lots of pancakes! Starting with some fun residents practiced their flipping skill with some fake pancakes made of card to see who could flip the most without dropping them. Once they had worked up an appetite Katie Nicolson Activity coordinator at the home, tested her flipping skills on some real pancakes, serving them up with sweet and savoury fillings to the residents.
Drummond Grange opens Nail bar
After a donation from Resident Rhoda Gourly, activity staff were able to buy their very own gel nail polish equipment. This enabled the home to open Letitia’s Nail Bar, Named after Rhoda’s own late mother who herself loved getting her nails done. Residents are enjoying the weekly pamper by activity staff Katie Nicolson and Amy Sanderson.
Rhoda said “She would just like to thank activity coordinator Katie for making this happen. It is really a wonderful way to remember her late mother and for her to be a part of my life here at Drummond as she never got to see how wonderful it is”
Valentine's Day
Staff, residents and guests celebrated the day of love with live performance from singer Rose McBeth all while enjoying a cocktail.
Residents then settled in to listen to the Valentine day special of Radio Drummond, the homes resident made radio show before testing their knowledge with The Drummond Grange quiz of love where Team Love Hearts made up of staff and residents for the Melville unit were crowned the winners. Residents were then able to enjoy a treat from the ‘I Pick You’ Pick and mix station and take their pick of Cocktails, The Love Potion and Cupids Love Shot made by the Homes very own ‘Mixologist’ Activity coordinator Katie Nicolson.
