Activities at Glebefields Care Home

Activities are the cornerstone of a wholesome home experience, and our Activities Coordinators are always putting their creative minds to the test by organising new and exciting social events for residents to partake in. Of course, we take into account the likes and dislikes of those we support, so if someone doesn’t feel like trying something new, there will always be something on offer to reflect their personal interests. For the people who may just prefer some peace and quiet instead, we also offer one-to-one time that can be enjoyed with a nice cup of coffee or just a simple chat – whatever they desire.

Life at Glebefields Care Home

World Chocolate Day

Residents enjoyed a fun filled day for world chocolate day this year with chocolate related activities taking place throughout the day. We explored the history of the chocolate bar and how the Cadbury's wrapper has changed throughout the years, followed by a chocolatey quiz and finally making our own chocolate fridge cake in the afternoon.

Residents enjoyed smashing and crushing digestive biscuits before adding raisins and marshmallows and pouring in plenty of melted chocolate! We even made a separate diabetic friendly one so that every resident could enjoy some.

Laughter and Smiles at Glebefields

Residents on our Memory Lane community enjoyed an afternoon filled with Abba and dancing on their new smart television! Laughter and smiles filled the room as we became the real 'Dancing queens' and sang our hearts out. Residents sat down afterwards for a cool drink and a cake to refresh after all of the activity.

Beer Day

Residents, Bert, Victor and Tom thoroughly enjoyed a beer together in the sun this week for National Beer day. The weather was beautiful so we were lucky to be able to sit outside and Residents even requested to have their lunch outside.

After ice creams and plenty of cold drinks, the fun continued with a garden pub quiz and summer games. Residents were thrilled to be able to get out in the sun and said "Thank god we made the most of it before the rain again tomorrow!"

Cake Competition

Resident, Carole and Activities Co-ordinator, Emily put their baking skills to the test to design and bake a cake 'Fit for the Queen' for the Barchester competition.

Carole previously had two pet Corgis, so was thrilled when she found out about the competition and immediately suggested that we made a Corgi cake. Preparations went ahead immediately as Emily and herself decided to design a tear and share cake with cupcakes as the base of the cake so that we could all easily share the cake after completion. Carole was assigned the role of 'chief assistant' and brought along her own Corgi ornament to each of the cake decorating sessions so that Emily and the other residents could use it for reference, making sure at all times that we paid extra attention to detail from the fur around his feet, to the roundness of his bottom!

We worked tirelessly over several days to ice the cake and were thrilled with the outcome and nervous yet excited to enter it into the competition. Such fun was had by all to create this Corgi masterpiece and we are keeping our fingers crossed for the announcement! By the end of the week Carole said “I’m glad to have finished finally, I’ve been dreaming about Corgis since we started! But I’m so pleased with the outcome I think we’ve done well.”

83rd Birthday Celebrations

Resident, Kathleen, celebrated her 83rd birthday in an unconventional but happy way this year, with all of her friends gathered at a distance to share cake and presents. Lockdown restrictions didn’t stop us from sharing the day with Kath’s daughter, who joined us over FaceTime at various points in the day to sing 'Happy Birthday' and open presents together.

At Glebefields, we always try and make our residents' birthdays as special as possible and as close to how they would celebrate at home. This year, despite the lockdown restrictions, is no different. We will always make things work in whichever way possible and its lovely to see how much of a difference it makes.

VE Day Celebrations

Residents at Glebefields were surprised by a ration pick and mix sweet trolley this year for VE Day. Activities Coordinator, Emily, and staff danced along the corridors with a musical trolley filled with all the old classics, and visited residents in their rooms for a special pick and mix treat, alongside some scones and jam for afternoon tea time.

Complete with Aniseed balls, liquorice wheels, cola cubes and black jacks, the residents were thrilled to be transported back to their youth and really became kids in a candy shop again.

It really was a welcome light relief that brought some well-needed sunshine to both staff and residents. The hallways were decorated with VE Day bunting and the sound of Vera Lyn filled the corridors. We may not have been together as a group, but we were united in spirit to remember those who fought for us and to celebrate the victory.
