Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure are a major focus of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat is always be welcomed.

My name is Sophie, I am the Activities Coordinator here at Herne Place Care Home. It is my duty to ensure all residents feel happy and content. I love my job because I enjoy seeing our residents smiling and having fun on a daily basis.
I enjoy getting to know all of our residents on a one-to-one basis and in a group setting. This allows me to get to know their hobbies and ambitions as individuals, and fulfil these with life enriching activities they appreciate and will benefit from.

Life at Herne Place Care Home
World Card Making Day
We receive cards on special occasions, holidays and birthdays; they sit upon our mantle piece, and some of them are stored for precious memories. Whether it’s Christmas or our birthday, cards are a special way to let someone know you’re thinking of them.
Residents at Herne Place celebrated World Card Making Day by exploring their creativity by crafting personal cards to send to relatives and friends.
The activities team at Herne Place hosted a card making afternoon and sent their handmade cards to their loved ones.
Residents have been discussing how, with the advancements in technology and the rise of the internet, some people have stopped sending cards altogether, but sometimes receiving a card to open feels nicer, especially when it arrives in the post.
A Bit of Magic
Herne Place has bought a bit of magic to residents by installing the Tovertafel ‘Magic Table’ as a way to improve residents’ quality of life.
Created in the Netherlands, the Tovertafel uses interactive games to connect people in the mid-to-late stages of dementia with each other, all the while stimulating movement. Using interactive light projections, the Tovertafel, which can be played independently or as a group, invites participants to pop bubbles, sweep leaves or interact playfully with fish. Another game generates a series of well-known sayings and phrases, which often sparks discussion and brings back memories. Games are rich in colour, movement and detail, and allows people of all ages to play in a safe and comfortable environment.
We’re excited to bring a touch of magic to the residents at our home. It makes a big difference for residents who might not be able to join in conversations, or are prone to becoming agitated by helping to connect residents with the home and with each other, and it’s fun for the young and the young at heart.
Doing Our Bit for the Community
On Friday 11th September, armed with their masks, gloves, black bags and litter grabbers, Judith Knight, General Manager, together with some of her team, hit the beach at Herne Bay to do some litter picking.
We are very keen to engage and support the community at these unprecedented times.
