Activities at Herne Place Care Home
Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure are a major focus of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat is always be welcomed.
Sophie Glasgow
My name is Sophie, I am the Activities Coordinator here at Herne Place Care Home. It is my duty to ensure all residents feel happy and content. I love my job because I enjoy seeing our residents smiling and having fun on a daily basis.
I enjoy getting to know all of our residents on a one-to-one basis and in a group setting. This allows me to get to know their hobbies and ambitions as individuals, and fulfil these with life enriching activities they appreciate and will benefit from.

Life at Herne Place Care Home
Afternoon Tea
At 3pm every day, our residents enjoy afternoon tea with the team.
Friendship Day
Herne Place had a blast celebrating Friendship Day on 30th July, enjoying their new found friendships with each other and discussing what friendship means to them. There were smiles all round as staff also shared the importance of friends and how they can enrich your life.
The International Day of Friendship was proclaimed in 2011 by the UN General Assembly with the idea that friendship between peoples, countries, cultures and individuals can inspire peace efforts and build bridges between communities.
Today, Friendship Day is celebrated in many countries across the globe and is a special occasion that encourages people to celebrate their friendships – old and new – by spending time with their friends and family. Traditions vary between cultures but they generally include the exchange of friendship bands, cards, and other gifts to mark the day.
Care homes can play a key role in combating loneliness and social isolation in our communities, and what better place to start than Friendship Day?
World Chocolate Day
Residents at Herne Place revelled in all things sweet on World Chocolate Day with a range of chocolatey activities on Tuesday 7th July.
Staff helped residents decorate chocolate cakes and chocolate truffles, followed by a fun chocolate-themed quiz.
Our chef loves making sweet things and the chocolate delights went down a treat. It was great to see the residents decorate the cakes and give the chocolate a tasting too.
Family Reunion
For some residents at Herne Place, the long awaited reunion with family and friends became a reality recently, as garden visits have now been allowed to commence at the home.
There has been much careful planning and preparation for this moment behind the scenes. Social distancing was still in place, and homes that are able to take part must have a large accessible garden.
It was welcome news to so many residents, family, and friends. Residents and their loved ones got together in the home garden for tea and cake, and the garden was full of joy and chatter.
Supporting the Community
Herne Place has recently opened and not only are we welcoming new residents, we have become a drop off point for Canterbury Food Bank.
Canterbury Food Bank provides emergency three day food parcels to individuals and families in financial crisis in Canterbury, Herne Bay, Whitstable and surrounding villages.
Herne Place Supports Local Carers for Carers Week
Herne Place supported Age UK Herne Bay & Whitstable this week by supplying home-made fruit scones, jam and clotted to cream to all the wonderful local carers and their loved ones.
The chefs baked over 100 fruit scones, to go with the jams and clotted creams which were delivered for afternoon tea by Age UK along with sandwiches, strawberries and crisps.
Judith Knight, General Manager at Herne Place said: “It was a privilege to be able to do this for the carers in the local community. I am also very proud of the carers at Herne Place care home. In light of the current situation our carers have continued to work tirelessly to provide high quality, personalised care to the people living in our homes, and often go above and beyond the call of duty, which has a huge impact on people’s lives. They offer friendship and comfort to residents and their relatives, during what can be a very emotional time. We appreciate the work they do all year round, and especially in these unprecedented times”.
