Activities at Kernow House Care Home
Our Activities Coordinators organise varied and regular events. The activities that take place depend on what our residents tell us they are interested in and the feedback we get from their families. We currently have pop-up cafes where we socialise and maybe visit the hairdresser. We have regular live music events, a storyteller and visits from animals and we are often joined by families or friends during our social activities where they are always most welcome.
Living in Cornwall the surrounding countryside offers many beauty spots and we often have trips out to wherever our residents would like to go. At other times a walk to nearby shops or cafes is what we enjoy.
Louise is our hairdresser and she is with us twice a week. Louise also supports us during our weekly Namaste sessions where she offers hand massages in a relaxing environment. Every Thursday afternoon we have a time of worship supported by our local community. Our ice cream van, Kernow Kones, and our mobile pub, Kernow Keg, also make a weekly appearance. We have monthly clubs, when we play bingo or watch a film in our pop-up cinema. Residents on all units are invited to take part in a monthly Resident’s Meeting and they tell us what they would like.
Apart from these regular events, we also celebrate special occasions and often have musical entertainers to visit but we also make our own fun. All staff take part in fancy dress or charity events that we support and often what we do evolves through interaction between residents and care or activity staff. All this makes Kernow House a vibrant place to be where things happen both as group activities as well as on an individual level.
Bea Porup
Bea has many years of experience working in elderly care and both experience and training in dementia care. She has also worked extensively with people with Huntington's disease. Bea works closely with Sue, Jackie and our management team, nurses, carers and kitchen team to ensure our home has a vibrant environment with lots of events happening and varied opportunities for having both new and familiar experiences, making sure the people living here lead a rich and fulfilling life.

Life at Kernow House Care Home
Creature Feature
Creature Feature visited us with some of their animals. Nicola and Stephan brought Marbles, the rabbit, Donny, the tortoise and George, the guinea pig. We had lots of cuddles and enjoyed seeing the animals. Residents have told us, they would like to see and have contact with animals more often, so we already booked Creature Feature for a return visit next month, when they will bring a snake and a millipede. Can’t wait to feel a millipede on our arms. We are told it feels like being in a powerful shower.
Harvest Festival
It’s that time of the year, when the harvest has been brought in and we celebrate. We have had two celebrations. Firstly, a service with Revd. Mary Williamson from Church of England and secondly a musical celebration with Ruth Dymond. We also had new ‘Harvest Blessing’ decorations so it was very festive. Residents enjoy taking part in very traditional services with hymns, prayers and poems.
World Alzheimer’s Day
World Alzheimer’s Day at Kernow House was an opportunity to work with memory boxes. We are in the process of making memory boxes for anyone who benefits from having somewhere to keep treasures and items we can use for reminiscing. On Petherwin, we also selected music, which reminded us of special events and played records on the turntable. We will donate £35 to the Alzheimer’s Society. This is money raised from Dress Down Fridays.
Owl Show and Tell
Residents have told us, they would like more visits from animals so, ‘Owl Show and Tell’ paid us a visit. Graham and Jamie paid us a visit with Nina, the 5 year old barn owl. Nina was happy to be held and stroked and we thoroughly enjoyed her visit. Now we’re practising turning our own head right around because we think that is a fantastic ability to have.
Creative Mojo
We are really enjoying making our own art work and during the month of August, we had several art sessions, where we worked on a Van Gough Inspired Sunflowers kit from Creative Mojo. Many residents enjoy doing crafts and many others enjoy watching the finished pictures. This time we have made a colourful collage and we think it is very impressive.
Animal Therapy
Dude, the rescue pony, came to visit for some animal therapy. Dude, who is a five year old Shetland cross Dartmoor pony from The Hugs Foundation paid a visit. The foundation is a little charity that rescues, rehabilitates and rehomes ponies and horses. We enjoyed spending time with Dude in the carpark. He was really calm and liked being touched. Some residents fed him fresh grass from the lawn and he loved that. Dude will return in a few weeks, and then he will visit residents inside. Can’t wait.
