Activities at Lanercost House Care Home

Our dedicated Activities Coordinators offer a wide range of mentally and physically stimulating activities for residents and families to enjoy. There are regular outings in the minibus to places of interest, such as local cafes, garden centres and parks, as well as visits from entertainers, musicians and singers - and also from PAT dogs. We host various events, such as themed days, cheese & wine evenings, in addition to offering one-to-one activity sessions, including pampering, games and puzzles. Our activities staff strive to ensure residents participate in any way they can with activities that reflect their capabilities and interests.

Emily Stubbs

Head of Activities

I joined the Lanercost House family in June 2021 as a Care Assistant and then joined the activities team in May 2022.

I love bringing joy and fun to residents, relatives, and staff on a daily basis as well as planning and organising themed days, events, and celebrations.

I think the activities’ role is very important for Residents' well-being.  Whether they like to keep active with armchair exercises, join in with our weekly quiz or hop in the minibus for a day out - there is something for everyone.  I aim to ensure that each Resident's interests and hobbies are supported.

I am passionate about creative and sensory activities and I love to sing and dance together with Residents.  I love my job!

Fiesta time at Lanercost!

Staff and residents at Lanercost House care home in Carlisle celebrated Mexican Independence Day on September 16th in style by hosting a Mexican-inspired fiesta with mariachi music, pinata fun, and delicious Mexican food.

Residents and staff had fun finding out what was hidden in a pinata, tried to dance some traditional Mexican dances, and tasted Mexican food.

Head chef David Graham cooked up a feast of delicious Mexican dishes for everyone to enjoy including nachos, burritos, and tacos.

Karen Scaife, General Manager at Lanercost House, said: “Mexican Independence Day is always full of big flavours and a chance for us to celebrate all things Mexican. We’ve had fun listening to mariachi music and trying a bit of salsa dancing.”

Residents go camping!

Staff members at Lanercost House care home Priory Community in Carlisle have organized the themed afternoon `Welcome Autumn` camp for our residents. Everyone loved the afternoon of singing the most popular camping songs, sharing stories about camping traditions, and enjoying marshmallows with their favorite hot drinks.

Everyone had a fantastic time! We are celebrating life here at Lanercost House!

English National Ballet virtual event

We celebrated Last Night of the Proms virtually with members of English National Ballet’s Philharmonic Orchestra, led by Music Director Gavin Sutherland.

We listened and danced along as members of the orchestra took us on a magical, musical journey. English National Ballet Philharmonic is made up of many of the country’s top musicians, and boasts considerable experience in all forms of music-making. With insights and anecdotes into what it takes to conduct an orchestra for a world-class ballet company, this special concert got our feet tapping, arms waving and hearts singing!

It was a wonderful experience, enjoyed by all.

Scottish Design Galleries

Staff and residents were treated to a tour of the Scottish Design Galleries by Becca Clark and James Wylie, two members of V&A Dundee’s talented exhibitions team.  The presentation forms part of a series of six talks and virtual tours that V&A Dundee is hosting for Barchester Healthcare’s care homes and private hospitals across the UK.

V&A Dundee is Scotland’s design museum, it showcases Scotland’s outstanding design achievements and features world-class exhibitions alongside the permanent Scottish Design Galleries, and a changing programme of commissions, events and activities.

Every dog has its day!

Staff and residents at Barchester’s Lanercost House care home in Carlisle got up close and personal with some furry teddy friends and had a competition to name their new pet teddy’s, we also here at Lanercost House gave a donation of dog teddy’s and toys to Oak Tree Farm, Animals Charity in Wetheral. We were delighted to celebrate all the wonderful things about man’s best friend on National Dog Day, August 26th.

National Dog Day is an annual event to raise awareness of the number of dogs in rescue centres and to encourage people to adopt dogs from shelters and dog homes. Residents had a nice time reminiscing about pets they had.

General Manager, Karen Scaife said: “Our residents love animals and lots of them have owned dogs in the past so it was lovely to hear their stories about the different things their dogs had got up to.”
