Activities at Lawton Manor Care Home

We understand that the people we support have passions and interests that could be difficult to pursue after moving into a care home – but that doesn’t mean we don’t encourage them to try! Some hobbies can define a person, so our Activities Coordinators are dedicated to ensuring that everyone we support is able to do what makes them happy to the best of their abilities. Social events are organised with individual tastes in mind and with the idea that residents have the opportunity to try new and exciting things.

Chloe Cameron

Activities Coordinator

This is Chloe and she is our Activities Coordinator here at Lawton Manor. Her job is to physically and mentally stimulate our residents by offering a range of activities for them to enjoy. She wants to get everyone involved and make our home community and atmosphere as positive and welcoming as possible.

Making sure that our residents have things to do that they really enjoy doing is something that Chloe holds very close to her heart. It is so important to make sure that they are happy and enjoy all of the activities and events that we host for them. A lot of our residents also enjoy our special trips out on our Minibus as we create new, special memories together.

Life at Lawton Manor Care Home

Keeping in Touch with the Community

Due to the ongoing situation with COVID-19 residents have been unable to go out, meaning they have been unable to socialise with the local community. However, our friends at Sally Anna’s Day Nursery provided the residents with messages showing how they are thinking of them and drew some beautiful artwork for our residents to admire and enjoy.

Some of residents hung the artwork up in their rooms, which reminded them that they are not alone in this difficult time of uncertainty. The artwork was all done in bright colours to lift our residents’ spirits up, and some of these special drawings have been placed on the piano in the retreat for all to enjoy.

We would like to say a big thank you to Sally Anna’s for giving joy to our residents, during a time of uncertainty. We look forward to welcoming them back to Lawton Manor in the future, to thank them for all that they have done. In the meantime, to show their appreciation for what they have done, our residents’ will be sending their own artwork to Sally Anna’s as a way of saying thank you.

Off on a Safari

One of our residents Lesley Warburton was disappointed to miss out on a safari to South Africa with friends she has gone on holiday with for the past few years.

To compromise for this, here at Lawton Manor we decided to provide Lesley with a day out to Knowsley Safari on March 9th, to see the wonderful animals on display at the park. Lesley gave a wave to the lions, giraffes, hippos and rhinos. She was joined on this day full on adventure with fellow resident and friend Sheelagh Last. They all had a fantastic time, where they not only had the opportunity to go on the safari, but also got to see the Sealions perform. Lesley and Sheelagh came back with souvenirs from their trip out, both of them have fond memories of the day excursion.

Lesley said: “Thank you so much for making my wish come true, I was disappointed to not be able to go to South Africa, but seeing the animals at Knowsley was brilliant, and to spend the day with my friend Sheelagh made the occasion extra special. Thank you, Lawton Manor.”

Variety Show

During the weekend commencing February 29th, residents, family and friends had the opportunity to enjoy an evening of entertainment at the Round Table annual variety show at Alsager’s Civic Centre. The evening of entertainment was showcased from Saturday 29th February to Sunday 1st March.

Lawton Manor has been visiting the Round Table’s variety show for the past 15 years, and this year was extra special for one of our residents Colin Burgees, who was the former Mayor of Congleton in 2007. This outing gave Colin the opportunity to attend with other dignitaries within the Cheshire East area. It was fantastic for Colin to catch up with old friends and colleagues, in particular retired MP Lady Ann Winterton.

Once again, the show put on by the Round Table was excellent and included a number of singers, dancers, comedians and performances by local organisations.

Here at Lawton Manor we make sure that our residents feel a part of the community they are in, and for this we make sure they attend a number of local events, as many who reside at the home are from the local area.

Century Celebrations

Celebrations have been in full swing at Lawton Manor, as one of our residents reaches her centenary in style.

Alice was joined by staff and other residents as she received a telegram from the Queen in recognition of her landmark birthday. A champagne reception was held at the home and guests enjoyed a special birthday cake made by our Head Chef, Carol Knowles. Alice was well known in the community as the ‘milk lady’, as she used to deliver milk in Alsager. She was still so active when she came into Lawton Manor, where she enjoying a new chapter of her life.

Popping Out for Afternoon Tea

Residents enjoyed popping out for afternoon tea at the Old Saw Mill in Congleton, a centre opened in 2016 that was created with the aim of providing a unique space in the fabric of Congleton’s community. They enjoyed delicious homemade cakes and sandwiches and resident Sheelagh Last reminisced about her time as the manager at Congleton library and kept everyone amused with her stories.

Residents were able to learn about how the project was driven by The Congleton Partnership and Congleton Sustainability Group. A highlight for the residents was getting to try the famous Congleton apple juice, made on the premises, which went down a treat. Furthermore, from the visit residents discovered that the Old Saw Mill was visited by HRH Prince Charles and Camilla, The Duchess of Cornwall in 2018, where the Royal couple had the opportunity to meet and learn about the great things The Old Saw Mill has to offer and of course taste the apple juice.

Love Is In the Air at Lawton Manor

Staff, residents and guests started their celebration of love with a family and friends valentine’s evening on Tuesday 11th February. The evening started off with a three-course romantic dinner with a selection of drinks. After the meal, it was time for our residents to take to the dance floor to celebrate all things love.

On Valentine's Day residents enjoyed a day full of romance, with their messages of love on our Valentine’s tree, themed lunch followed by entertainment and singing from Jon and Pam Baddeley.

General Manager, Rebecca Whitehouse said: “This week has shown us all that you are never too old for love. We’ve had a whole range of treats and Valentine’s themed fun for the individuals that live here and their guests and we have enjoyed every moment of it!”

Also, Mavis a resident at the home  and her husband Ray celebrated their 76th Valentine’s Day together. Mavis and Ray Turner were childhood sweethearts who met at school when they were teenagers and married in 1953. Last year was the first time Ray had given Mavis a Valentine, he choose one of the hearts from our Valentine’s tree and wrote the message ‘At last X’ . This year Ray and Mavis enjoyed the Valentine’s evening, they danced the night away.   Residents have knitted and made hearts for our Valente’s Tree.
