Activities at Lochduhar Care Home
Activities are the cornerstone of a wholesome home experience and our Activities Coordinators are always putting their creative minds to the test by organising new and exciting social events for residents to partake in. Of course, we take into account the likes and dislikes of those we support, so if someone doesn’t feel like trying something new, there will always be something on offer to reflect their personal interests. For the people who may just prefer some peace and quiet instead, we also offer one-to-one time that can be enjoyed with a nice cup of coffee or just a simple chat – whatever they desire.

Sally has been in the care sector since 1998. Sally joined the Lochduhar team in 2018 as a care assistant.
Sally is very passionate about the care she provides and the welfare of the residents. Working as a care assistant Sally was able to get to know the residents wants and needs to provide excellent person centred care to each individual. Then in 2020 Sally found the opportunity to become Head of Activities. Sally feels that she provides a different side to herself to promote an active and inclusive lifestyle through her role as Head of Activities.

Picnic at the Crichton Gardens
We made the most of the sunny weather and took a trip to the Crichton Gardens for a picnic. This seems to be a popular place for some of our residents to visit. We first took a seat on a picnic bench, we unpacked our picnic which was kindly made by our kitchen team. We had a selection of sandwiches, crisps, some fruit, biscuits, fruit cake and some fruit juice. We sat and chatted about the many specimen of trees and plants. The Crichton offers a stunning location to take a leisurely walk and is perfect for a picnic. We saw some dogs being walked and some birds. We then took a walk around the gardens, we had a lovely time. We then headed off to the ice-cream shop for some delicious ice-cream.
International cheesecake day
We celebrated international cheesecake day by making our very own cheese cakes, in our Memory Lane Community. We crushed some biscuits, melted some butter and combined the two together. Our head chef Evelyn, made us the cream, which we put on top of the biscuit and then we cut up some strawberries and mixed them with some strawberry jelly and put that on the top. When we had finished making the cheesecake, we made a cuppa and enjoyed tasting our creation. The residents were so happy with the end results.
A Trip to the Park
The residents at Lochduhar have enjoyed trips out for picnics in the park recently.
We have quite a few parks in Dumfries, so we have plenty to choose from. This time we chose to visit The Crichton Gardens, which is open to the public all year round. The Crichton offers a stunning location to take leisurely strolls and picnics. We sometimes see dog walkers and other people having walks and picnics too.
Our delicious picnic was made by our wonderful kitchen team and there was plenty to choose from.
We then took a short walk around some of the gardens, before heading home.
Moffat Ukulele Group
We recently had a visit from Moffat Ukulele group, this group is very popular with our residents.
They play all types of music and the residents like to sing along, tap their feet and some of us were
up and dancing. We find that music lifts our spirits and makes us smile and also reminisce of the music we enjoy.
Sometimes the group bring their dog Ben and of course the residents enjoy seeing him.
We had some refreshments, of home made cakes made by our kitchen team and a glass of wine.
Evening walks
In a recent Residents meeting some of our residents requested that we have some evening walks, now the weather was starting to get better. The activities team got together with the residents and they chose dates and times to go. We are near the old railway track, which we call the cycle path and that takes us from our home round into a circle and back to the home. On the way we saw some lovely gardens, all neat and tidy with colourful flowers. We also saw a few dogs on the way, and they were excited to see us as we were them.
Picnic in the Park
Our residents chose to have a trip out in the minibus to Dock Park.
We took a stroll along the river bank, looking at the river running and the birds, washing themselves and searching for fish. We looked at the blossom on the trees and the colourful wild flowers. We sat at a bench and opened our picnic, which was made by our kitchen team. We enjoyed some sausage rolls, sandwiches, crisps, cherry tomatoes and some tunnock tea cakes, we enjoyed some nice cold lemonade too. We then went for another walk on the other side of the park and into the café, where we enjoyed a delicious ice-cream.
