Activities at Lochduhar Care Home

Activities are the cornerstone of a wholesome home experience and our Activities Coordinators are always putting their creative minds to the test by organising new and exciting social events for residents to partake in. Of course, we take into account the likes and dislikes of those we support, so if someone doesn’t feel like trying something new, there will always be something on offer to reflect their personal interests. For the people who may just prefer some peace and quiet instead, we also offer one-to-one time that can be enjoyed with a nice cup of coffee or just a simple chat – whatever they desire.

Life at Lochduhar Care Home

Keeping fit with Joe Wicks

Residents of Lochduhar enjoy their regular weekly keep fit exercises including seated armchair with virtual sessions watching Joe Wicks.  Residents have fun and keep active together before enjoying refreshments.  Exercise is part of the homes varied life enrichment calendar.

Easter fun at Lochduhar

Staff and residents at Lochduhar in Dumfries were busy scheduling a variety of Easter themed activities for all residents to enjoy during the holiday.

In the UK Easter is one of the major Christian festivals of the year. It is full of customs and celebrations. However, Easter in Britain has its beginnings long before the arrival of Christianity. Many theologians believe Easter itself is named after the Anglo-Saxon goddess of the dawn and spring - Eostre

Over the years, many Easter traditions have taken shape, everything from chocolate bunnies to Easter egg hunts.

To celebrate Easter in style, the home was decorated with Easter eggs, bunnies and colourful banners to bring positivism and holiday spirit. Team members and residents also created a beautiful Ester display to cheer everyone up.

Throughout the day, everyone got involved in a variety of fun-filled activities, from enjoying hot cross buns and making Easter wreath to quizzes, poetry and puzzles.

The residents had the opportunity to learn more about the Easter traditions and reminiscence about how they used to celebrate the day.

Spring planting

Green-fingered Residents at Lochduhar enjoyed an afternoon of planting in preparation for the summer weather. As the sun began to make an appearance this week, Residents decided to showcase their passion for gardening by planting some sunflower and spring bulbs in the pots ready for the garden and their hanging baskets.

Indoor reunion joy

For residents at Lochduhar Care Home in Dumfries, the long awaited reunion with two family members has become a reality, as two named visitors are now allowed to visit each resident in their bedroom.  Family members must visit separately, at different times.

There has been much anticipation of this moment by families and residents alike.  Guidance was issued by the Scottish Government at the end of February and Barchester Healthcare, who run Lochduhar Care Home, is proceeding with a safe and cautious approach to visiting. Strict protocols are in place with all visitors required to have a negative Lateral Flow Device test result before being allowed into the home, and infection control measures and social distancing in place for every visit.

World Book Day

Residents and staff embraced their inner book worm for World Book Day this week. They enjoyed chatting and reminiscing about their favourite books and chose a new book to read from a selection provided by our local Book Club service.

World Wildlife Day

The 3rd March 2021 was World Wildlife Day. Residents enjoyed celebrating the world's plants and animals whilst thinking about issues that impact on our wildlife.

Conversation flowed while resident, Cameron, and Maggie, our Activities Coordinator, filled up the bird feeders around the home. We will all enjoy watching the birds visit our gardens at Lochduhar in the coming days
