Activities at Lucerne House Care Home

At Lucerne House our person-centred activity programme has been tailored to suit the residents living in our home. It is constantly developing due to the direct feedback from our residents and enables them to take part in existing hobbies and new tasks that aim to stimulate creativity, intellect, physical ability and improve well being. With music groups, pub outings, cooking, gardening, one to one time, entertainers, quiz's, bingo and more, there is never a shortage of things to do.

We also have external providers who visit the home. We have Rachel Sherring who provides Yoga Sessions, Lorrain Christopher who is available every Wednesday and Thursday for hair appointments in our on site salon, Sharon Rees who visits on a Wednesday to provide massage therapy sessions in the comfort of your chair and regular Church Services which do include a monthly Holy Communion. We are always open to new suggestions, so if you do have any, our activities team will always be happy to listen.

Alex Petersen

Activities Coordinator

I have been at Lucerne House since November 2011. I started in the kitchen before moving to the Activities Team. I have a background in music and theatre and was very happy to be able to share this with residents in the home. After a short while, I was promoted to Head of Activities, and earned my NAPA level 2 qualification in Activity Provision.

In the role of Head of Activities, I am focused on ensuring that residents can continue to enjoy existing hobbies and interests, but also pursue new avenues of stimulation and activity. I am always looking to bring new experiences and means of engagement to the home, be that through massage therapy, yoga, engaging with the local community or many other things. At Lucerne House, our person-centred approach allows us to make every resident feel valued and comfortable enough to express themselves however they see fit.

My goal is to ensure that every person living at Lucerne House feels confident enough to make independent decisions and that each of them have a robust choice of activities and interests to engage with. I am always open to suggestions, so if you do have any, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Life at Lucerne House Care Home

Happy Birthday!

In September one of our residents, Bessie, celebrated a landmark Birthday, reaching the fabulous age of 108. Bessie has celebrated the day with family and enjoyed an amazing cake, baked and decorated by the head of our nursing community, Ron. Bessie has had an amazing life and we are honoured to have shared a part of it with her.

Roald Dahl Day

Residents at Lucerne House had a wonderful time, celebrating Roald Dahl Day. Residents discovered golden tickets in their rooms, inviting them to Willy Wonka’s Coffee morning which was hosted by Willy Wonka and his oompa loompa. Everyone had a great time, tasting various sweets, chocolates, donuts and treats. Willy Wonka then challenged the group to a Roald Dahl and Chocolate quiz which really got our brains going.

In the afternoon, we switched stories and focused on James and the Giant Peach which saw a screening of the film with peach mocktails and peach topped cupcakes which had been prepared by our residents the day before.

Everyone said what fun it was and loved meeting Willy Wonka, his oompa loompa and celebrating the day.

Assisting with lunch preparations

During our recent cooking group, our residents have been assisting with lunch preparations by baking ciabatta bread to compliment the delicious tomato soup, made by our head chef. We have had a great time, kneading and using a rolling pin to beat the bread which is great for physical activity and a bit of stress relief. The bread was delicious and everyone has said how they enjoyed the session.

Decorating with flowers

We love our flower arranging activities at Lucerne House, with regular groups getting together to prune and arrange various displays. In our most recent flower arranging event, we decided to make the most of the summer flowers we had by decorating our dining room. It seemed a fitting way to say goodbye to the summer and prepare for Autumn, where we look forward to doing more with autumnal flowers and foliage in our home.

National Marine Aquarium Visit

What an amazing day out we have had, visiting the National Marine Aquarium. We were completely taken by the amazing displays and captivating array of fish and marine life on show. The shark and sting ray tank was probably our favourite to look at. It was amazing, watching the different marine life and sharks swimming right up close and even over our heads. After all that fun we were craving something sweet, so stopped by our local KFC on the way home to enjoy an ice cream in the mini bus. Our residents have said they have had a fantastic time and are going to encourage other residents, staying with us, to join us on our next trip.

Retail therapy trip to Exeter High Street

We enjoyed some retail therapy on a recent outing as our residents took a trip to Exeter High Street. We stopped by the library to return some books and borrow more, bought some bits and bobs in the supermarket, took in the sights at the Cathedral and then enjoyed a donut and coffee in the Guild Hall. Our residents have said they really enjoyed the morning and look forward to returning again soon.
