Activities at Lucerne House Care Home
At Lucerne House our person-centred activity programme has been tailored to suit the residents living in our home. It is constantly developing due to the direct feedback from our residents and enables them to take part in existing hobbies and new tasks that aim to stimulate creativity, intellect, physical ability and improve well being. With music groups, pub outings, cooking, gardening, one to one time, entertainers, quiz's, bingo and more, there is never a shortage of things to do.
We also have external providers who visit the home. We have Rachel Sherring who provides Yoga Sessions, Lorrain Christopher who is available every Wednesday and Thursday for hair appointments in our on site salon, Sharon Rees who visits on a Wednesday to provide massage therapy sessions in the comfort of your chair and regular Church Services which do include a monthly Holy Communion. We are always open to new suggestions, so if you do have any, our activities team will always be happy to listen.

Alex Petersen
I have been at Lucerne House since November 2011. I started in the kitchen before moving to the Activities Team. I have a background in music and theatre and was very happy to be able to share this with residents in the home. After a short while, I was promoted to Head of Activities, and earned my NAPA level 2 qualification in Activity Provision.
In the role of Head of Activities, I am focused on ensuring that residents can continue to enjoy existing hobbies and interests, but also pursue new avenues of stimulation and activity. I am always looking to bring new experiences and means of engagement to the home, be that through massage therapy, yoga, engaging with the local community or many other things. At Lucerne House, our person-centred approach allows us to make every resident feel valued and comfortable enough to express themselves however they see fit.
My goal is to ensure that every person living at Lucerne House feels confident enough to make independent decisions and that each of them have a robust choice of activities and interests to engage with. I am always open to suggestions, so if you do have any, please do not hesitate to let me know.
Activities and Events Partnerships

Halloween at Lucerne House
We have had an excellent time this Halloween. Residents have been busy, making decorations and had a good laugh carving pumpkins. These were on display for our trick or treating event on Halloween evening. It was lovely to see so many families and children join us. Everyone received sweets and the grownups gained a free entry into our Christmas raffle.
Running along side this has been our Virtual Halloween Costume and fancy dress competition. This is now in its third year and has seen a record amount of entries. Our residents and relatives had the difficult job of picking five winners. They said that if they could, they would have awarded everyone as a winner because they were all so good. We congratulate the winners and thank you for getting involved, it means so much to our residents to be able to connect with the community and by joining in, you have helped them achieve that.
All of the entries are available to view on our Facebook page. Click the link above to go there now, where you can also see more of what we have been up to.

Festive preparations at Lucerne House
In preparation for the festive season, our residents have been in our Memory Lane community kitchen again, this time making jam tarts.
The pastry was homemade and the recipe used will be recreated, later in the year, for mince pies. These will perfectly complement our festive activities, including our Christmas market on Tuesday 12th December.
Our residents have had a great time and, once cooled, they tasted and shared their creations, which everyone agreed were delicious.
That same week, it was all hands on stations again, at our crafts session. We were delighted to be joined by Amber, Kirsty from activities daughter and her niece Faye, who are both on half term.
Together, with our residents they have been making more of the tree decorations, knitted items and even some Halloween crafts to decorate our reception with.
There was lots of laughter and fun. Amber and Faye are welcome back anytime and we thank them for all their help.
With Christmas just around the corner, we have got lots of exciting activities planned for our residents, visitors, staff and local community to enjoy.

Exeter Police and community choir
What a fantastic afternoon we have had in October. Music had once again filled our Memory Lane community, this time it came courtesy of the Exeter Police and Community choir.
We were singing along to an array of songs, all wonderfully performed by the group.
Our residents were all saying they really enjoyed it and hoped they would be coming back. We are pleased to let them and our followers know that the Exeter Police and Community choir will be returning to us during the festive period in December.

The men are at it again
We’ve been having a great time at our Gentlemen's club, with our most recent gathering being held in our Memory Lane community.
We have been tinkering with various projects over the last few months, which have included building a spitfire air fix model. Our sessions are full of laughter, good banter and some great creative flair and ingenuity.
Our plane is nearly finished, with the first coat of paint being applied. Everyone remarked on how good it was looking and our men have said they all enjoyed the time together.
Our next session should see us finish our air fix set and move on to our Meccano set which just needs the finishing touches.
Our gentlemen’s sessions are a great way for our male residents to bond, share stories and keep themselves busy and active.

Alphington Brownies visit Lucerne House
Thank you to Alphington Brownies for a fantastic evening during their visit in October.
It was lovely to learn about all of your badges, hearing the brownies promise and about your favourite activities with brownies.
We are so grateful for the hyacinth bulbs you have gifted to our residents, which are now sitting proudly in our residents rooms and for joining us for cake and refreshments
We will look forward to our bulbs flowering in December and you are all welcome back anytime.

Knit & Natter with the community
Each month, our residents have been getting involved with our local community Knit & Natter group. Each session we a lovely time at St Michael's Alphington chatting with our neighbours and supporting their knitting project.
On our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/BarchesterLucerneHouse/ ,you will see our posts where we have been making knitted squares to contribute to blankets, being sent to Moldova. We are so enthused to hear that, with our contribution, the community has sent 16 blankets over and are continuing to make more.
During our recent session, with the community, our residents haven't been nattering about all things Alphington and knitting more squares for the cause.
We have also began a new project, knitting little hats as Christmas tree decorations. Our wonderful friends, from the group this morning are also going to knit some decorations. These will all be available at our Lucerne Christmas Market, being held in December.
