Activities at Lucerne House Care Home

At Lucerne House our person-centred activity programme has been tailored to suit the residents living in our home. It is constantly developing due to the direct feedback from our residents and enables them to take part in existing hobbies and new tasks that aim to stimulate creativity, intellect, physical ability and improve well being. With music groups, pub outings, cooking, gardening, one to one time, entertainers, quiz's, bingo and more, there is never a shortage of things to do.

We also have external providers who visit the home. We have Rachel Sherring who provides Yoga Sessions, Lorrain Christopher who is available every Wednesday and Thursday for hair appointments in our on site salon, Sharon Rees who visits on a Wednesday to provide massage therapy sessions in the comfort of your chair and regular Church Services which do include a monthly Holy Communion. We are always open to new suggestions, so if you do have any, our activities team will always be happy to listen.

Alex Petersen

Activities Coordinator

I have been at Lucerne House since November 2011. I started in the kitchen before moving to the Activities Team. I have a background in music and theatre and was very happy to be able to share this with residents in the home. After a short while, I was promoted to Head of Activities, and earned my NAPA level 2 qualification in Activity Provision.

In the role of Head of Activities, I am focused on ensuring that residents can continue to enjoy existing hobbies and interests, but also pursue new avenues of stimulation and activity. I am always looking to bring new experiences and means of engagement to the home, be that through massage therapy, yoga, engaging with the local community or many other things. At Lucerne House, our person-centred approach allows us to make every resident feel valued and comfortable enough to express themselves however they see fit.

My goal is to ensure that every person living at Lucerne House feels confident enough to make independent decisions and that each of them have a robust choice of activities and interests to engage with. I am always open to suggestions, so if you do have any, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Ducklings at Lucerne House

After the success of hatching chickens in 2022, residents have loved our latest hatching event with Ducklings at Lucerne House. Our feathered friends have been getting to know many of our staff and residents as they visited them in their rooms and our communal lounges.

Everyone has had a great time, cuddling up to them and feeling them have a gentle nibble at their fingers.

As the ducks grow older, we will look at seeing how they fare with swimming.

St. Patrick's Day

Happy St Patrick's Day to you all. Our residents have had a busy day. They started by decorating cakes, sharing poems, dancing and telling jokes. This afternoon all eyes were on the Gold Cup at Cheltenham. Residents and staff all picked a horse out of a hat and enjoyed, crisps, cake and guineas whilst watching the action. Congratulations to Vera for winning.

Lego at Lucerne House

Rodney, one of our residents has had a very active life with working on spitfires, learning judo, supporting his family, driving and later as an inspector on the buses for the now closed, Devon General.

He has kept his passion for the buses over the years with his wife and him often reminiscing about the "good old days" at the firm and also enjoying books and conversations about buses.

To keep that enjoyment alive, Rodney, along with his wife and friends, living at Lucerne house, have helped to build a Lego double decker bus this morning. They have had great fun and it stirred lots of conversation and laughter. We will look to use more Lego in the future at Lucerne House with it being a great activity and item for anyone from the ages of 0 to 99.

A Nice Surprise

Jeanette a resident of ours at Lucerne House, was recently asked what could we do as a special treat for her. She said she would love a special steak tea but stated, “I'll never get that”. Well recently, at Lucerne House, Jeanette was surprised with exactly what she wanted. A sirloin steak cooked rare with onion rings, mushroom and a salad.

She was overwhelmed by the gesture and said it was absolutely delicious.

Doing things that make our residents smile and fill their days with joy is what we are all about at Lucerne House with trips to the pub, special meals, tasty treats,  flowers delivered to their rooms and more.

To the Pub!

With the damper weather clearing recently, it was the perfect chance to visit one of our favourite places which is so conveniently on our door step, the New Inn Alphington. Our residents were welcomed and served with the usual high standard of hospitality and have enjoyed a little tipple and a good laugh with each other. We love getting out and about at Lucerne House and have lots more outings planned in the coming days, weeks and months.

New to Lucerne House

This month, we welcomed a new group to Lucerne House. Welcome DOGLEG. Our residents had a great time with Steve and Tracey of DOGLEG who totally captivated us with their wonderful guitar, violin and amazing harmonised singing. Residents said they were absolutely brilliant and are really looking forward to their next performance with us.
