Activities at Lucerne House Care Home
At Lucerne House our person-centred activity programme has been tailored to suit the residents living in our home. It is constantly developing due to the direct feedback from our residents and enables them to take part in existing hobbies and new tasks that aim to stimulate creativity, intellect, physical ability and improve well being. With music groups, pub outings, cooking, gardening, one to one time, entertainers, quiz's, bingo and more, there is never a shortage of things to do.
We also have external providers who visit the home. We have Rachel Sherring who provides Yoga Sessions, Lorrain Christopher who is available every Wednesday and Thursday for hair appointments in our on site salon, Sharon Rees who visits on a Wednesday to provide massage therapy sessions in the comfort of your chair and regular Church Services which do include a monthly Holy Communion. We are always open to new suggestions, so if you do have any, our activities team will always be happy to listen.
Alex Petersen
I have been at Lucerne House since November 2011. I started in the kitchen before moving to the Activities Team. I have a background in music and theatre and was very happy to be able to share this with residents in the home. After a short while, I was promoted to Head of Activities, and earned my NAPA level 2 qualification in Activity Provision.
In the role of Head of Activities, I am focused on ensuring that residents can continue to enjoy existing hobbies and interests, but also pursue new avenues of stimulation and activity. I am always looking to bring new experiences and means of engagement to the home, be that through massage therapy, yoga, engaging with the local community or many other things. At Lucerne House, our person-centred approach allows us to make every resident feel valued and comfortable enough to express themselves however they see fit.
My goal is to ensure that every person living at Lucerne House feels confident enough to make independent decisions and that each of them have a robust choice of activities and interests to engage with. I am always open to suggestions, so if you do have any, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Life at Lucerne House Care Home
A Flavour of Scandinavia
This month, as chosen by Roger, we had another cultural evening, this time celebrating Scandinavian countries.
To prepare for this, Roger and Vera took a trip to IKEA today.
Our first order of business was lunch, so we had to sample the famous, Swedish meatballs, followed by Daim cake with cream. It was very tasty and a dish we will look to incorporate into our evening.
We then spent time following the "endless" arrows around the showrooms. There were some amazing displays on show and some lovely items that caught our eye.
We finished with a some shopping in the food market, where we have grabbed some of the essentials, ready for our cultural evening.
A real highlight for Roger was having a go in the revolving door. Which he found so entertaining he went around, about six times, much to the entertainment of himself and the on lookers, waiting to go into IKEA.
The next week, it was time for our Scandinavian culture evening.
To kick things off, residents and staff have been creating flag decorations, to place around our room, ready for the evenings events.
Then, in the afternoon, Roger, the producer of the Scandinavian culture idea, has been busy making smorrebrod which are open top sandwiches with different toppings.
We made:-
Beef with red cabbage, pickle, carrot and horseradish.
Chicken with lettuce, peppers, cucumber and mayo
Prawns with lettuce, cucumber and mayo
And so many more that were all trayed up and displayed for all to admire as they arrived this evening.
We followed up our Smorrebrod with a choice of either Daim cake or cinnamon rolls, served with ice cream and a whipped cream topping.
Everyone has said how lovely it all looked and tasted and we thank Roger for coming up with and helping to produce such an amazing event.
Coronation Celebrations at Lucerne House
We have had a great time over the Coronation weekend, with many residents, visitors and staff all cheering and praising His Majesty, King Charles III.
On Friday morning, residents, staff and visitors enjoyed, refreshments, cake and a singsong of famous British artists, finished with a recital of God Save the King. In the, we have been putting our culinary skills to the test, making coronation chicken sandwiches. These were delicious and will be shared around the home, for tea this evening.
Saturday was all about raising a glass, waving a flag while watching the proceedings on TV in our communal lounges.
Then, on Sunday, we started with a trip to St Michael's Alphington for their Coronation service. Thank you to Reverend Mike Partridge, Bev Jordan and to Alphington community for inviting us to contribute to today's event.
In the afternoon, our attention turned to our own Coronation celebration. Residents, staff and visors, were tapping their feet and singing our hearts out with Sounds Easy all whilst enjoying refreshments and cake. Then we all enjoyed a fantastic BBQ.
Thank you to all of our wonderful family, friends, relatives and loved ones who have joined us today, to our amazing kitchen team for their amazing efforts with the food, to Ron’s Kitchen Delights for another amazing cake, which was a real show stopper and to our teams, over this weekend, in the home, for all their help and support, helping our residents to have an amazing time, celebrating His Majesty, King Charles III, Coronation.
Lucerne House On Tour
Look out Exeter! Lucerne House is on tour.
Vera and Mary have had a great time today, taking in all the sights and sounds of Exeter High Street. We kicked off with a stop off at Wilko before re fuelling at Krispy Kreme donut cafe. Then it was Primark for a browse where we found a very, very small hat.
Next it was Marks and Sparks for a stock up from their food hall and finally, what would a trip into town be without lunch, which we thoroughly enjoyed at a whetherspoons pub.
In the midst of all shopping, we found an amazing throne, erected in the shopping centre for King Charles III, Coronation. We had to have a picture with it.
Mary and Vera particularly noted all of the change in the town with many shops sadly no longer operating. It didn't dampen our spirits and they have both said they absolutely loved it.
Ladies Day at Aintree event
To mark ladies day at Aintree for this weekend’s horse racing, residents have been getting into the spirit of the occasion. In the morning, we have been making, homemade, head fascinators, which were very colourful and creative. Residents said they had a lot of fun and reminded them of past events in their lives, such as weddings and summer parties.
This afternoon, everyone has enjoyed scones with cream and jam which went perfectly while watching the racing in the comfort of their rooms and our, relaxing, communal lounges.
Easter celebrations
We've had a brilliant time celebrating Easter at Lucerne House. We started with scrap booking and crafts where we made a special Easter bunny wreath. This was complimented with tasty hot cross buns with lashings of butter. Then our very own Easter Bunny, Kirsty, has been delivering our Easter eggs, generously purchased by our management team, Sally Coletti and Grace Leeds, for all residents and staff at Lucerne House.
Then, in the afternoon, we have had lots of toe tapping fun with residents, visitors and staff enjoying another brilliant music performance from Sounds Easy, which was accompanied by delicious chocolate treats and refreshments.
A special thank you to Carmen Grace from The Prop Factory for a generous donation of one of her Easter Egg props, which our residents have loved posing with. Carmen has been going viral ever since her gingerbread house, at Christmas 2022, made headlines and news alerts right across the globe. An amazing treat to receive this and another massive thank you from all of us.
Philippine’s celebration evening
What an amazing evening we had last night, at the first of several planned, culture celebration evening's. Our first was a celebration of Filipino culture. Residents, visitors and staff have all enjoyed traditional food prepared by Ron Jampil, RGN and Head of our Ide community who runs his own catering business Ron’s Kitchen Delights. The food was delicious with everyone enjoying various treats including one of his amazing cakes. Staff from the Philippines all wore traditional dress with the males wearing Barong Tagalog and the females wearing Filipiniana. This was perfectly complimented by traditional Filipino music. It was a fantastic evening and everyone said how wonderful it all was. Sally Coletti, General Manager at Lucerne House, thanked everyone for coming and for all of Ron's and our staff, from the Philippines, efforts.
