Activities at Lucerne House Care Home

At Lucerne House our person-centred activity programme has been tailored to suit the residents living in our home. It is constantly developing due to the direct feedback from our residents and enables them to take part in existing hobbies and new tasks that aim to stimulate creativity, intellect, physical ability and improve well being. With music groups, pub outings, cooking, gardening, one to one time, entertainers, quiz's, bingo and more, there is never a shortage of things to do.

We also have external providers who visit the home. We have Rachel Sherring who provides Yoga Sessions, Lorrain Christopher who is available every Wednesday and Thursday for hair appointments in our on site salon, Sharon Rees who visits on a Wednesday to provide massage therapy sessions in the comfort of your chair and regular Church Services which do include a monthly Holy Communion. We are always open to new suggestions, so if you do have any, our activities team will always be happy to listen.

Alex Petersen

Activities Coordinator

I have been at Lucerne House since November 2011. I started in the kitchen before moving to the Activities Team. I have a background in music and theatre and was very happy to be able to share this with residents in the home. After a short while, I was promoted to Head of Activities, and earned my NAPA level 2 qualification in Activity Provision.

In the role of Head of Activities, I am focused on ensuring that residents can continue to enjoy existing hobbies and interests, but also pursue new avenues of stimulation and activity. I am always looking to bring new experiences and means of engagement to the home, be that through massage therapy, yoga, engaging with the local community or many other things. At Lucerne House, our person-centred approach allows us to make every resident feel valued and comfortable enough to express themselves however they see fit.

My goal is to ensure that every person living at Lucerne House feels confident enough to make independent decisions and that each of them have a robust choice of activities and interests to engage with. I am always open to suggestions, so if you do have any, please do not hesitate to let me know.

25th Anniversary: Part II

Lucerne House had a feeling of excitement and celebration on Friday 20th October; the home was celebrating Barchester's 25th anniversary. There were cakes and goodies in our reception area, tours of our home and also a fantastic party in the afternoon with a performance from 'Sounds Easy'.

Friends from Across the Sea

Friends from Across the Sea

Everyone at Lucerne was delighted to meet a group of students and teachers from Bréquigny High School in Rennes, France. Every year, the school plans an education programme for students who want to become health carers in a retirement home.

The group joined us on Wednesday 11th October at 2:00 p.m. to present a selection of activities, from music quizzes and card games to making traditional French crêpes.

We are very grateful to them for visiting us and look forward to seeing them again!

25 Years of Barchester

Residents, relatives and staff at Lucerne House had a fantastic afternoon recently, creating a banner for our 25 Years of Barchester anniversary celebration. Residents used various coloured cards and decorated them with glue, glitter, stickers and paint. Once these had dried, we cut them out to spell '25 Years of Barchester' and this is now hanging proudly in our reception area, ready for our big celebration day.

Resident Ambassador

Resident Ambassador

Meet our Resident Ambassador at Lucerne House, Brenda Hurford. Brenda has been living at Lucerne since November 2016 and has since become co-chairwomen of our residents committee, a great person for other residents in the home to bring feedback and suggestions to regarding the living experience in the home. Brenda has a background in the care setting as a specialist inspector for the Care Quality Commission. In her role as ambassador Brenda will have input into the home newsletter, be involved with the interview process, be introduced to any prospective residents & relatives who may wish to ask what life is like at Lucerne and attend local community events and forums on behalf of the residents of Lucerne House.

Giving back to the community

Giving back to the community

One of the things we hold dearest to us at Lucerne House is our relationship with our local community. We have some fantastic friends we have made over the years which include the local church. Each Friday morning friends and supporters of the church host a “Chatterbox café” in the local village hall. “Chatterbox” is a great way of meeting new friends and catching up with old ones over cake, scones and a hot drink.

We have been attending the group for many years now and have always wanted to contribute and we are now very pleased to be supplying the cheese scones on the second week of each month. We had a great time making them this week and look forward to continuing with our support of such a fantastic group.

One-to-One Time

One-to-One Time

At Lucerne House, we have many favourite group activities, such as yoga, musical memories, balloon buddies and tea parties, but we also have a great one-to-one program as well.

For the past few months, one resident has really been enjoying regular games of draughts in his bedroom. It has been a great means of cognitive and social stimulation and also really raises well-being and self-esteem, especially when he wins, which is every time.

One-to-one time is offered to every resident at Lucerne House and occurs regularly throughout each week.
