Activities at Lucerne House Care Home

At Lucerne House our person-centred activity programme has been tailored to suit the residents living in our home. It is constantly developing due to the direct feedback from our residents and enables them to take part in existing hobbies and new tasks that aim to stimulate creativity, intellect, physical ability and improve well being. With music groups, pub outings, cooking, gardening, one to one time, entertainers, quiz's, bingo and more, there is never a shortage of things to do.

We also have external providers who visit the home. We have Rachel Sherring who provides Yoga Sessions, Lorrain Christopher who is available every Wednesday and Thursday for hair appointments in our on site salon, Sharon Rees who visits on a Wednesday to provide massage therapy sessions in the comfort of your chair and regular Church Services which do include a monthly Holy Communion. We are always open to new suggestions, so if you do have any, our activities team will always be happy to listen.

Alex Petersen

Activities Coordinator

I have been at Lucerne House since November 2011. I started in the kitchen before moving to the Activities Team. I have a background in music and theatre and was very happy to be able to share this with residents in the home. After a short while, I was promoted to Head of Activities, and earned my NAPA level 2 qualification in Activity Provision.

In the role of Head of Activities, I am focused on ensuring that residents can continue to enjoy existing hobbies and interests, but also pursue new avenues of stimulation and activity. I am always looking to bring new experiences and means of engagement to the home, be that through massage therapy, yoga, engaging with the local community or many other things. At Lucerne House, our person-centred approach allows us to make every resident feel valued and comfortable enough to express themselves however they see fit.

My goal is to ensure that every person living at Lucerne House feels confident enough to make independent decisions and that each of them have a robust choice of activities and interests to engage with. I am always open to suggestions, so if you do have any, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Life at Lucerne House Care Home

A Way with Words

A Way with Words

Residents at Lucerne House have been testing their creative abilities recently with the intellectually stimulating game, 'A Way with Words'. The formula is very similar to that of Countdown, which is televised on Channel 4. Residents take turns to pick consonants and vowels before trying to make the longest word possible. Staff have also been putting their own abilities to the test and it is proving to be a great means of engagement for everyone in the home.

Creative Minds

Creative Minds

Over the past three months, residents at Lucerne House have been completing an art project to decorate a wall in our Memory Lane community. Each month, Maria Bowers from Creative Minds, has been supporting the group to create a collage for our musical-themed corridor.

It has been great fun and very stimulating to create a piece of art work as a group and to have it on display for all to enjoy.

Thank you to Maria Bowers from Creative Minds for all her support.

Memory Walk

The wet and windy weather on Sunday 3rd September didn’t dampen our spirits as we set off on this year’s Memory Walk, held in Exeter, in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society.

John Hill, one of our relatives at Lucerne House, along with his daughters, Debra & Sarah, and Bumbles the dog, were joined by Alex Petersen (Head of Activities) & Scott Foot (Activities Coordinator), to embark on a 6.5km walk along Exeter River and Quay side. It was a fantastic day with lots of smiles and laughter and a great turn out for the event.

Last year, John managed to raise £210 and, this year, we are all pleased to announce that, with the help of Debra & Sarah, the total surpassed that, with £500 raised so far.

Thanks to all who have sponsored us this year.

All Creatures Great & Small

All Creatures Great & Small

Residents, relatives & Staff were all delighted to welcome back the small animals from New Heights Falconry. Rich Dawkins brought along two rabbits, two guinea pigs and a chinchilla. Everyone was able to hold and pet the animals, which Admin Assistant, Emma Bibby (picture), was very happy about. We hope to see Richard and his wonderful assortment of furry friends very soon.

Going, Going... Scone!

Going, Going... Scone!

Recently, there has been a wonderful smell emanating from our Memory Lane kitchen as our much loved cheese scones were baking away. We added chives to the mixture which gave the scones that little extra kick in flavour. Everyone enjoyed preparing the mixture and even more so when we tasted the finished product. Our baking groups run regularly each week.

Our recipe was:

• 100g butter

• 400g self-raising flour

• 1 cup of chives

• 1 bowl of cheese

• 50-100ml milk

• Pinch of salt & pepper

Balloon Buddies

Balloon Buddies

Friday afternoon saw our Memory Lane community buzzing with laughter and energy during our balloon buddies activity. Residents, relatives and staff each have fly swatters that they use to hit the balloons and pass them to each other. This activity is a great way to promote physical activity and is a lot of fun. This activity has been so successful that it is to become a weekly fixture on our Memory Lane community.
